The Throne Is Mine
Chapter 52

Chapter 52: Chapter 52

Late in the night when the castle was partially silent, Cyrus silently made his way down to the castle dungeon to have a word with the northerners the king had captured. It was odd they had been captured in the first place and Cyrus found it strange they were remaining quiet when they could easily break free. They were all demons after all. King Richard had no idea what he welcomed into his castle.

Cyrus walked in the shadows, his white hair on display and his red eyes vibrant in the darkness. He revealed his true appearance as it made him stronger. He was like a leaf in the wind floating by the Blackwell guards in the dungeon.

Cyrus sniffed the air when he stumbled across two passageways going left and right. He followed the right side where he was sure to find the northerners. The lack of Blackwell guards at this point meant they were too afraid to be anywhere near the captured men.

’They’re here,’ he thought. The loud sounds of chains shackling were heard nearby.

"Show yourself northerner. There is no need to remain in the shadows when we can all smell you," a deep voice spoke in the silent room. "I cannot remember your smell from the ones who came with the king. If you are able to walk here freely, you must be a traitor."

"I am not a traitor. In the eyes of the Blackwell people, I am a slave but I serve as a guard to their princess. It is interesting how all of you are sitting quietly in this dungeon without trying to escape. It is as if you are all waiting for something. I’ve run into Killian Bune. He will soon attack and you are all waiting for that moment to strike," said Cyrus.

"I do not know what you speak of. You should return to your new master traitor."

"I do not care if the king is on his way here to kill the Blackwell king. That man can die for all I care but I would like it if no harm will come to the princess. She is innocent in this matter and truly hopes to create peace between the two kingdoms. Seeing that you have spoken up, you must be the leader of this group. Relay what I said to your king," Cyrus stepped into view to see who he was talking to.

He found a man who looked to be in his thirties sitting by the cell door but Cyrus knew looks were deceiving when it came to demons. The man was certainly much older.

"Your king?" The leader chuckled. "You really are a traitor."

"I have not betrayed my homeland. I have only shown loyalty to the princess who rescued me and after running into Killian, he said it himself that he is not my king. I am not here to sell secrets of the north to the Blackwells and vice versa. I only remain here to search for a woman taken when the Blackwells invaded our land."

"And where will you go after you have found her? Will you remain a guard to the princess? Do you think she will continue to like you after the king has killed her father? Will you try pledging your loyalty to Killian Bune or maybe, you planned to go back down to the underworld? You seem to be lost," the northerner shook his head. "You are stuck between two kingdoms. I suggest you run before it is too late."

"It would not be good for Killian to place one of his family members on the Blackwell throne to try creating peace. You are well aware any relative he chooses will try using the throne to go against Killian and more innocent people will-"

"Our king is only here for king Richard’s head. Innocent men could have been saved if King Richard accepted the one-on-one Killian offered. Our king does not plan to place a Bune on the Blackwell throne. Instead, he will have a conversation with the next heir for peace. You can rest assured your pretty princess will not be hurt. Killian Bune is many things but he does not hurt women or children. Go now, you’re interrupting our sleep."

Cyrus wanted to find out what day Killian would strike so that he could take Amelia and Gina far away from the castle but he was certain they would not trust him with the truth. In their eyes, he could be a spy for King Richard.

At least from this visit, he knew Killian Bune was close to the castle. It was obvious by how alert the captured northerners were.

"Why on earth isn’t there a single Blackwell guard watching your cell? Is it because of how easily you lost the battle?" Cyrus found King Richard to be a fool to leave the northerners unsupervised much less alive. There should be at least thirty men watching the prisoners.

"King Richards’s ego will be his downfall. Do not run away, traitor. There is much you have to see. Unless you are bringing us food, do not visit us. Tell the king it would be nice if he could add meat to our food-"

"I do not work for king Richard. I am only loyal to his daughter the princess," Cyrus said. Nothing in this world could persuade him to work for Richard. If not for Amelia saving him and taking him in as one of her people, he would have killed Richard long ago for starting this war. He always pushed the thought away since Richard was Amelia’s father. "You should be aware that the Blackwells have a high priest in the castle."

Cyrus decided to leave after giving them that piece of information. He knew the high priest knew something about what they are. He could tell by the high priest’s gaze that he knew something. The question was, did the high priest share what he assumed about the north with the Blackwell king? Was that why Richard was so carefree about Killian? Did the temple and the king have some sort of plan?

Cyrus snuck his way back out of the dungeon and headed back to Amelia’s room before going to his room. He wanted to check if she was sound asleep or if the rum was pointless. Amelia needed to be well rested to be prepared for what will come in the next day or so.

As he was about to knock on her door before entering, someone spoke to him.

"If you enter her room so late in the night rumors will spread about what the two of you do alone. Do you think the room of a princess is somewhere you can enter as you please you northerner dog!" Ricardo Cooke snapped.

"There is nothing going on between me and the princess that is more than a guard making sure she is safe. If rumors were to spread, they would be coming from your mouth. Princess Amelia has given me permission to guard her door throughout the night and even step in if-"

"Silence!" Ricardo yelled, clenching his fits to refrain from punching Cyrus. He warned the king many times not to let a northerner roam free in their castle. They should have stopped the princess from taking Cyrus as her guard when there were capable men around. Who knows what indecent relationship the princess indulges herself in with this northerner? "You must think you are so special to be standing here."

"I don’t," Cyrus replied in a dull tone. He did not want to be in the Blackwell kingdom. He was only here in the beginning with one purpose and now he remained in the castle because of Amelia. How many times must he say this?

"Do not talk back to me you damn dog. I will see to it your body hangs as a warning to any other northerner thinking they can enter our castle. It will be a nice parting gift to the princess. A nice little gift to break her further," Ricardo grinned. "I hope she will be able to withstand her husband at night. I heard he has a niche to torture the women he beds. Perhaps I should keep you alive to hear her screams."

Cyrus’s fingers twitched as he was tempted to kill the rotten man standing before him. He was merely a court minister and yet, he was talking so carelessly about his own princess. Why stop at the king? All the men trying to hurt Amelia should die. What on earth had she done to them to be treated this way?

Before Cyrus could reach his breaking point, the bedroom door opened revealing Amelia in her night dress. "What is taking you so long, Cyrus? The spider will get away if you wait any longer. Mister Crook, why are you at my door this late in the night? I find it to be creepy that you might have been trying to step into my room while I was asleep. Thank goodness I have Cyrus around."

"That is far from the truth princess-"

"Mister Crook, I heard every word you said clearly, and going forward I will never forget them. I hope that wonderful daughter you cherish does not share the same fate you are planning for me."
