Chapter 136: Chapter 124: Fishing in the Cave_3
After a while, a large fish about 20 centimeters long with a white and translucent body was flipped onto the water’s surface.
Once the fish was pulled ashore, Yue’er approached and exclaimed, "Wow, Brother Yang, the fish you caught is so big, and it’s beautiful too. Do you know what this is?"
Lin Yang removed the fish from the hook and said with a smile, "This fish is known as the Golden Line Barb, a unique species native to our country. Their numbers are very scarce now, so we’ll release it later."
The Golden Line Barb has a long body, laterally compressed, with a distinctive hump forming an arc on the back behind its head, and some are almost entirely transparent.
They usually live in the open waters of quiet lakes, often dispersed around the lake outlets or in deeper waters, congregating near the shoreline or lake outlets in shallow waters during the breeding season, or in spring-fed caverns to lay and hatch their eggs.
There are two color morphs of the Golden Line Barb: those that live year-round in still water lakes, which exhibit a yellowish-brown appearance, and those that live in the darkness of caves, which appear white and translucent - a common trait for most cave-dwelling fish.
Typically, Golden Line Barbs are only ten to fifteen centimeters in length, so this one over twenty centimeters is considered a giant among its kind.
After putting the fish into a fish protector, Lin Yang checked the guidebook rewards again. The rewards were still about the same as before, nothing special, just an additional two hundred yuan, some more experience, and points.
He continued to cast his line for more fishing.
In the time that followed, Lin Yang and Yue’er both successively caught quite a few fish.
However, these fish all shared similar features such as being relatively small in size, essentially all under twenty centimeters, and having body colors that were mostly white and translucent or flesh-pink. The final point was their underdeveloped eyes, or in some cases, none at all.
This could be considered a unique species resulting from the unique geography of the area, and outside of similar cave or cavernous areas, it would be impossible to catch them elsewhere.
This time, Lin Yang unlocked many rewards, and although they weren’t much, he felt very pleased.
After all, it wasn’t often that one would encounter such unique fishing environments.
Having fished for a while, Lin Yang and Yue’er decided it was time to leave; they had had their fill of fun, and fishing too many would have meant that they couldn’t take them all with them.
These small fish, accustomed to living in caverns, would certainly not survive if brought out of their environment, and considering their rarity, they were definitely to be released back.
The two poured all the fish from the protector back into the stream of the cavern and then, with Lin Yang carrying their gear and holding the fishing rod, they continued on with Yue’er.
Star Moon Cave runs through, so just walking straight ahead would bring them to another mountain peak.
"Wow, we’re out, it’s so beautiful!"
"Phew!"
After walking through Star Moon Cave for about four or five minutes, Lin Yang and Yue’er finally came out.
Before them lay a scene of overlapping peaks and swirling mists, with two cable cars moving one above the other halfway up the distant mountainside, connecting Mingyue Lake at mid-mountain to the foot of the mountain.
After a brief discussion, they decided to take the cable car down the mountain later.
Although Lin Yang could endure the journey, Yue’er was beginning to struggle; after all, traversing the entire Mingyue Mountain could take at least four or five hours. This was not only a challenge for a young girl but also a hefty one for a physically fit man who exercised regularly.
They sat down on a large rock at the cave entrance to take a break and rehydrate before continuing their journey.
After walking for almost an hour, they finally arrived at the mid-mountain area of another peak.
The first thing they saw was a sizeable lake, which was two to three times bigger than the wild lake where they had been fishing for giant catfish the day before.
And it must be said, the amenities provided here now were really excellent.
Many years ago, Lin Yang had heard that aside from wild ducks, there wasn’t much else here.
But now, on seeing it for himself, he found that although much of it had been preserved in its primitive state, there were facilities like kiosks and public restrooms.
After walking for another few minutes, the two reached the lakeshore of Mingyue Lake, and it was clear that fishing was allowed here.
However, few people usually came here to fish.
Once Lin Yang and Yue’er found a spot to sit, he prepared to cast a few lines to see if there were any fish before they left, as fishing here felt pretty good.
This time he was using a 4.5-meter pole, with a 0.8+0.4 line setup and a hook size 0.5 without barbs.
This place was different than other park lakes; there were no tourists feeding the fish here, so there were hardly any large groups of fish to be seen, except near the fences along the shore where small schools swam, all under two liang (approximately 100 grams).
Furthermore, Lin Yang had a line protection buff; although the line and hook he was using this time were small, they could still hook fish weighing up to two or three jin (approximately 1 to 1.5 kilograms), no problem.
Once he had adjusted the float and the line setup, he casually put together some bait. This time he used earthworms, eliminating the need to laboriously bait the area, and earthworms were readily available all around.
Having strung the earthworm onto the hook, he threw the line into the water, and then it was a matter of waiting for a bite.
Yue’er didn’t choose to fish this time; instead, she roamed around with her phone, capturing photos of the splendid scenery to take back home.
Not even a few minutes after throwing his baited hook into the water, Lin Yang noticed movement in his float. With a gentle flick of his wrist,
he pulled a fish to the shore about the length of his finger.
Upon seeing the fish, Lin Yang first thought it was a whitebait, but as he drew it closer, he realized it wasn’t, as this fish had a distinctly different appearance.
