Chapter 332: Chapter 179: Big Ghost Head Knife

The two of them had been picking seafood along the rocky shore of the island, and neither knew exactly how long they’d been doing so. But now, their small buckets were brimming full, and the sun had risen fully from its first glimpse of dawn.

Lin Yang had unlocked at least twenty new kinds of seafood this morning alone, a testament to the ocean’s rich variety of aquatic resources. In freshwater, it would have taken him at least ten days to half a month to identify this many.

By the time they were heading back, Yue’er was so tired she could barely straighten her back. She had been too excited while beachcombing to feel it, but now every step she took made her feel incredibly exhausted.

Due to his physical condition, Lin Yang fared slightly better, but even he felt his arms grow sore as he carried a bucket full of seafood on each side.

When they returned to the yacht, Li Xiaopeng had already woken up and prepared breakfast, which was quite straightforward: just a noodle dish.

There were a few of yesterday’s large shrimp left, perfect for making an authentic seafood noodle dish for breakfast.

After breakfast and a bit of rest, they all began to prepare for today’s fishing.

The spot they’d arrived at yesterday afternoon was marked mainly for Silver Pomfret and Stone Bream, among others.

Silver Pomfret, a fish Lin Yang was familiar with, also known as White Pomfret, had been mentioned a couple of days ago. It is universally recognized as one of the top three tastiest sea fish.

In the past, Silver Pomfret was plentiful and affordable, making it a popular choice due to its superior taste. Many people would buy it to try something new. But now, with dwindling numbers, prices have naturally skyrocketed, and good-quality White Pomfret has become unattainable for the average person.

Generally speaking, around two taels frozen could sell for about 70 yuan per 500 grams. Frozen ones weighing more than five taels could go for 90 yuan per 500 grams, and if they weigh over a jin, the frozen price jumps to 150 yuan per 500 grams. If caught fresh, the price doubles for any size fish within two hours.

Seeing this value, one could surmise that these fish are not easy to catch. Once prepared, Li Xiaopeng sailed the boat another kilometer or two deeper into the ocean as Lin Yang directed because Silver Pomfret isn’t found in the shallows.

In actuality, Pomfret can be found in both saltwater and freshwater worldwide, with Freshwater Whitebait being particularly famous.

Nowadays, many of the Pomfret sold in markets are actually Freshwater Whitebait, and in South America, the notorious man-eating Pomfret is another variety. Essentially, all Pomfret are known to have a great taste.

Except for the Golden Pomfret, that is.

Despite its name suggesting a natural superiority in price and flavor to Silver Pomfret, the Golden Pomfret is one of the more ordinary and affordable Pomfret species.

The proper name for Golden Pomfret is actually Oval Pompano, which belongs to the Carangidae family, not the Pomfret family. It was the unscrupulous seafood vendors who gave it this fancy name, so the taste of Golden Pomfret is quite average; in fact, it can even be less appetizing when farmed.

Lin Yang planned to focus on capturing authentic Silver Pomfret this morning. Technically, Silver Pomfret refers to a specific type of Pomfret, but in practice, many different Pomfret are called by that name.

For example, Round White Pomfret is also called Silver Pomfret by locals, as are Spiny Pomfret and the Short-Spined Batfish, which is a bycatch of Silver Pomfret.

Round Flying Fish, scientifically known as Round-eyed Flying Fish, are sometimes also called Silver Pomfret by fishermen. However, this species can grow very large and is unmatched by regular Silver Pomfret.

Even Black Pomfret, a relative of Golden Pomfret, is referred to as Silver Pomfret or Black Pomfret.

Lin Yang wasn’t much interested in other fish masquerading as Silver Pomfret. His main target for the day was the genuine Silver Pomfret.

Soon, aboard their boat, they reached the area where Lin Yang dove the day before.

To clarify, Silver Pomfret are typically found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and within China’s borders, the only place you’ll find them is where the East Sea meets the Southern Sea—right off the coast where Min Province and Guangdong Province converge. This is precisely where these fish are most abundant.

With a ’thunk’ sound, after finding a deeper spot to fish, Lin Yang dropped the boat anchor straight into the sea.

It was not yet eight in the morning, and since it took four to five hours to reach this spot from Peng City’s dock, they were likely to be the only boat fishing here this morning, which suited him just fine.

After securing the anchor, Lin Yang and his companions got ready to fish. He was live streaming the adventure with his drone again today, while his phone, which was also streaming, was securely placed on the yacht. With only a mild breeze, the device was quite steady.

As the live stream started, people gradually tuned in. They were using Nine-section Shrimp as bait, akin to earthworms in freshwater fishing—a sort of small universal bait suitable for most small to medium-sized fish.

Of course, for larger fish like the Big Grouper they had hooked yesterday, Nine-section Shrimp wouldn’t be effective.

It didn’t take long after the bait hit the water for Lin Yang to hook the first fish.

Clearly, temperature changes don’t affect sea fish all that much, as the vast ocean and high heat capacity of seawater make for minor variations in water temperature throughout the day. Thus, even now in the morning, when freshwater fish are unlikely to bite, sea fish are still happily feeding.
