The Thorne of Destiny
Chapter 106: A Weighty Request

Chapter 106: A Weighty Request

Just as Adrian was about to take the storage ring out of the skeleton’s hands, the Hundred-faced thief suddenly spoke again. This time in a more serious tone.

"While you are certainly worthy of my legacy, know that it won’t be all fun and games." The Hundred-faced thief said.

Adrian’s hand paused in the air as he asked in a confused tone. "What do you mean, senior?"

"Since you don’t know about me, let me tell you a bit about my story. Back in my day, I was a very feared individual. It wasn’t because of my power, though I was very powerful." The Hundred-faced thief said, praising himself a bit.

Adrian didn’t interrupt him and continued listening to his story.

"I was feared because I was a thief. A very good one at that. Families, clans, sects, none of them could stop me. I told you previously, but I was even able to escape from the Lone Sword Sect.

Do you know how hard it was to escape from those sword-wielding maniacs?"

He said in a smug tone.

"Anyways, I always escaped, and they never found me."

"Then how did you die?" Adrian asked in confusion. From the story, the man, or rather the skeleton in front of him, seemed very skilled and powerful. Such a person wouldn’t easily fall.

The mood in the room shifted as soon as Adrian asked the question. The atmosphere became noticeably colder, making Adrian feel a chill down his spine. Thankfully, the atmosphere didn’t change much after that, as the Hundred-faced thief began recounting his story.

"It was all because of one man. Felix Graye." Though Adrian could not see any expressions on the face of the skeleton, the anger in his voice could be clearly heard.

However, before he could ask further, the Hundred-faced thief began to explain.

" Felix was a talented young man. He was the young master of the Graye family. And was going to succeed his father as the patriarch of his family. He was also my friend."

He said that last part in a quiet and somber tone that differed greatly from his usual jovial attitude.

Adrian’s brows furrowed slightly. "Your... friend?"

The Hundred-faced Thief chuckled bitterly. "Yes. Back then, we were close. We trained together, drank together, even risked our lives for each other more times than I can count."

"All my life, there were a handful of people I was close with. And among them, Felix was the only one I considered a true friend."

"He was the last person I would think would betray me. I guess I was a fool in believing he would truly consider a thief his friend."

"What... happened?" Adrian asked.

" It happened right after I escaped from the Lone Sword sect. Even though I escaped, I was still in pretty bad shape. I was going to go into hiding to recover from my injuries for a few years.

However, I was suddenly contacted by Felix. He told me he had some incredible treasure he wanted to show me. Since he was my friend, I believed him without much thought and made my way to the Graye family."

"I didn’t know that I was actually walking into an ambush. I was besieged by hundreds of cultivators trying to kill me.

Even the Elders from the Lone Sword sect were there. However, even their combined might wasn’t able to kill me. I’m very strong, you see." The Hundred-faced Thief chuckled slightly.

" I was able to escape, and I continued fleeing till I reached this mystic realm. With my power, I was able to take it over and turn it into a sanctuary."

"However, my injuries were too severe. I discovered that my life was slowly fading, so I used the rest of my power to create the maze as a trial in order to find someone worthy of my legacy."

"But wait, senior, isn’t that too vague? What if a powerful cultivator found the entrance? They could have easily entered and taken all your treasure." Adrian questioned in a confused tone.

"Fufufu... young man, do you think I haven’t thought about that? Only those with the strength of the Golden Core realm or below would be able to enter this mystic realm. Plus, without the map, it is basically impossible to enter." The skeleton said.

Understanding dawned on Adrian’s face as he finally realized how well the Hundred-faced Thief had truly planned.

"Anyway, if you take my legacy, you have to do one thing for me." The skeleton said.

"What do you want me to do, senior?" Adrian asked, even though he already had a feeling about what it was.

"You have to swear to me that you’ll kill that bastard Felix Grayes." The Hundred-faced Thief said in a tone that was both cold and heavy.

The words hung in the air like a blade unsheathed.

Adrian stared at the skeleton, his fingers still hovering over the storage ring. The request wasn’t unexpected, but the weight of it pressed against his chest like a stone.

"You want me to... kill your friend?"

The skeleton’s jaw creaked in what might have been a grim smile. "Former friend. Traitor. Murderer. Call him what you will."

Adrian hesitated. "Senior, with all due respect, how do I even find him? If this happened long ago, he could be—"

"Alive," the Hundred-faced thief interrupted. "Oh, very much alive. Felix wouldn’t die so easily.

And as for your other question, the Grayes family resided in the Western region of the continent. It’s only been a little over a hundred years, so things shouldn’t have changed that much."

’A hundred years ago, huh.’ Adrian thought to himself. A hundred years was the lifespan of an ordinary mortal with no cultivation.

For the current Adrian, a hundred years was still a significant portion of his lifespan. Seeing the skeleton in front of him talk about it so casually made him wonder just how truly strong he was.

"Senior, how strong were you when you were alive. What was your cultivation realm? " Adrian asked curiously.

"I was very powerful, you see. I was at the Transcendent realm, only one step away from becoming an Immortal." The Hundred-faced thief said in a proud tone.

"Then that means this Felix Grayes was in a similar realm as you. You want me to kill a Transcendent realm cultivator?" Adrian asked in disbelief.

"Sigh, like I said, it’s been over a hundred years. That bastard has probably grown stronger, perhaps in a new realm entirely." The Hundred-faced thief said with a sigh.

"That’s... Forgive me, Senior, but-" Before Adrian could refuse, the Hundred-faced thief interrupted him once again.

"I know what you’re thinking. I’m not asking you to set off right away to kill him. With your current strength, you’d probably not even survive the journey.

All I’m asking is one day... if one day, if your path happens to cross with him, end his pathetic life." The Hundred-faced thief said in a sombre tone.

Adrian fell silent. The weight of that request settled on his shoulders like a cloak of stone. Vengeance was not something he took lightly. He knew how it consumed people until there was nothing left but obsession.

After all, he also had his target of vengeance, one of a far greater scale than that of the Hundred-faced thief.

But then he remembered the pain in the thief’s voice. The betrayal. The ambush. The sacrifice of a man who had given everything to escape his fate.

Adrian slowly lowered his hand and looked into the hollow sockets of the skeleton’s skull."Senior, I won’t make a blind promise. I’m not someone who swears oaths without thought. But I give you my word, if Felix Graye stands in the way of what I must do... I will face him. And if he deserves death, then I will deliver it."

There was a long pause. Then, a low laugh echoed through the chamber.

"Heh... smart boy. You’re cautious, but you understand. That’s good. That’s what it takes to survive. To win."

"Take it. Take the ring. However, make sure not to tarnish my legacy.

Hahaha... the name of the Hundred-faced thief will resound once more on the Floating Cloud continent."

"By the way, senior, why were you known as the Hundred-Faced thief?" Adrian asked, finally voicing the question that had been gnawing on his mind.

"Hahaha. I thought you’d never ask. The reason I was known as the Hundred-faced thief was very simple... I had a hundred faces."

"...Huh?" Adrian was dumbfounded. That wasn’t the answer he was expecting. He began to wonder whether he was probably just very good at disguising himself so that people didn’t recognise him.

Perhaps it was some sort of cultivation technique that could change his appearance. If that were the case, it would be very useful for him, who was trying to hide his identity.

"No one knew my true identity. Even Felix, my dear ’friend’, didn’t know my true appearance." It was also part of the reason I was able to escape from the trap he set for me."

Adrian asked how he did it, thinking he was going to receive a disguise technique or cultivation manual, but he didn’t expect the response given to him.

"Kid, do you think the hat on my head is for decoration?" The hundred-faced thief asked in a teasing tone.
