The Sweetest Temptation -
Chapter 225: Won
Chapter 225: Won
He turned his gaze to her once again and noticed that she was stirring, she was almost about to tilt over when she jolted awake.
"You sleep like a baby," He whispered humorously, but he was not smiling, she noticed.
"Sir, you’re awake," She replied in a high pitched voice. She was obviously uncomfortable in the current situation that she was in. She looked at the arm rest of her chair and remembered what she’d done.
"Oh, I’m really sorry sir, I wanted to keep an eye on you but I could not move the chairs at the other side. This had wheels so I –"
"I understand," came his immediate reply, cutting her short. "You did a great job."
Now, he was teasing. She thought to herself as her stomach formed knots.
"Um, sir, is there anything I can do for you?" She asked him, clearly eager to be out of his presence. He squinted his gaze while he beheld her. It was obvious to him that she liked him, he knew that. But her wanting to leave belied everything that he thought was on her mind about him. If a lady liked a man, she’d want to be in his presence most of the time. So, why did she want to leave?
"Yes," He replied, his gaze intent, as if he was studying her. And that was precisely what he was doing.
"Okay sir, what do you need?" She was overly professional, he appreciated that. But there was no need for it at this point. Why didn’t she take advantage of the current situation? He needed a way to get to her, a way to feel her, but her boundaries were clear – and if there was anything he respected, it was boundaries.
"I’ll need you to keep your mouth shut," He started, his gaze still locked with hers. "About everything that happened tonight, no one must know about it, except you."
She listened with rapt attention whilst preparing a bunch of questions in her mind. When she concluded that he was finished, she spoke.
"But sir, what happened?"
"Nothing that matters to you."
Nothing that matters to me?! That is probably the meanest type of way to say mind your business. She thought to herself as her fury began to palpitate. She was in no position to know his personal matters, that much was true. But he’d lost that part of his privacy to her when he told her to keep her mouth shut. She had to be willing and able to help him again if such a moment, such as today, arose in the future. This time, she hoped it wouldn’t.
"I need to know if I’m going to be keeping this a secret. If not, I might as well tell someone else that you’d be more willing to give in to."
Stella, you and your big mouth! What have you done?! She had the terrible urge to apologize but she decided to maintain her ground. It was the hardest task, but she wasn’t about to give in to the way that she was feeling. That sounded a lot like blackmail, just to get information out of him. Her curiosity would put her in trouble.
Matteo was peering at her now, it was clear that she was lost in her thought, but this time, he could not understand why. However, her declaration gave him cause to think. She truly wanted to know about what happened that caused all of this, her claim was genuine. But putting it that way, made it look as if she was going to force the information out of him. That was daring, too daring in fact.
I wonder, is she capable? He wanted to lean in towards her, but the pain of the wound stung right to his nerves. "Blasted thing," He cursed. He did not want to imagine the number of things he wanted to do to her – which he’d not be able to do. He gave in and decided to give her what she wanted.
"I was in a fight."
I knew it!
"It was an opposing gang."
Gang?! Wait, is he –
He must’ve read her questioning expression off her face because his next words were his reply to her question, precisely. "Well since you’ve been friends with Beatrix for so long you probably know the family business.."
She sat back, stunned to silence at his declaration. She hadn’t believed Beatrix when she had told her but it was true? There were mafia groups in California? Well, duh! She’d been cooped up too long, she imagined everything that was in her books remained there, in her books. But now –
"What happened?" Her voice was small when she spoke. It wasn’t entirely surprising. His aura sort of matched that precisely. He was mysterious, and that was necessary to keep people, like her, at bay. Her chest winced at the thought. Were it not for the wound, she’d remain in the dark until the moment that he was ready to let her off. She was very certain that not many other people in the office, most likely the entire staff, knew about this. This right here was a privilege. And she would do all in her power to guard his secret with all her being.
"The operation was a mess and the people that we had a deal with ambushed us and tried to rob us."
Tried. What she was about to ask was completely off the book, but she was very curious. She didn’t care to know who the opposing party was, her mind had been set on the team that she picked.
"Did you win?" She leaned in slightly as she spoke.
Matteo rose his gaze to her. His interest was piqued. That was the question she chose to ask after everything. It was funny, hilarious even. It made him wonder what sort of woman she was. One moment, she was giving him all the signals that hinted at her genuine interest in him, another moment, she was hinting off not wanting anything except business to happen between them. And another moment, she was adorable.
He had never been more occupied with a woman, until now. And he was all in for it. He noticed the innocent curiosity in her gaze. She had the inquisitiveness of a child, that much he could single out, after some of their discussions. But that was it. Nothing else.
"Yes, we won." He whispered huskily.
