Chapter 251: A dance

Chapter 251: A dance

Stella raked her gaze around the room, completely oblivious to her original intentions. She had hoped to occupy herself with sightseeing, and Gerald had been kind enough to suggest just that. But she could not deceive herself any longer. Even if her mind is set on making Matteo regret his decision, she was not cut out for being left alone.

The table that she sat on was filled with Asians and Indians, completely foreign to her. So, there was no way she could successfully start and hold a conversation with them. But she could tell from their deliberately lingering stares that they were interested in her. She shuddered slightly and served herself a hearty portion of wine, trying hard to avoid eye contact while at it.

Ten minutes had gone by since she stepped into the room, and she had not set her eyes on Sebastian. The event had already begun and Gerald was on the stage, giving a speech of thanks for the attendance. Apparently, it was an event made to launch a hotel – his hotel, and the reception was being held in the grand Hall space which was located in the hotel.

She served herself another reasonable portion of wine and downed it in one go.

"You’ll get wasted if you take wine like that. Forget about the alcohol content." She averted her gaze to the person that had obviously spoken to her. He was a burly man about six feet two, dark skinned, athletically built, and sort of confident. The likeness about him could fill a room easily, and his friendly appearance gave him an air of relatability.

"Oh, ha, pardon me. I’m just anxious." Stella replied as she replaced the glass and placed her hands on her thighs.

"Care to dance?" He asked in a sultry voice that could’ve caused her insides to tumble – if it did not belong to someone else.

"Oh goodness, no, I am no expert when it comes to things of such." She exclaimed nervously, flailing her hands slightly and then replacing them once again.

"It does not matter when one already commands the room with just her appearance – you are the most stunning woman in this entire room."

Now that’s a compliment right there. She thought to herself, feeling her legs become jello from the warm and soothing voice that caressed her ego.

"So, will you give me this dance?" he asked once again, holding out his hand toward her with a charming smile that revealed his clear dentition. He was a very decent man, obviously intelligent, maybe beyond comprehension, and very charming as well. She found herself wishing Matteo could be more like him. But this was a night of fun, and she had made up her mind not to let some overgrown teenager ruin it for her.

"Of course." She replied cheerily, slipping her outstretched hand in his and allowing him to lead her to the dance floor.

Matteo made his way to the champagne tower, where he was sure to have a clear view of the dance floor.

His rage was sure to mess this entire room up, especially when he was certainly going to be able to achieve it if he really wanted to. But he would not do anything to sabotage the beginning of a business venture because of his vexation toward a woman who happened to be dancing with one of the host.

She was simply too breathtaking to ignore. And on the contrary, he should be more than happy to oblige if the hosts of the party want to have a dance. It was a fleeting compliment that surely did not come easy.

Thank goodness it’s not Gerald.

He thought to himself with a sigh, taking one of the glasses at the top and downing it in one toss. His face contorted with displeasure as he replaced the glass. He raked his gaze about the table, clearly in search of something that was not there.

I need a drink, what’s all this?!

He rose his gaze to study the dance floor once again, she was still dancing in the arms of that man.

He sighed as he whispered to himself, "I will not ruin this party."

"May I take a drink?" a voice, clearly strained, seared through his thoughts, causing him to jerk his gaze around. A woman, most likely in her early forties approached him.

Stella was having the time of her life with the man that had offered to dance with her when her gaze darted to the spot where the drink castle was. There, she saw Matteo, standing awfully close to a woman in a satin royal blue sleeveless dress. Her body was moderately fair, and her hair was pinned up in a sleek ponytail that revealed her chiselled face. She was the ideal beauty pageant, with a moderately slim body – just the way he liked it. It almost looked as though she was rubbing off on him, and from how animated the woman was, they were probably having a conversation.

But what could be so funny in their conversation that would cause her to throw her arms over his shoulders, or toss herself on him?

Stella was clearly getting exasperated, and it had affected her mood significantly, causing her to want to forfeit the dance altogether.

"I see you looking over there," the man that currently held her in his arms spoke. Almost instantly, she jerked back her gaze go meet his.

"Oh, I’m really sorry. I was just checking to know how he is. He’s my boss, you know. He invited me here, so I need to behave myself. But, at the same time, I need to watch over him as well. So many responsibilities in one night that’s meant to be fun, is not so fun after all." She said it all in one breath, not taking a break to utter the next bit of words.

The man chuckled, the reverberations of his voice almost bubbling into laughter. A few seconds in, she began to feel the weight of self-consciousness weighing in once again. Why on earth was he laughing? What was so funny?

She paused in her steps, causing the man to stop as well.

"What’s the matter?" he asked cautiously, his voice taking on the note of a guardian who had walked in on his ward in tears.

"What do you mean?"
