The Supreme Soldier in the City -
Chapter 23 - 23 23 Endless
23: Chapter 23: Endless 23: Chapter 23: Endless After a moment of silence, Gina Lopez said, “James Brown, I believe you’re a capable person.
When you return to the company, you can come work at my company.
What job would you like?”
James Brown knew that Gina Lopez was offering him a job because she was afraid he might do something to her.
Sharing a bed with a beautiful woman like Gina Lopez was indeed a test for James Brown, but it was a test he could resist.
In the past, James Brown had undertaken many assignments at the national secret level, which required a lot of training to ensure that if they were ever captured, they would not divulge any secrets.
Training to resist seduction was essential, otherwise, at the mere lure from a beautiful woman, they wouldn’t recognize even their own fathers, let alone qualify as top-notch secret agents.
When it came to beautiful women, he wasn’t completely unaffected, but he always remained vigilant internally.
The kind of mishap where one is blinded by desire absolutely would not happen to James Brown.
Now, even though he was back in the city and starting to lead a normal life again, the training James Brown had received still lived on in his body.
So even if he shared a bed with Gina Lopez, he could restrain himself from doing anything inappropriate.
But since Gina Lopez brought it up, how could she be assured if he didn’t agree with her?
“Boss Lopez, you’re not just saying this to appease me, are you?”
Gina Lopez quickly responded, “I didn’t know much about you before, but based on your performance these past few days, I think you’re truly talented.
If you could unleash more energy in my company, do you really want to be a security guard all your life?”
James Brown immediately said with great excitement, “Of course, I don’t want to be a security guard.
In other people’s eyes, are security guards just inferior citizens?
Look at the people in the office buildings; none of them respect us and order us around.
If I have the chance to be a white-collar, I’d prefer that.
But as you know, I don’t even have an associate degree, can I work as a white-collar in your company?”
“Talent isn’t determined by degrees.
If you’re capable and motivated, then there’s absolutely no problem.”
“Alright, alright, since the boss herself has said so, it’d be foolish of me to refuse.
It’s just…I really don’t know what I can do.”
Gina Lopez thought for a moment, then said, “I think two departments would suit you, Marketing or Logistics.
Marketing is tough but pays more.
Logistics is also busy but doesn’t require going out much.
The choice is yours.”
James Brown didn’t hesitate and said, “Then I’ll go to Logistics.”
Gina Lopez felt somewhat disappointed; she had hoped that James Brown would choose Marketing as it was more challenging.
But now that he opted for Logistics, demonstrating his talents there would be harder.
However, her main concern now was to stabilize James Brown’s situation by making him feel the benefits she offered, thus ensuring he would consider these in his actions.
Gina Lopez had become a boss and had achieved great results with a small subsidiary because she knew how to handle her employees.
If she couldn’t manage her team well, the company would never have succeeded.
People might dare to do anything if they have no hope, but once they have hope and expectations, they start to consider their actions more carefully.
Gina Lopez was using this psychology to now offer James Brown a benefit.
“So, good.
When we return, I’ll arrange for you to join our Logistics department.
What I, Gina Lopez, have promised will be kept, no false words.”
“Thank you, Boss Lopez.
Am I now also considered a white-collar?”
“Of course, you are.
If you want to switch departments later, you can tell me.
Though, I still think Marketing would be the best fit for you.
There you have more opportunities, higher commissions, and better chances for promotion.
However, in Logistics, it might be harder for you to get a raise or promotion.”
James Brown chuckled and said, “Thank you, Boss.
But I still have some self-awareness.
I’ve never been to college and only served as a soldier for a few days.
How could I smoothly handle customer issues?
So, I think Logistics is better for me.”
“Logistics isn’t as easy as you think; it’s also quite demanding.”
“That’s still white-collar work, though, and most importantly, I can handle it.”
“Well then, you can start in Logistics.”
“Thank you, Boss.
Hehe, I’m going to be a white-collar too!” James Brown seemed quite thrilled.
Gina was quite disdainful of James Brown; she believed a man without ambition, who didn’t grasp opportunities and was complacent merely because he became a white-collar worker, had no potential for development.
“Let’s sleep.” After speaking, Gina rolled over, her back facing James Brown.
As for a man easily satisfied with his life, there shouldn’t be much to worry about.
James didn’t know when he fell asleep but was jolted awake by an ice-cold forehead; the single layer of blankets was no longer enough to keep warm.
Despite having an electric heating pad under the bed that made it quite warm, the temperature in the room had dropped significantly—a common occurrence in rural areas where heating was self-managed, causing overnight drops once the fire went out.
Those accustomed to living there were used to it, but for someone accustomed to heated buildings, it was uncomfortable.
James wasn’t bothered by the cold, but the temperature change instinctively woke him.
Just as he was about to fall asleep again, Gina moved closer to him.
By the starlight outside the window, James saw Gina curling up, clearly very cold.
Hesitating for a moment, James pulled over half of his quilt onto Gina’s, leaving himself with only half.
Gina soon felt more comfortable, her body relaxing.
With only half a quilt, James felt a draft but settled with it.
He closed his eyes, and after a while, fell asleep; he had experienced harsher conditions before and the warm electric mat under him only made it easier.
James woke up again, not due to the cold but because of the warmth.
He and Gina were under the same quilt, now both covered with two layers and snuggling up to each other, naturally feeling warmer.
At that moment, Gina was lying on her side facing him, an arm around his back and a leg entwined with his, sleeping soundly.
Despite both being fully clothed, holding such a beautiful woman made James’s mouth go dry, and he swallowed hard.
However, confronting the formidable Boss Lopez if anything improper happened was something he decidedly wanted to avoid.
Moreover, he could tell Gina was not a woman to take lightly; getting involved would only bring complications.
Though he aspired to live typically, the notion of being tied down by a woman wasn’t appealing, especially not someone as compelling yet untouchable as Gina.
So, taking a deep breath, he calmed his restless heart and closed his eyes, drifting back into sleep.
When he woke up again, it was due to Gina’s cold gaze.
James didn’t immediately open his eyes but rather assessed the situation, internally groaning at his predicament.
At that moment, Gina was lying on her back, only turning her face towards him while his hand happened to stretch under her neck, with the other arm around her shoulders and his leg firmly against hers.
It was no wonder Gina hadn’t left the bed even though she had awakened first—she was watching him.
The most critical issue being his hand extended under her collar; though it hadn’t touched anything inappropriate, it was certainly too close for comfort.
With her arms and legs pinned by him, she wasn’t just unable to get out of bed; she couldn’t even push him away, hence the murderous look in her eyes.
Contemplating how to explain their situation, James still feigned deep sleep.
After two minutes, he slightly moved and then slowly opened his eyes, his expression changing from vacant to panicked upon meeting Gina’s gaze, as if stung by a scorpion, he clumsily unraveled himself and said, “Boss, I…
I…
How did I end up under the same quilt as you?”
Gina didn’t respond, just kept staring intently at him.
James quickly sat up, still meeting her gaze, and stuttered, “Boss, I really didn’t do it on purpose, I woke up once in the middle of the night…
saw you were cold, so I covered you with half my quilt…
Look, it’s just like this.
But I don’t know how it turned out this way later…
Boss, I really didn’t do it deliberately.”
Gina glanced at the quilt on her body, indeed, it was James’s blanket covering half of her side, making his account plausible.
“Boss, can I still come to your company?” James asked cautiously.
Gina fully believed James then, a minor character so concerned about his job wouldn’t dare assault her in the night; besides, from the condition of her body, she wasn’t violated.
However, the fact that she’d ended up under the same quilt with James, and that his hand had been inside her garment, still infuriated her.
With a “hmph,” Gina said, “When I, Gina Lopez, promise something, I never fail to deliver it.”
“Thank you, Boss.
Thank you so much.
You truly are magnanimous,” James responded gratefully, yet internally, he deeply regretted the entire ordeal.
