Chapter 345: Picture 181: Returning to Sell Fish_4

Everyone stood atop the second layer of the tower base and could still see through the glass the actual remains of Leifeng Tower below, marked by age and exuding an ancient aura. The perimeter of the base was adorned with portraits of the sixteen arhats, each dignified and venerable.

The group continued upwards, stepping onto the first level of the tower body, where they encountered the "Leifeng Tower" plaque, the three characters mighty and forceful.

Ascending further, the group then came across a hidden layer, sandwiched between the first and second levels, which particularly intrigued Yue’er.

On this layer, artists had used Dongyang wood carvings to depict the love story "Legend of the White Snake" between Bai Niangzi and Xu Xian. They also utilized a combination of round carving, semi-round carving, high relief, deep relief, and low relief techniques to create layered carvings, vividly portraying the storyline of the Legend of the White Snake. Despite being very familiar with this love story, everyone still found the carvings immensely captivating.

The group then ascended several more levels; the second level featured the "Wu and Yue Tower Building Map", the third had a display of engraved poems, the fourth held a directional map of West Lake’s ten sights, and the fifth was topped with a golden dome...

Each level was suffused with a breath of culture and art, treating everyone to a visual feast.

After exploring Leifeng Tower, the group continued their tour around the lake, enjoying Su Di in spring dawn, Lotus Pond under Evening Wind, Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake, Melting Snow on the Broken Bridge, Orioles Singing in the Willows, Huagang Viewing Fish, Leifeng Hill at Sunset, Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds, Evening Bell at Nanping Hill, Three Pools Mirroring the Moon... They had seen just about every one of West Lake’s ten sights.

However, some sceneries could only be seen under specific conditions. For instance, Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake only appeared on autumn nights, while Sunset Over Leifeng Hill required waiting until evening, as well as the Evening Bell at Nanping Hill and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon which are also best at night.

There was also Melting Snow on the Broken Bridge, but since it wasn’t winter, only the bridge was there without the melting snow. Even though many unique sceneries were missing, the group still found themselves deeply satisfied by today’s views, having encountered a dizzying array of landscapes and historical sites.

After touring these sights of West Lake, it was just past noon, and the group found themselves outside an inn on the lakefront.

On a signboard outside the inn, three bold characters ’Lakefront Inn’ were inscribed. This was one of the most historic and famous restaurants along West Lake, built by the lake, spanning three floors, offering a splendid view of the entire West Lake, enabling sightseeing and gourmet dining alike.

Having walked a long circuit, the group was both hungry and tired and promptly entered the Lakefront Inn, where they secured a small private room. Today, their group consisted of five people, Lin Yang and his two companions accompanied by Wang Feng and his assistant, Xiao Zhang.

Once inside the private room, they discovered it indeed offered the best scenic view from the west side of West Lake. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides surrounded by water showcased distant green hills, creating a picturesque beauty.

Of course, where there are beautiful views, exquisite food is also indispensable.

The local cuisine in Hang City has its unique style known as Hangzhou cuisine. The dishes here are special; although located in Jiangnan, they bear some Northern influences, and many staple foods are based on flour.

The reason for this, according to folklore, was due to the southward migration of the Northern Song dynasty, when many royal relatives and dignitaries moved from the Central Plains to Hang City, naturally bringing along some Central Plains delicacies.

These delicacies, blended with the local food, have evolved over a thousand years to form the unique Hangzhou cuisine of today.

Of course, as Hang City sits in the Jiangnan water towns with a mild climate, locals prefer a light diet and are very fond of eating fish and shrimp. This also means Hangzhou cuisine focuses more on the natural flavors, cooking with less oil and seasoning, emphasizing texture.
