49: Chapter 48: Mount Smith Picking Faults 49: Chapter 48: Mount Smith Picking Faults James Brown sneezed twice in the office, and Jessica Wilson immediately laughed and said, “Little Lee, someone’s thinking about you early in the morning.”
James rubbed his nose and said, “Yeah, being this handsome is tough.”
Sarah Utah chuckled and said, “James, you’re really funny.”
James spoke seriously, “It’s not about being funny.
You don’t understand, no matter how low-key I am, my dazzling brilliance can’t be hidden.
Just by standing here, countless beautiful women throw themselves at me.”
Having worked in the logistics department for a week, James was already familiar with everyone.
These people weren’t pretentious, and all were ordinary staff, so they got along well.
James liked to joke with them.
Although Nancy Smith was present and he couldn’t make any inappropriate jokes, the general banter was harmless.
The whole office burst into laughter.
Andrew Brown pointed at James, trying to hold back his laughter, and said, “James, then bring one of these girls to show us, let us have an eye-opener.”
Emily Smith glanced at Sarah and laughed, “If you can win over our Little Erin, I’ll take my hat off to you.
Forget about any other beauties, just be careful not to ruin your image in front of her.”
Sarah’s face flushed red, and she stuttered, “Emily, don’t joke about people like that.”
James squinted at Sarah, shook his head, and said, “Little Erin, although you’re beautiful, you’re not my type.
I prefer the wild ones.
You’re too gentle, suited for domestic life, not for a wild-hearted man like me.”
Emily Smith curled her lips and said, “Every man’s heart is wild before marriage.
The most important thing is to keep that heart under control and never give them a chance to go out and paint the town red.
If I had to deal with someone like you, a wild monkey, I’d make sure you’d behave.”
James chuckled, “Then it seems that your brother-in-law must be well-disciplined by you.”
Emily Smith smiled proudly and said, “Of course, he used to be wilder than you.
After getting married, he’s home by nine every night without fail.
You don’t need me to tell you, look at Andrew.
He used to be quite the charmer.
Now he’s as well-behaved as a cat.
Even when there’s a company party, he begs for permission from his wife.”
Andrew immediately rolled his eyes and said, “Why are you dragging me into this?
I’m responsible, and my wife cares about me, that’s all.”
William Clark laughed and said, “Andrew, stop bragging.
Just a few months ago, when your face was scratched, you said you hit something, but it was clearly from your wife’s nails.
How tough your wife is, we all know.”
Andrew’s face turned bright red, and he was too embarrassed to speak, as everyone in the office burst into laughter.
Emily Smith went over to him, placed her arm on his shoulder, and said, “Andrew, there’s no shame in that.
Fear comes from love.
If you didn’t treat your wife well, she would’ve already slapped you across the face, not just scratched you.”
Andrew quickly nodded and said, “Exactly, we have a great relationship.
The occasional fight is just a spice to our affection.”
And once again, everyone laughed, but they were suddenly silenced by a loud shout.
“This is working hours, what are you all chatting about instead of working?”
Douglas Smith walked in with a grim face, scrutinizing everyone with a fierce gaze.
Everyone promptly returned to their desks.
Though no one respected Douglas, he was still a deputy director, and they couldn’t handle the trouble if he really wanted to make it.
Now everyone knew he was likely looking for trouble with James, it was hard to predict how he might exploit the situation.
Douglas displayed his authority, deliberately giving James a taunting look filled with mockery, then turned and walked out.
As soon as Douglas left, Emily swiftly rolled her chair over to James and whispered, “James, you need to be careful, that guy likes to be sneaky, never know when he’ll make a move on you.”
James smiled broadly and gratefully said, “Thanks, Emily.
I’m not afraid of him; I’ll meet the army as it comes and dam the floodwaters as they rise.”
Emily gave James a look and said, “Just be careful, don’t give him any ammunition against you.
After all, the CEO is in charge of this company; Douglas can’t make too much of a wave.”
At that moment, Sarah stood up and leaned over, saying, “James, it’s my fault, I caused you to offend him.”
James turned to Sarah, smiled, and said, “That’s just who I am.
Even without you, I was bound to clash with him.
I can’t stand people like him.”
Then Andrew joined in and said, “You don’t need to blame yourselves.
Right now, we should think of ways to deal with Douglas and how he might target James.”
Emily nodded emphatically, “Right, that’s the priority.
As long as we’re prepared and not fall for his tricks, he can’t do anything to James.”
“That guy always uses our cars, maybe we can get some words out of him next time,” said Ryan Easton, joining the conversation.
William Clark also chimed in, “Right, he’s just an assistant manager constantly throwing his weight around.
Just looking at him annoys me, and he’s pretty fond of bragging too.
A couple of nice words might just get him to spill the beans.
Later, Ryan and I will tip James off.”
James Brown had always heard that these white-collar workers in the office loved to engage in incessant power struggles, especially those within the same office, presenting a facade of harmony while harboring ill will.
But now it seemed that at least these colleagues were pretty decent, laughing as he said, “With you guys helping me like this, regardless of what happens, I’ll remember your kindness.
When I get my paycheck, I’ll treat everyone to drinks.”
With James’ promise, everyone was even more enthusiastic.
It wasn’t so much about the meal that James would treat them to, but the fact that everyone simply couldn’t stand Douglas Smith.
Sarah Utah, such a beautiful girl, was everyone’s darling.
Even if they couldn’t get involved with her, out of a man’s pride, who would want her to fall into the hands of a bastard like Douglas Smith?
So now, it was a united front against Douglas Smith.
In the morning, James Brown and Sarah Utah went to buy two more laptops for the Accounting Department to replace old ones.
By the time they had set up the computers, it was past lunchtime.
They grabbed a quick bite before heading back to the company.
As soon as they returned to the company, a young guy from the Finance Department came to the Logistics Department to get the computers.
Sarah Utah had always been in charge of issuing office supplies, and many people in the company used it as an excuse to chat with Sarah.
After the guy came in, he didn’t leave right away but started a casual conversation with Sarah Utah.
Sarah responded with a smile.
She was a good-natured girl, easy to get along with as long as people didn’t physically harass her or make inappropriate jokes.
While they were talking, Douglas Smith walked in and went straight to James, saying, “I hear the company has brought in two new computers?”
The office suddenly fell silent.
Douglas Smith coming to find James was clearly targeting him, and it was unclear what Douglas Smith was up to asking about the computers.
James replied with a light smile, “Yes, the Accounting Department placed the order, and we have received them.”
Douglas Smith’s face turned stern as he said, “Then hold onto them; I’ve already promised one to Mr.
Davis from the Sales Department.”
Sarah immediately expressed her shock, “Douglas, the Accounting Department made a direct order and the CEO even signed off on it.
We have no reason to withhold it from them.”
Douglas Smith glared and snapped, “Am I not your superior?
Does what I say not count?”
Sarah was at a loss for words, but James calmly said, “Douglas, what you’re saying is true, but there is an order from the CEO.
If we keep the computers and don’t release them, who will be held responsible?”
Douglas Smith snorted, “I’ll cover it later with a new order; they can only have one computer.”
Jessica Wilson quickly made eye signals to James, urging him to agree, but James shook his head and said, “Sorry, Douglas, I’m just following company protocol.
Although you are our leader, this was authorized by the CEO.
If we don’t give the computers to the Accounting Department, and they start asking questions later, we can’t take that responsibility.”
In a rage, Douglas Smith slammed his fist on the table and shouted, “You’re really defying authority now, aren’t you?
I’m a manager, and you—an insignificant employee—won’t listen to me?
Haven’t you learned in this company to obey your superiors?
You are accountable to me, your direct superior.
Are you trying to get fired?”
“You are my leader, but I need to follow the company’s regulations even more.
The regulation states whoever brings the order gets the item.
As the assistant manager of our Logistics Department, don’t you know our rules and regulations?”
James’ tone was always measured, yet at the same time, he directly challenged Douglas Smith, not giving him an inch of face.
“Fine, fine, I’m taking a computer now, and I’d like to see who dares to stop me!” As he spoke, Douglas Smith walked around to the other side and picked up one of the laptops from next to Sarah’s desk.
But as he turned, James blocked his way, his face set like iron.
Douglas Smith said grimly, “Move aside.”
“Put down the computer, and you can leave.”
“James, move!” Jessica Wilson and Andrew Brown both urgently cried out.
Sarah, however, was panic-stricken, unsure of what to do.
She had never faced such a predicament since joining the company and had no idea how to handle it.
James gave a faint smile and said, “Douglas, without an order, I won’t let you take this computer.”
“Move!” Douglas Smith was completely incensed by now.
He had come today to humiliate James, not expecting James to outright disregard him, a deputy general manager.
He couldn’t contain his anger any longer, and with a shout, he shoved his hand towards James’ chest.
However, James’ body shifted in some way, and Douglas Smith’s push missed its mark, his own momentum sending him forward.
Tripping over something, he lost his balance and fell face-first toward the ground.
With a “thud,” the office fell deathly silent…
