The Sweetest Temptation
Chapter 228: Part of me

Chapter 228: Part of me

He light jogged towards the door to the backseat, waved off the chauffeur and stood aside for Stella to enter the car.

Stella noticed the subtle display of chivalry, but forced herself to remain clueless. She whispered a ’thank you sir’ and adjusted towards the other side of the window. Matteo slid inside and shut the door himself.

"Go," he ordered, and the convoy of two began to move. He had suggested taking extra protection, but his client spoke against it, claiming that it would be too conspicuous.

He knew what he meant, but he forced himself to believe that he was here for a property. However, there was a growing unrest in his entire being. He tilted his head backward slightly, to see if the G-wagon was moving. When he had satisfied his curiosity, he turned back to the road and settled into the seat.

Stella tried all she could to keep herself glued to the confines of her side of the seat. Periodically, the car would make cursed swerves that would threaten to throw her towards Matteo who even seemed oblivious to her presence in the vehicle.

Using her peripheral vision, she raked his gorgeousness, she wondered within her what would get him to notice her, what would make him see her instead of others. She heaved a sigh, about to start a conversation when he spoke.

"Suave, take the road that leads to project alpha." He spoke in a baritone that was more questioning than assertive. There was worry in his gaze while he stared at his phone screen. It was clear that something was amiss; her lascivious conversation would have to wait.

"What’s the matter sir?" She asked him in a soft tone that clearly expressed her interest in his current state. And for the first time since the trip started, he turned his gaze towards her, finally acknowledging her presence.

"He wants to discuss somewhere people can’t see us." His tone was grave with anticipation.

That could only mean one thing.

"Are you prepared, sir?" She whispered, more to his hearing.

"I am always prepared, my only worry right now, is you." He replied, his gaze stern as he beheld her.

Stella felt herself swooning at his declaration but she held herself together and gave him a reply that she was sure he’d want to hear from his ’ideal’ woman.

"I’ll be fine sir, just tell me what you will need my help with, and I’ll do it."

Despite her obvious fear, she chose to feign courage...what could be more enticing.

"You only need to remain in the car. Whatever happens, tell Suave to take you out of there." There was instant resistance in his gaze, but his countered hers, daring her to go against his word. She remained silent, waiting for the rest of his instructions.

"Am I clear, Stella?" He asked for confirmation, his gaze still locked with hers. It was clear to him that she was against the entire plan.

"There won’t be need for any of this, Matteo, please, let’s turn back. This doesn’t seem safe." She said, swerving her head sideways and shutting her eyes briefly, in what seemed like a futile attempt to convince him.

But in the peak of the moment, she had forgotten that she mentioned his name. It wasn’t until she was met with silence that she realized what she’d done. She opened her eyes, only to meet his, still looking at her but this time, there was an unusual fondness that she’d definitely didn’t imagined seeing.

Is that...?

"Do what I asked you to do Stella, I will be fine." He added as he pulled out of a compartment underneath where he sat, in it was a sleek black briefcase. When he opened it, she was greeted with a sight of two fully-loaded pistols. How did she know? He pulled out the cartridge of each to confirm – and to her horror and genuine excitement, he held one out towards her. Reluctantly, she took it from him.

"You’re part of me now."

The weight of the words echoed through Stella’s mind, a haunting reminder of the daunting task that had fallen upon her shoulders – one that was most likely going to lead to bloodshed. In her trembling hand, she clutched the cold handle of the pistol, testing its weight with cautiousness. Its metallic presence was both empowering and unnerving.

Her gaze shifted between the firearm and Matteo, who sat in disheartening silence, his eyes once again fixed on his phone screen, most likely contemplating his next move.

His normally sharp and calculating gaze seemed somewhat vacant. His usual composure had clearly been disrupted by the current predicament.

It was evident that this unexpected turn of events had caught him off guard, it wasn’t something out of the ordinary in the world he navigated. Her instincts told her that there was more to this situation than met the eye, but unmasking its secrets amidst the intensity of the moment seemed like an impossible task.

She began to think of some kind of peace she could offer to him, some kind of way to alleviate the weight of his worry.

But what could she, a mere pawn in the game, possibly provide to distract him from the imminent danger lurking just a few kilometers ahead?

"Mr. Quinn," Her voice came out in hushed sounds. He turned almost immediately, acknowledging her call.

"Yes," His voice was soft, albeit slightly strained.

"What can I do?" was all she could say. What else was there? She spoke the words, not knowing what she could do to ease him off. But there were other things she hoped for. Things she wasn’t meant to wish for, or even think of, but that she hoped would happen.

Matteo’s intense gaze bore into hers, creating an unspoken bond that belied their current circumstance. He suddenly felt the unbearable urge to pull her towards him and rid her off any thoughts of impending doom.

There was fear in her eyes, and something else that beckoned him closer, something else that pushed him to indulge himself in the promises of warmth and security.

But all he could do was stare at her from where he sat, maintaining the significant distance between them. If he did what lurked in his mind, he was sure to give in. Now was not the time, he needed his mind clear.
