The Supreme Soldier in the City -
Chapter 73 - 73 73 Masters of the Capital of SSUP
73: Chapter 73 Masters of the Capital of SSUP 73: Chapter 73 Masters of the Capital of SSUP James Brown went home first, changed his clothes, and then had some rest since there was still plenty of time before the end of work.
Around four-thirty, he received a call from Gina Lopez, asking him to wait for her at her place.
James Brown didn’t understand what Gina was up to, but he went straight to her home anyway.
Gina hadn’t arrived yet, and though James could easily unlock her door, doing so would be somewhat inappropriate.
He didn’t want everyone to know he could just enter other people’s homes—after all, that would make others feel very insecure.
Less than twenty minutes later, Gina was back, taking out her keys to unlock the door while saying, “Tonight, you’re coming with me to a banquet.”
Following Gina inside, James asked, “As what, exactly?”
While walking toward her bedroom, Gina responded, “As the driver.”
James let out a sigh of relief.
If he had to go as her boyfriend, that would be more troublesome, but being the driver was much simpler.
About twenty minutes later, Gina emerged wearing a black evening gown, noble and elegant, which made James’s eyes go wide.
“How do I look?” Gina asked, facing James’s gaze.
“Absolutely stunning, Ms.
Lopez.
How many men are you planning to mesmerize tonight?”
Gina gave James a sidelong glance, but she didn’t really mind his flattery.
If it had been another man who spoke like that, she would have glared at him by now.
“All right, let’s get going.”
“Hey, aren’t you cold?”
“I’ll be in the car as soon as I step out, and then I’ll head straight into the hotel from the car.
I’ll only be cold for a little while,” Gina said, wrapping a shawl around her shoulders.
James cracked a smile.
Sometimes this woman was truly strange—braving the freezing weather for the sake of beauty, shoulders bare.
They took the elevator down to the underground parking lot, where James dutifully took on the role of driver, opening the car door for Gina.
After Gina gave him the address, she added, “Don’t leave tonight.
I might come out at any time, and I’ll probably have to drink.
If someone tries to take me away, you must stop them.”
James frowned, “Isn’t there someone who has nefarious intentions towards you?”
Gina nodded, “There’s someone else who will be at the banquet tonight.
He’s really annoying and has been interested in me for a while.
I’m afraid he might try to take me away using the opportunity.”
“Then why are you going?”
“I must go because tonight’s banquet will be attended by a very important person arriving in YODC City.
Getting in touch with her would be a huge opportunity for our company.
I can’t lose this chance.”
“But what if you suffer because of this opportunity?”
“Nonsense, that’s why I’m bringing you along.
Aren’t you very capable?
Can’t you ensure my safety?”
James grinned, “So it seems I’m not just a driver but also a bodyguard?”
Gina nodded, “Exactly.
You’ve served in the military, and you have experience tackling multiple opponents.
Therefore, I feel very safe having you as my bodyguard.”
“How do you know about my fighting several people?”
“Didn’t you fight a group when you went out with Sarah Utah from your logistics department?
The whole company knows about it.
How could I, the boss, not know?”
“So, my heroic deeds have spread that wide already,” James said with a smug expression.
Gina nodded and said, “Yes, you have many heroic tales.
You got Douglas Smith locked up in detention and also have that ambiguous relationship with Director Green.”
“What ambiguous relationship?” James jumped, wondering if everyone in the company also knew about that.
“You don’t have to pretend in front of me.
Are you daring to say that you have nothing to do with Sunny Nguyen?” Gina Lopez looked down her nose at him.
James Brown chuckled dryly and said, “Ms.
Lopez, could you not falsely accuse people?
These kinds of things should not be said carelessly.
I don’t mind, but if Director Green gets a bad reputation because of such rumors, that would be harming her.”
Gina’s eyes narrowed as she said, “You seem quite concerned about her.
No wonder you beat up her ex-husband and that woman.”
James broke out in a sweat and replied, “I just couldn’t stand watching that pair of adulterers make her life miserable.
Acting on impulse, I ended up hitting them.
After all, Director Green is part of the same company as me; I couldn’t just stand by and watch her being bullied.”
Gina watched James through the rearview mirror, while James drove seriously, their eyes meeting in the reflection.
He gave a bitter smile and said, “Ms.
Lopez, can we not stare at me like that?
I haven’t done anything wrong, have I?”
Gina said indifferently, “I’m just reminding you, don’t overdo things with Director Green.
She just got divorced, and if others found out, it would be bad for her reputation.”
James sweated again and asked, “Then, Ms.
Lopez, I am still driving for you.
Won’t others think there’s something between us?”
“That’s their business; I don’t mind,” Gina replied flatly.
James was at a loss for words and simply stopped discussing the issue with Gina.
Soon, they arrived at YODC City’s most luxurious hotel.
James parked the car, and they both took the elevator up to the twentieth floor.
At the elevator on the twentieth floor, people immediately came to greet Gina and escorted her to a large hall up front, while James was shown to a smaller hall nearby.
In this smaller hall, there were already more than a dozen men, all well-built and gathered together, engaged in animated conversation.
These men were all bodyguards; the attendees today were either rich or prestigious, so bringing bodyguards was entirely normal.
As James entered, everyone looked at him.
He greeted them and took a seat alongside them.
All men and all in the same profession, they got along quite well.
After brief introductions, they resumed their conversation while eating.
These bodyguards boasted about their own glorious feats, like their most impressive protection details or the most dangerous moments, but James soon lost interest.
The incidents they described were simple protection assignments, the most challenging being kidnappings.
Compared to what James had done before, these tasks were far too mundane and lacked any technical substance.
During this time, a few more people entered the room and mingled well with everyone.
But when two more individuals arrived, a noticeable disconnect was felt.
These two headed straight to a secluded spot, quickly consumed some food, then closed their eyes without uttering a word.
James’s interest piqued instantly.
Their behavior indicated that they had undergone rigorous training—eating quickly and resting with closed eyes was what true bodyguards did to ensure they remained physically and mentally prepared.
Suddenly, the two opened their eyes and looked directly at James.
He smiled faintly at them.
Though they weren’t from the same unit, James felt a sense of familiarity seeing them.
His two glances were enough to alert them to his formidable strength.
They nodded slightly, then closed their eyes again.
They had sensed James’s powerful presence and were now keeping an eye on him, even with their eyes closed, a sensation familiar to strong individuals.
In such a place, among ordinary bodyguards, to find someone like James, a true expert, meant they had to stay vigilant.
James understood their thoughts and approached their table, sitting down with a light smile, “I used to be stationed with a unit in the Capital of SSUP.
Now I’m retired, just an average Joe.”
As James approached, they opened their eyes.
One of them asked, “Which unit?”
“Heh, similar to yours,” James did not give a direct answer.
Hawk Squad was a national secret, engaged in missions unknown to the public.
Now that he was retired, he could not casually mention Hawk Squad.
They nodded, understanding the discipline within special military units; once retired, one must not speak carelessly.
“I won’t disturb you two any longer.
If you’re not in a hurry to leave, feel free to call me for a drink when you’re free,” offered James, leaving his phone number with them.
One of them glanced at the number then tore the paper up.
James did not take this as impolite.
As a bodyguard from C Park, if one couldn’t memorize a phone number at a glance, they were not fit for the job.
James nodded, turned, and left, joining the other bodyguards.
Compared to the two from C Park, the others exuded a more ordinary air.
Among them were some nearly as capable, but none matched the true bodyguard consciousness—ready for any eventuality, where a small mistake could have serious consequences.
These bodyguards clearly lacked that awareness, but James did not dislike the commonplace air they carried.
After returning to urban life, his mindset had shifted; the common world represented relaxation, without the need for constant high tension.
