The Sweetest Temptation -
Chapter 152: War
Chapter 152: War
Beatrix could feel the anger boiling inside her. She had always known that her engagement to Damien was only because her father was blackmailed and they all never wanted this union but she had never thought her father would stoop so low as to forcibly take her away once it didn’t benefit him anymore .
She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down.
"Dad, you can’t just barge in here and take me away without my consent. I have a life here with Damien, and I’m not leaving it behind just because you’re scared for my safety," Beatrix said firmly.
Her father’s expression hardened. "This is not up for discussion, Beatrix. You’re coming with us, and that’s final."
Ares stepped in, trying to diffuse the tension. "Dad, I understand your concerns, but I’m sure that Damien is doing everything in his power to keep Beatrix safe. He has a team of highly skilled bodyguards who are constantly watching over her, and she’s never alone."
Beatrix’s father shook his head. "I’m sorry, but I can’t take any chances. I won’t rest easy until she’s back home with us where she belongs."
Beatrix could feel tears prickling at the corner of her eyes. She had always been close to her father, and it hurt her to see him so determined to tear her away from her happiness.
She couldn’t imagine going back to her old life, living under the constant scrutiny and control of her father.
But she knew she couldn’t give in so easily.
"Dad, please," she pleaded. "I know you mean well, but I can’t just leave everything behind. I love Damien, and I want to be with him. I’m not a child anymore, and I can make my own decisions."
Her father looked at her for a long moment before nodding slowly. "Very well, Beatrix. But know that if anything happens to you, I’ll hold him responsible."
Beatrix glanced at Damien to see his reaction but his face was blank as a canvas. She couldn’t see what he was thinking about. She couldn’t help but have a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach.
She didn’t like how indifferent and cold he looked right now as if her father wasn’t determining their future right now.
He spoke for the first time in the last half an hour, clearing his throat and looked to Remo, Ares and Matteo "Can you guys give us a minute - I need to have a moment alone with Beatrix."
They all frowned at his words.Remo shook his head, "You’re sending us out? From our own sister? You have had her for almost a year now and now you’re sending us away for spending just a few minutes with her? Damien Niarchos, you haven’t even married her yet and you’re preventing her from spending time with her family?"
Damie blew out an annoyed breath, and rubbed his forefinger and thumb against his eyes like he was trying to subside his irritation.
"Alright." Matteo replied and pulled Remo away from the room.
Stella and Ava hugged her tightly before they both walked out of the room.
Her father stared at her for a moment before he sighed, "We will be just outside. If you need anything let us know."
Beatrix nodded and gave him a faint smile,
"Alright."
They all left, leaving her alone with Damien in the room.
"Everything okay?" Beatrix prodded gently, wondering what he wanted some privacy for.
Damien strode towards her and sat beside her on the bed and took her hand to hold it in his lap with both hands.
"Bea," Damien began, his voice soft and filled with emotion. "I don’t think I’ve ever told you how much you mean to me. You are the most important person in my life, and I don’t know what I would do without you."
Beatrix looked up at Damien, her eyes glistening with tears. She knew that he loved her, but hearing him say it so directly and passionately took her breath away.
"I remember the day we first met," Damien continued. "I was so nervous, and yet so excited. I knew that I was making the best decision of my life. And every day since then, I have felt the same way."
He squeezed Beatrix’s hands gently, his eyes never leaving hers. "You are my partner, my best friend, and the love of my life. I cherish every moment we spend together, every laugh, every tear, every joy and sorrow. You complete me in a way that no one else ever could."
Beatrix couldn’t help but let out a sob, overwhelmed by the intensity of Damien’s words. She threw her arms around him, holding him tightly.
"I love you, Damien," she whispered into his ear.
"I love you too, Bea," he replied, holding her just as tightly. "And I always will."
He sighed once they pulled apart and planted a kiss on her forehead, "I want you to go home with your father." He blurted out destroying the magical moment.
"What? Why?" She questioned in a single breath as her eyes between his as the sick feeling in her stomach grew.
"I think it’s for the best."
"Wait, no hang on a minute. Why suddenly? I’m not going with them, I’m going home" Beatrix told him, feeling her chest tighten "I’m going home with you"
Damien pressed his lips together, his brows tilting together and his eyes started to gloss over.
"No. I think some vacation at your father’s house will be good for you. You have been through so much these past few days."
"What the hell are you talking about? Vacation at my father’s house? You know how overprotective they are. I’m not getting any vacation in that house.
Damien I’m going home" her brows scrunched in confusion while her pulse started to pump faster in her body.
She knew that he was bent on sending her home a while back but she thought that he had changed his mind after their last conversation.
But now that this had happened what she was afraid of was actually happening.
"I hope you’re not fucking blaming yourself for this. We never knew this was going to happen. None of this is your fault. You didn’t have the superpowers to foretold that Alina would be kidnapping me and I was going to get shot.
Sending me away won’t ease your guilt."
Damien shook his head and averted his eyes from hers and his voice started to wail as he spoke
"No. I’m not sending you because I want to ease my guilt. War is coming and I don’t want you caught up in the middle. I need to know you’re safe before I can start anything else."
And that’s the split second Beatrix felt her heart crack that deep it was ringing in her ears.
She didn’t want war. She needed her man.
"I don’t care I’m going with you - you’re not leaving me." she told him, starting to find it harder to talk with how hard she was breathing and the lump blocking his throat.
Damien’s voice became gentle as he held her wrists tighter until she couldn’t move them "Beatrix ...
Stop"
Tears slipped out of her eyes as she choked out, "No, you stop. You’re not leaving me. I promised I’d never leave you and you - you can’t leave either."
Damien’s lips trembled as he pressed them together, trying to hide his emotions. He searched his red eyes over her face like he was in agony.
"I’m not leaving you," he said, chewing on the inside of his lip and looking down. "I’m letting you go... Because that’s how much you mean to me - you’ll always come first to me."
She begged again, pulling her wrists from his grip and taking hold of his face. She tried to kiss him, but he stopped her, and that action alone felt like a barbed wire just ripped straight through her.
"Please don’t do this. This isn’t what you want," she pleaded.
"Life isn’t fair, darling. We don’t always get what we want," he said, his voice getting quieter.
She couldn’t believe what was happening. "Stop saying shit like that. Hurting me isn’t going to fucking help me, Damien. I need you - I know you’re scared, I know what you’re doing but this isn’t right - please listen to me," she said, her voice starting to become tight and broken with the sobs brewing in her chest.
"I’m doing this because I want to protect you. I need you safe. I will come for you once I’m done taking over my empire. And when I finally come for you no one will be standing in my way."
Beatrix shook her head, "You don’t get to tell me what I need, I get to decide what’s good for me - we’ve already been over this," she argued, trying to keep a hold of him but he tugged his hands away and she choked on the sob that was threatening to strangle her. "You can’t just walk away from me like this."
