Chapter 105: Disfigured
"Haven’t you miss your brother too?" Matteo smiled and ruffled her hair affectionately.
Beatrix hugged him too, "Of course I have brother!"
Remo stood there and watched the interaction, his face blank.
"Hey Remo." Beatrix said smiling at him, her smile dropped when he didn’t smile back at her.
Beatrix’s heart couldn’t help but sank.
"Why the fuck do you look like that?!" He bellowed his brows furrowed together.
Beatrix blinked, a faint flush staining her cheeks.
"Don’t tell me that bastard has been maltreating you to the extent that he can’t even give you a proper meal?"
Remo strode towards her and grabbed her hand as he gave her a once over.
"I’ve just been really busy with getting to know how to run a home." Beatrix replied, trying to deflect the question.
"Bullshit. You’re skin and bones now. What, did your fiancé put you on some crazy diet or something?"
Beatrix winced at the accusation in her brother’s voice. "It’s not like that, Remo. I’ve just been eating healthier and exercising more, that’s all."
"Well, it’s not healthy to lose this much weight so quickly. You’re going to end up sick or something."
Beatrix sighed and smiled at her brother. Remo was always the first to notice any bad things about her. He didn’t talk much and he rarely showed her affection when she grew up but he was always there for her
"I’m fine,Remo. I promise. I just wanted to make a few changes for myself, that’s all."
"Well, you shouldn’t have to change yourself for anyone, especially not some guy. You were fine the way you were."
Beatrix smiled at her brother’s protectiveness. "I know, but this is just something I wanted to do for myself. I want to fit in my wedding gown."
Beatrix lied. Damien’s condition had taken a toil on her and she could barely eat anything.
Remo grumbled, but Beatrix could see the concern in his eyes soften
"Fine, but you better take care of yourself. And if that jerk ever makes you feel like you have to change, you let me know and I’ll knock some sense into him."
Beatrix laughed and gave her brother a hug. "I will, don’t worry. I love you."
"I love you too, sis. Just take care of yourself, okay?"
"I will." Beatrix promised.
Beatrix glanced at her father and her heart sank deep in her chest. She could see the guilt glinting in his eyes.
He still felt bad for marrying her off.
"Come on guys, Damien really treats me well! He even cooks for me and pampers me a lot."
Matteo frowned, "Well it doesn’t look like that. You have dark circles around your eyes and like your brother said you have lost a good amount of weight.
If he is maltreating you, let us know. We will protect you Beatrix. You’re a little princess, no man can treat you like that."
Beatrix sighed, "I know but I’m fine really! I’m happy here with Damien."
"Speaking about your fiancé where is he? Don’t tell me he doesn’t have the decency to welcome us?" Her father frowned
Beatrix stiffened and she exchanged a nervous glance with Xavier.
"About that why don’t you come inside? We will talk about this." She said quietly, her voice barely a whisper. Nerves fluttering in her stomach.
She was afraid of what they would do if they find out about Damien.
"Alright." Matteo nodded.
Once they seated on the plush couches Beatrix fiddled with her fingers. She didn’t know how to break the news to them.
They waited patiently for her to tell them what the hell was going on but Beatrix couldn’t bring her self to break the news to them.
Beatrix sat on the couch, her father and brother seated across from her. She took a deep breath, preparing to deliver the news that she has been dreading for months.
"Father," she began , her voice shaking. "I have something to tell you."
Her father and brothers look at her with concern, sensing that something was amiss.
"What is it, dear?" her father asked gently.
Beatrix took another deep breath, her eyes filling with tears.
"It’s my fiancé," she says, her voice barely above a whisper.
"He was in a coma for two months after a bomb attack but he has woken up.
Her father and brothers gasp in shock, their eyes wide with disbelief. "Oh my god," Matteo said, his voice hoarse. "We had no idea. How is he doing?"
Beatrix smiled through her tears, her heart filled with hope and gratitude.
"He’s going to be okay," she said. "The doctors say he’s making a remarkable recovery. It’s going to be a long road to full recovery, but I know he’ll get there."
They nodded, "Alright."
"It’s just that he was—" she trailed off.
"Beatrix ?" Matteo called her gently and she lift her eyes from staring at the floor, her breathing evening out.
She still said nothing, her mind working over all of how they were going to react next.
Remo leaned forward with concern as he asked, "Beatrix, are you alright?"
Her voice caught in her throat at first, but then her pitch raises slightly, "I-I-I’m fine."
"So what were you going to say? You can tell us."
Beatrix meet Xavier’s gaze and he nodded at her giving her reassuring smile.
"He was disfigured by the blast. And because he was in coma for a long time he is experiencing seizures."
Beatrix let out the breath she didn’t know she was holding. Now she was waiting for them to say something.
"So you’re saying that Damien Niarchos is disfigured and experiencing seizures?"
Remo was the first person to break the silence.
"Yes."
"Shit! I thought the bastard was dead but disfigured by a bomb blast? That’s more horrible than I thought." He sighed.
"So he is still at the hospital?" Matteo asked.
"Yes." Beatrix replied avoiding eye contact with them.
"Was he attacked by the Russians?" Her father chimed in.
"Yes." Xavier replied this time.
