Chapter 188: Chapter 141: Fishing in Xiangjiang_2
Just then, Yue’er’s voice rang out, "Oh, Brother Yang, I think I’ve got a fish too!" She was seen holding her 3.6-meter short fishing rod, excitedly lifting it up.
Soon, a Tilapia weighing close to a jin was pulled up out of the water by her.
Seeing the fish flapping wildly on the water’s surface, Lin Yang smoothly grabbed the landing net from nearby and helped her net the fish.
"Not bad, Yue’er, you caught a big one on your first try, and now out of all the fish, yours is the biggest."
"Haha, really? The feeling of catching that fish was just too great." Yue’er laughed and seemed very happy.
Lin Yang helped her unhook the fish and place it into the keepnet.
A Tilapia over a jin can be tricky to handle when it spreads its fins – they can easily prick your hand if you’re not careful.
Seeing Lin Yang and Yue’er successively catching fish, Li Xiaopeng was utterly sour. Even a rookie female angler was catching fish - where was the justice in that?
Glancing at his own motionless float, he started to feel a sense of helplessness and, a bit petulantly, he picked up the can of bait next to him. He had planned to use half a basin of bait gradually for topping up, but in a huff, he dumped it all into the feeding area in one go.
"Eat, eat, eat; come on and eat. Damn it, if I can’t catch you, I’ll just bloat you."
Watching Li Xiaopeng’s frustrated antics, Lin Yang shook his head amusedly; it seemed like his friend had completely lost his cool.
Fishing continued.
Lin Yang kept catching a lot of fish on his side, and it wasn’t just Tilapia and Crucian Carp - before long, he unlocked a new species of fish.
Flat, with a tiny head but a broad body, it looked quite endearing.
Ling fish, also known as Tuling and Mai Ling.
Ling fish are also quite common in the south. They do exist in the north, but they are seldom encountered there.
On his first day in Xiang Province, he unlocked this fish he had never caught before, a rather nice acquisition.
Though the reward was nothing extraordinary, the feeling was very distinct.
Meanwhile, Li Xiaopeng continued to wait for a big catch.
Only when Yue’er had already caught three fish and he was almost in despair, did he finally see an attractive bite.
A black bite.
He quickly lifted the rod and instantly felt a tremendous force transmitted from the line, exciting Li Xiaopeng, "Hahaha, I’ve got a big one! If I fish, I fish for size."
However, his jubilation didn’t last half a second before his expression changed.
"Huh? Something’s wrong. Why can’t I reel it in? Is this... snagged with the Earth?"
Lin Yang couldn’t help but laugh at his friend’s remark, "Catching Earth would indeed be quite a big catch."
Li Xiaopeng felt utterly downcast, almost ready to throw his rod to the ground, his morale was completely shattered.
But then, he felt something was off because although the rod wouldn’t budge, he could feel vibrations traveling up the rod.
"Wait, that’s not right. There seems to be a fish down there, but it’s definitely snagged. What do I do now?" Li Xiaopeng looked at Lin Yang with a pleading gaze.
Seeing his state, Lin Yang quickly set down his own rod, came over, and took Li Xiaopeng’s fishing rod.
Once he had the rod in hand, he gauged by the subtle vibrations that there was indeed a fish on the hook, probably wrapped around something like a stump on the riverbed.
Lin Yang didn’t rush. He slightly loosened his grip, lowered the rod, giving the fish below some room to move.
The fish felt the tension lessen and immediately made a run for deeper water.
At that moment, Lin Yang applied force again, swiftly holding the rod upright.
The rod bent into a great arc the instant it was raised. It seemed that the fish down there was not small. Now, the sizable catch was being pushed up.
"There you go, reel it in yourself," said Lin Yang as he handed the rod back to Li Xiaopeng.
Li Xiaopeng took over the rod and realized that it was no longer snagged, and the fish was still on the hook.
"Wow, big bro, you’re amazing. That actually worked." He grew even more admiring of Lin Yang.
Before long, he had successfully landed his first fish, finally hauling it ashore.
Lin Yang saw it was a six to seven-jin Spotted Gar.
"Awesome, this is the largest Spotted Gar I’ve caught so far." Li Xiaopeng was very excited.
"Not bad, we’ve got our lunch for today," Lin Yang said, giving him a thumbs up.
This size of Spotted Gar is tender, tasty, and excellent for steaming.
As for the Tilapia and Crucian Carp Lin Yang had caught, the taste of Tilapia and Crucian Carp was passable, but the Redeye was quite mediocre, one of the less delicious freshwater fish, incomparable to the Spotted Gar.
With Li Xiaopeng having scored as well, the opening trip of game fishing at Liuyang River was perfect.
The trio continued fishing.
Lin Yang’s side went without saying – he was catching fish consistently.
And there, Lin Yang reminded Li Xiaopeng, "The Spotted Gar swims in schools. Now that one has come, surely more will follow. I suggest you try targeting the Spotted Gar."
"How do I target Spotted Gar specifically?"
Lin Yang then explained in detail, "For Spotted Gar, corn will do. Remember the tender corn you bought when you first arrived? Use it all, cut it into kernels.
Then, every few minutes, throw a handful of corn into the feeding area to keep it from dissipating. Especially, make sure that your hook isn’t always soaked in water. You need to regularly lift and recast your rod, and each time you cast, throw in a handful of corn, which creates competition among the fish and lowers their guard...."
