Chapter 69 - 69 69 Doughlas Smith's Conspiracy

69: Chapter 69 Doughlas Smith’s Conspiracy 69: Chapter 69 Doughlas Smith’s Conspiracy Emma Campbell left, and James Brown didn’t feel much attachment.

It was just a pleasant memory, being able to hold such a girl for a night, indeed worth reminiscing about.

A little after eight in the morning, trucks loaded with goods arrived, and the warehouse staff methodically arranged the unloading, counting, and registering of goods, all without much input from James Brown.

As the manager, he held a high position in the warehouse, and he didn’t really need to do much at that time; just small talk with the company’s purchasing department was sufficient.

It took an entire day for all the goods to be stored, and everything seemed normal, with not a single issue.

In the next three days, there wasn’t anything special happening in the warehouse.

Goods came and went, making it very busy.

If James hadn’t been thinking about Douglas Smith’s arrangement for him to be there, he would not have considered anything else.

On the fifth day, when there was hardly any work, some workers suggested having a drink in the evening since the next day was Sunday, with no incoming or outgoing goods, and everyone had been quite busy throughout the week and needed some relaxation.

James quickly agreed, but instead of taking everyone out, he bought some drinks and snacks, allowing everyone to have a good time drinking in the warehouse canteen.

During the meal, many staff members frequently toasted to James, notably two loaders who were particularly enthusiastic, not only continuously toasting to James but also encouraging others to do the same.

It’s normal to get boisterous during drinking, but James soon noticed something off from the glances exchanged between the two men; it seemed they were intent on getting him drunk.

James could actually hold his liquor very well; normally, a liter of strong liquor wouldn’t be a problem.

However, after six to seven hundred milliliters, he pretended to be too drunk to continue and, with Brandon Cooper’s support, went back to his room and fell into a deep sleep on his bed.

Later, after one in the morning, while everyone in the warehouse was deep asleep, two individuals stealthily moved to the front gate, quietly opened it, and then slipped back to their dormitory.

Once the gate was open, four people sneaked into the warehouse and went straight to one of the storerooms, first prying open its door.

They then entered and began moving items.

The warehouse stored electronic components.

Although the quantity wasn’t large, their value was significant.

Just a few small boxes had a worth of tens of thousands, and the four men quickly carried out two boxes each, then silently made their way out.

The next day, the entire logistics team suddenly stormed into the warehouse where James was, including Emma Davis, the General Manager, Douglas Smith, the Deputy General Manager, and also Sarah Utah, Sarah Davis, and Andrew Brown had all come.

Seeing these people, James was surprised and greeted them, saying, “Mr.

D, what brings you here?”

Emma Davis nodded and said, “I came to see how you’re doing.

After all, you’re from our logistics department, we can’t have any slip-ups.

Besides, everyone else came to see you too.”

James quickly expressed his thanks, “Mr.

D, I’m doing well here, please come in.”

Inside his office, James invited everyone to sit down and poured water for them.

When Sarah Utah took the glass from James, she smiled at him, their relationship being the best within the company, naturally closer than with others.

After briefly inquiring about work, Emma Davis turned to Sarah Utah and said, “Little Utah, could you check the inventory?

Even though Little Lee from our department is here, we need to be serious to avoid other departments criticizing us for being negligent.”

Sarah Utah agreed and left.

James felt warmth in his heart; although Emma Davis was usually very reserved, she truly treated the logistics department like family and was indeed a good leader.

Douglas Smith then stood up and said, “I’ll help Little Utah, to make it quicker.” And he followed her out.

Douglas wasn’t there to take advantage of Sarah Utah that day; in a place as crowded and complex as the warehouse, he couldn’t possibly make a move.

His following her was out of fear that Sarah Utah might protect James from reporting any issues.

“Little Utah, you need to be very careful in your work, not biased just because James is from our department,” Douglas caught up to Sarah, deliberately using a managerial tone to remind her.

Sarah, who disliked Douglas intensely, however, didn’t dare offend him and simply replied with a smile, “Thank you for the reminder, Mr.

Smith.”

The two first went to warehouses one and two, which held a lot of goods.

Sarah diligently counted everything, although Douglas was constantly rushing her.

However, reaching warehouse three, storing the electronic components, Douglas unusually slowed down.

Sensing Sarah’s confusion, Douglas immediately coughed and said, “The other goods are very bulky; one item weighs over a ton and can’t be removed without mechanical equipment, so there’s no risk of theft.

But electronic components are too easy to carry out; one person could take two boxes and their value is also very high, so we really need to be thorough here.”

Sarah nodded; she was always very careful when checking these components, not needing Douglas’s reminder.

Douglas stood by, arms crossed, closely watching Sarah as she counted.

He was waiting for Sarah to finish and then show signs of panic, giving him the chance to righteously blame James and have him expelled from the company.

Who then would dare ruin his chances with Sarah?

“Mr.

Smith, I’ve finished counting,” Sarah said, her face calm as she prepared to leave.

“Finished?

Is it correct?” Douglas Smith immediately asked in surprise.

Holding the list, Sarah replied, “Yes, it’s correct.

Look, the inventory count matches the numbers here exactly.”

Douglas Smith frowned and said, “That doesn’t seem right.

I feel like there’s something missing.

Count again.”

Sarah was displeased.

She always took her counting task seriously, and Douglas’s comment was a clear dismissal of her work.

However, as he was the Deputy General Manager, she could only bite her tongue and count again.

“It’s clearly correct,” she insisted afterward.

“That’s impossible!

There are clearly eight boxes missing,” Douglas exclaimed loudly.

“What missing?

Mr.

Smith, if you don’t believe it, you can count it yourself,” Sarah retorted, unable to hold back her irritation.

Douglas, now ignoring Sarah’s tone, carefully recounted the boxes himself.

To his astonishment, not a single box was missing.

He had arranged for eight boxes of electronic components to be stolen from here last night, and his people had even called him after the theft.

How could it be that nothing was missing now?

“I know!

There must be empty boxes here, yes, that’s it!” Douglas cleverly shouted as he realized and then boastfully added, “Call Mr.

Davis and the others here.

I’m going to publicly expose James Brown’s trick.

He thinks he can cover up lost goods with a few empty boxes.”

Sarah frowned, not believing for a minute that James would do that.

She ran back and angrily told Emma Davis, “Mr.

Davis, I’ve counted twice, and not even one box is missing, but Mr.

Smith insists there are empty ones and wants to open them up.

This is clearly harassment.”

Emma Davis frowned at this.

She also disliked Douglas but out of respect for the higher-ups, she didn’t challenge him.

However, she wouldn’t allow him to recklessly disrupt the department’s work.

But Emma was a cautious person.

She turned to James, asking, “Little Lee, there’s no problem here, right?”

James simply smiled and assured her, “Mr.

Davis, don’t worry.

I won’t let our logistics department be embarrassed.”

Emma nodded in understanding.

If James was so calm, then there probably was no issue.

However, Douglas’s allegation made him quite suspicious.

Upon reaching the warehouse, Douglas was directing two loaders who had been coaxing James into drinking heavily the previous night.

“Mr.

Davis, I suspect there are empty boxes here, and we are opening them now to check.”

Emma frowned and questioned, “Douglas, isn’t this baseless suspicion of a colleague problematic?”

Douglas immediately responded, “Mr.

Davis, this isn’t a baseless suspicion.

I’m sure there are empty boxes.

Ask these two loaders if you don’t believe me.”

Emma Davis turned to the loaders, who glanced nervously at James before nodding and saying, “Today the boxes felt different from how they were arranged yesterday, so… there must be something wrong.”

This response from the loaders made everyone look at James, who remained confident and unperturbed.

Douglas chuckled to himself, seeing James so composed.

“You’re really good at pretending.

If I didn’t already know some items were missing, I could easily have been fooled.”

Emma suggested impatiently, “Then let’s thoroughly check to see if anything is actually missing.”

Douglas insisted, “Be very thorough.

Don’t assume just because the weights are similar that everything is in order.

There might be stones or something in there for all we know.”

After saying this, Douglas glanced at James, who couldn’t hide his growing nervousness.

This delighted Douglas, knowing he had finally exposed James’s ruse.

Good thing he was smart enough not to be easily fooled.

Sarah looked anxious.

She trusted James strongly and suspected that Douglas was up to no good.

She gently tugged James’s arm and whispered, “What do we do?”

James winked at Sarah and whispered back close to her ear, “Don’t worry, nothing’s wrong.”

This close proximity to Sarah made James inwardly admire her smooth, snow-white skin.

Her name truly suited her well.

Seeing James so sure of himself, Sarah felt relieved but then suddenly realized how close she was to him.

A blush crept onto her pale face, and she quickly shifted a step away to maintain some distance.
