Chapter 296: Chapter 170: The Most Expensive Grouper_3
As he cast his fishing line into the water, before it even reached the depths of seventy to eighty meters, a fish bit on the hook midway.
Seeing how the fishing line jerked in just a moment’s time, Lin Yang’s eyes lit up.
Judging by the bend in the fishing rod, this fish was no smaller than the twenty to thirty-pound Big Green Spot he had just caught.
After a fierce struggle, the big fish underwater finally exhausted its strength, and Lin Yang began to reel in the line with anticipation.
A couple of minutes later, when he saw the big fish emerge from the water, his brow involuntarily furrowed.
He recognized this fish, a Red Seabream, note the word red in the middle; it is not an octopus.
This type of fish, scientifically known as High Body Bream, is also called Red Bream, Du’s Bream, Red Bream, Red Soul... This fish is neither valuable nor tasty, and in Japan, many cheap sushi restaurants use this as sashimi.
Remember, any fish named Bream or Red Bream typically means the taste is quite average.
For a High Body Bream like this, a live one can sell for 50 yuan per pound, but a dead one only goes for 20 yuan per pound, and most importantly, it’s nearly impossible to keep this fish alive to the shore, even in a high-pressure tank.
We know that most fish can swim in the water because they breathe with their gills. These fish continually open and close their mouths and gill covers in alternation, allowing water drawn in through the mouth to flow over the gills. As the water passes over the gills, dissolved oxygen in the water is absorbed by the tiny blood vessels on the gills, while carbon dioxide is expelled back into the water, thus completing the gas exchange.
This type of breathing is called ’buccal pumping,’ and most Hard Bone Fish breathe this way.
However, the gill muscles of the Red Seabream cannot open and close, so it must keep its mouth open and constantly keep swimming forward to let plenty of fresh water flow through the gills to obtain enough oxygen to breathe.
This type of breathing, where the mouth is kept open, allowing water to stream directly over the gills for oxygen, is called ’ram ventilation,’ and many Soft Bone Fish like certain sharks breathe this way.
If they stop swimming, they can’t take in enough oxygen and suffer from hypoxia and suffocate, which is essentially ’drowned.’ Hence, it’s impossible to keep this fish alive in a small aeration tank.
Since it can’t be kept alive, Lin Yang naturally wouldn’t put it into the aeration tank, but he couldn’t just leave it on the ground either; the fish still needed to be dealt with.
First, he needed to make a cut behind the fish’s gill cover, between the gill filaments and the gill cover on the white membrane, to bleed it. Without bleeding, the flesh would be inedible. The second step in processing it would be best to use an insulation box to pack it, then cover it with some ice, essentially to preserve it.
A Red Seabream can grow up to one and a half meters, weighing around one hundred pounds; the one Lin Yang had caught estimated to be around forty pounds.
"Damn, Red Bream, I’ll take a look!"
While Lin Yang was dealing with this fish, Master Chai came out from the yacht. Upon seeing the fish, he instantly cursed under his breath, then quickly ran to the cockpit.
When he switched on the sonar, he couldn’t help but silently curse again.
"Boss, there’s a school of Red Bream below, and it looks like there’s quite a number of them. Do we want to change spots?"
Listening to Master Chai’s voice in the cabin, Lin Yang also stood up and glanced down at the water, and sure enough, he could vaguely see a school of fish swimming about.
Red Seabream move in schools and are extremely voracious when feeding, which means that if the school doesn’t disperse, the bait Lin Yang throws down won’t reach the bottom before the Red Seabream snatch it away.
Lin Yang checked the time; it was about half past one. If they were to move to another spot, the next targeted area might not be reached until three or four o’clock. Furthermore, they couldn’t return too late, so if they changed locations, today’s sea fishing would essentially be over.
Up to now, he had only earned back the cost of going out to sea, and naturally, he wasn’t content just to return like this.
"Let’s stay here and fish, don’t move,"
Lin Yang said and then baited his hook and cast his line, resuming fishing. It didn’t matter whether it was a Grouper or a Red Bream; as long as it could be sold for money, it was fine.
Less than a minute after his cast, as the bait had just reached a depth of ten to twenty meters, he immediately got a bite.
Seeing this, Lin Yang knew for sure that it was another Red Seabream on the line.
"As expected, trash!"
Minutes later, when he hauled the fish out of the water, he saw that this time the thief was a Red Bream weighing around seven to eight jin. There were far too many of these in the sea, and indeed, they were not worth much money.
Upon hearing Lin Yang’s decision to fish here without changing spots, Master Chai and his nephew packed up their rods and came over; he and his nephew helped with bleeding and gutting the fish.
Now that there was a school of Red Bream below, it was certain to be a continuous catch.
Sure enough, Lin Yang entered a streak of catches, and so did Li Xiaopeng on the other side; if only Yue’er weren’t a girl and if the Red Bream weren’t so big, she too would have liked to try her hand at fishing.
Although the Red Bream is a trash fish with taste that isn’t very good, catching this fish is almost like fishing for Blackhead.
Black fish, which are also not tasty except for their roe and have small bones, are rare in sea fish, but Black fish do have them, making their flesh not very palatable. Live Black fish sell for 10 yuan per jin on the shore, extremely cheap.
But anglers love to catch them because Black fish are very thrilling to reel in; they are strong and many sea anglers refer to catching Blackhead as "flying a plane" because the fish dart around wildly in the water once hooked, making the fishing experience quite exhilarating.
The Red Bream at this moment was similar. This fish also had a lot of strength. Although it tasted bad, the sensation of reeling it in was indeed fantastic!
Lin Yang stood at the side of the boat, pulling up fish after fish from the sea. This time, he didn’t even need to use a gaff; for the small Red Bream, he could simply flick them up. With his line protection buff and the quality of this deep-sea rod, it was no problem at all.
At this point, Master Chai and his nephew weren’t concerned about whether Lin Yang’s method of pulling might damage the rod or not; they were rapidly processing these Red Breams, bleeding each one...
After all, aside from Lin Yang landing fish, Li Xiaopeng was continuously bringing them in too. These fish were so easy to catch; basically, anything would do, as long as they saw food in the water ahead, they would charge forward and bite, making them too easy to hook.
Time ticked away, and the number of Red Bream that Lin Yang and his group were catching kept increasing. Because they had to bleed the fish, a large area of the yacht’s deck had turned red, creating quite a bloody scene.
