The Sweetest Temptation -
Chapter 133: Freedom
Chapter 133: Freedom
Damien
Flashback
8 years old
Damien and his mother were playing in the garden at the back of their house. The sun was shining brightly, making the flowers bloom with vibrant colors. Damien was running around, chasing after the butterflies that fluttered in the air. His mother was sitting on a bench, watching him with a smile on her face.
Every time Damien caught a butterfly, he would come running back to his mother, holding the butterfly up in his hands.
Damien said excitedly, "Look, Mommy, I found a butterfly!
His mother smiled and ruffled his hair, "That’s great, honey. What color is it?
Damien gave a proud look and proudly declared, "It’s yellow and black. Just like a bumblebee."
His mother chuckled and nodded, "it is. But remember, don’t chase it too much, or it might fly away."
"I won’t, Mommy. I just want to see it up close." Damien said, staring at the butterfly.
"That’s good. You know, you can also make friends with the butterfly by sitting still and being quiet.
Damien nodded, "Okay, Mommy. I’ll try."
He didn’t have any friends. He wished he had a friend though.
Damien sat down on the grass next to the butterfly and watched it closely. The butterfly flies around for a while and then landed on Damien’s hand.
Damien looked at his mother, happiness gleaming in his eyes, ""Mommy, look! The butterfly is on my hand!"
His mother smiled, "That’s amazing, honey. You were very quiet and still, just like I told you."
"Yeah, I made a new friend." He thought no one wanted him as a friend; he guess it wasn’t true. Even this beautiful beautiful butterfly wanted to be friends with a useless boy like him.
His mother beamed, "That’s wonderful. And you know what, we can also make friends with the flowers and the birds in the garden.
Damien looked confused, "Really?! Can we do that now?"
His mother nodded, "Of course, we can."
Damien was overjoyed with the attention and would run off to catch another one.
As the sun started to set, Damien and his mother decided to play a game of hide and seek. Damien would hide behind the bushes while his mother counted. Every time she found him, they would both laugh and Damien would run off to hide again.
When the game was over, Damien and his mother sat down on the bench, tired from all the running. They enjoyed the peaceful sound of the crickets and the fresh scent of the flowers. Damien’s mother put her arm around him and hugged him close, telling him how much she loved him. Damien smiled and snuggled into her embrace, feeling grateful for the time spent with his mother in the beautiful garden.
"Mommy, will we ever leave this place? Let’s run away. I don’t want to be here anymore." Damien pleaded with his mom as they sat in the garden looking at the butterflies.
He wished he was as free as the butterflies. He wanted to be able to have the freedom to do as he pleased. Go anywhere that he wants.
His mother chuckled and placed a kiss on his head, "You know wherever we go your father will find us. We can never hide away from that monster."
Damien pouted and nodded. He knew how powerful his father was. No one would help them and they couldn’t hide forever. That’s why he had to be strong. He had to be so powerful that he could protect his mother one day.
"Okay. One day I’m going to take you far away from this place. Where do you want to go mommy?"
His mother turned to look at him and pinched his little nose, "Anywhere that my son is. I don’t care as long as I’m by your side!"
She declared and tickled him, causing a ripple of laughter to course through him.
"Mommy...stop! Stop!!" He placed through a fits of laughter and his mother laughed pulling away from him.
" You know just as a caterpillar sheds its cocoon to become a beautiful butterfly, we too would one day break free from our limitations and embrace a new sense of freedom.
Just as the butterfly flutters freely through the air, unencumbered by the constraints of its former life, we too can spread our wings and soar towards our dreams and aspirations. We can leave behind the weight of our past and embrace the limitless possibilities of our future.
The butterfly also reminds us that freedom is a journey, not a destination. It takes courage, patience, and determination to break free from our cocoons and embrace a new life. But the reward is a life of beauty, wonder, and adventure.
So, like the butterfly, we have to patience until we can break free of our cocoons and live a life of freedom.
Damien blinked, "You really think we can one day like the butterfly also get our freedom?"
His mother nodded, "Of course!"
"What nonsense are you feeding him?!" A loud voice boom and he and his mother both flinched from the anger laced in the voice.
They knew this familiar voice all to well to know what it meant.
His mother turned around and her face turned ashened when she saw the familiar monster.
"N-nothing." She stuttered, trying to put on a strong facade but Damien could see the slight tremble of her hands.
His father grabbed his mother’s hair tightly and pulled her towards him, his eyes filled with anger. "You never listen to me!" he shouted, his voice filled with rage. "I work hard every day to provide for this family and you are planning on running away?!"
His mother tried to pull away, tears streaming down her face. "Please, stop," she begged. "You’re hurting me."
But her pleas fell on deaf ears as his father continued to yell, "You’re nothing without me Bitch! Remember that and if you dare try to run away with my son I will ruin your family and your life. Do you understand?!"
His mother nodded, "Y-yes."
His father let go of her and with a defeated heart she sank on her knees and pulled her face in her hands as she cried.
"Follow me boy! I guess I have to give you a dose of your medicine to remind you that you’re never leaving from my hands. You’re mine to mold and shape as I see fit!"
*************
Beatrix entered Damian’s room quietly, noticing that he was tossing and turning in his sleep. She approached the bed and saw that Damian was sweating profusely, his face contorted in fear. Beatrix sat down on the edge of the bed and gently shook Damien’s shoulder.
He had decided to take a nap after they had breakfast and watched a couple of movies. The medication he took makes him lethargy so Beatrix decided to check up on him. She didn’t expect to find him having a nightmare this early afternoon.
He woke up with a start, gasping for breath. Beatrix hugged him tightly, trying to calm him down.
"It’s okay," she whispered, "it was just a nightmare." Damien looked at her, his eyes still filled with fear.
"I-I—saw him." He whispered almost as if he was talking to himself.
Beatrix frowned. Whom did he see for him to look so scared? If there was anything he knew the person was really a force to reckon with to make Damien look this scared.
Damien racked his hands through his hair and sighed, "My father."
Beatrix grabbed his hands and gave him a small smile, "It’s just a nightmare Damien. Now you’re strong. He can never hurt you again."
Damien looked at Beatrix, the fear slowly dissipating from his eyes. He let out a deep breath and nodded. "I know. I just can’t shake it off. It feels so real," he said, his voice shaking.
Beatrix pulled him into another hug, rubbing soothing circles on his back. "It’s okay, it’s just your mind playing tricks on you. You’re safe now. I won’t let anyone hurt you," she whispered, holding him tight.
Damien let out a deep sigh, finally relaxing into Beatrix’s embrace. "Thank you," he whispered, "for always being here for me."
Beatrix pulled away, cupping Damien’s face in her hands. "I’ll always be here for you, no matter what," she said, looking into his eyes.
Damien smiled, finally feeling a sense of peace wash over him. He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to Beatrix’s forehead, grateful for her love and support.
Together, they lay back down, Damien snuggling close as Beatrix held him tight, chasing away the remnants of his nightmare.
Beatrix sighed, it’s hard to see the two people she loved each one of them having so much buried traumas and pain inside of them.
She longed to reach into their chest and remove the weight that was crushing them, to ease their pain and make them whole again.
She made a silent vow to herself , to help them find a new normal, one that was filled with love, happiness, and contentment. A world where they would no longer be burdened by the past and would experience only joy, comfort, and bliss.
