Chapter 187: Ugly Truth

She could hear the yelling telling him to open up his mouth and take it like a good boy... But it’s the screams she could hear, the begging - the crying that has tears spilling from her eyes before she can stop them as she watches in horror.

Little Rhys sounded so terrified, so fucking terrified and she wanted to jump into the laptop and get them away from him.

"Open up your pretty little mouth" The man behind him who was taking him from behind voice bellowed before she heard a loud smack and heard Rhys’ small voice wail in pain.

She stayed hunched over, too scared to open her eyes over what she’d see, but she felt Rhys’s hands take hold of her wrists, gently tugging her hands away from her ears.

"Beatrix... Hey, it’s okay - I turned it off....m’sorry - it’s turned off now," he said in a soft voice, but it sounded so sad and she hated that.

Rhys pulls her into him, wrapping her in a hug and she clings to him. She’s not the one that shouldn’t be getting comforted right now; she only watched part of what happened. She doesn’t know how long they stay like that, where she’s just hugging him as close as she can, telling him how sorry she was that happened to him, that she wishes she could’ve done something and he didn’t deserve it. Rhys just keeps quiet, resting his cheek against her shoulder, and she doesn’t understand how he isn’t the one crying.

"Are you okay?" he mumbles, smoothing his hand up and down her back.

"No - of course I’m not. How could I be after that?" she says, leaning back to look at him and wiping her hands under her eyes.

His lips press together, and he sighs, swiping the back of his knuckle under her eye where her fingers had just been. ".....Please don’t cry."

"I don’t know how many times I have to tell you I’m crying because I care Rhys - because I love you. It’s horrific seeing that happen to you - it’s heartbreaking," she says, her voice shaking.

She hated that someone did that to him. She hated that she couldn’t help him.

How could someone who used to play with her do something so terrible?

As she sat there, tears streaming down her face, she couldn’t help but wonder how someone she knew could be capable of such cruelty.

She remembered the times they spent together, playing hide-and-seek, building forts, and laughing until their stomachs hurt.

But now, all of those memories felt tainted. How could she have missed the signs? Were there any signs to begin with? She couldn’t help but feel guilty.

She turned to her father, for a moment she had forgotten he was there.

"Did you know about this?" She asked.

Rhys removed the gag from his mouth and he grimaced.

His father sighed, looking at Rhys.

"Is this... Is this why Damien wanted to marry Beatrix?" Her father asks, his voice laced with pain. And she swallowed a big lump in her throat. "Did you do that for this? To destroy me?"

Beatrix stiffened; she had been so consumed with Rhys’ trauma that she had missed the big picture.

She braced herself to look at Rhys, but now, he was expressionless, so different from a while ago when he was telling her he loved her.

Anything.

"Jesus Christ, you Niarchos men!" Her father hollered. "I get it if you want to destroy me. But Beatrix... She’s got nothing to do with this. Nothing. She doesn’t know anything about this."

Rhys remained unmoved. His eyes were empty.

Her heart beats rapidly, waiting for him.

Her father seems to realize the answer already, and scoff of disbelief leaves his mouth. "Tell me,Rhys," he begins, his voice shaking. "All this time, did you really do that just for the sake of this fucking moment? Do you really not care about her, or have feelings for her... at all?"’

She watched as Rhys didn’t give any answer for a while. But then, he opens his mouth, and she doesn’t breathe.

"It’s payback time." He muttered

The tears that she had been trying to hold back now fell one by one, rolling down her cheeks. To hear those words was just so painful that she wished he could just kill her instead. Her chest hurt.

Did they use her?

"What are you talking about? You guys were using me? Just to get to my father? No—I-I don’t believe it."

Beatrix shook her head.
