Chapter 49: Chapter 49 Betting
Ma Juan first led Chen Bin to buy some barbecue, then picked up two cases of beer.
This startled Chen Bin.
"Shouldn’t we buy less? It’s too much; we might not finish it."
"Don’t worry, better safe than sorry!"
Without delay, the two headed to Ma Juan’s rental apartment.
The apartment wasn’t very big, but having two bedrooms and a living room was quite nice for a single woman.
As soon as Chen Bin started opening the barbecue bag, Ma Juan had already begun drinking.
She downed a bottle of beer without even pausing for breath.
Chen Bin didn’t dare speak and hurriedly grabbed his chopsticks to eat.
After all, having some food in the stomach makes drinking less uncomfortable.
Slamming the empty beer bottle onto the table, Ma Juan said boldly,
"Drinking like this is boring. How about we make a bet? One case of beer each—whoever gets drunk first loses. How about it?"
Chen Bin shook his head at the idea.
He could only handle nine bottles; there was no way he could finish a whole case.
Seeing his hesitation, Ma Juan smiled and added,
"I’ll raise the stakes for you. Whoever loses has to comply with any condition the winner names. How about it? Do you dare?"
Knowing he couldn’t outdrink her, Chen Bin pretended and said,
"Alright, if I win, I’ll ask you to sleep with me. Dare you agree?"
The comment made Ma Juan’s face instantly flush red.
But she still masked her reaction and replied nonchalantly, "Of course. We Ma family always keep our word. If you can outdrink me, I’ll let you sleep with me!"
With that, she cracked open another bottle of beer and chugged it all.
Chen Bin, however, didn’t rush and slowly sipped from his cup instead.
Meanwhile, he kept chatting casually with Ma Juan.
"I upset your dad earlier today. Do you think it’ll affect you?"
Wiping the beer off the corner of her mouth, Ma Juan nonchalantly shook her head.
"Don’t worry about that. I’m the Ma family’s only daughter; he won’t get mad at me. What happened earlier with you was purely an accident."
"I see. As long as it doesn’t harm the relationship between you and your dad."
Nodding, Ma Juan opened another beer and took a determined swig.
"The truth is, over the years, my family’s been deceived by too many people pretending to have recipes. If my dad knew you were Secretary of the County Committee’s aide, he’d never have thrown you out like that."
"Isn’t a secretary just a secretary? Could they really carry that much clout?"
"Of course! In our small village, the biggest official we ever see is the village chief. People like the Secretary of the County Committee—we’d only see them on TV."
Chen Bin nodded in agreement, thinking her words made sense.
Ma Juan continued, "My grandfather hopes my cousin can become an official. It’s all about bringing glory to the family. But unfortunately, he couldn’t even pass high school exams. The idea of him becoming an official is now out of reach."
Faced with the topic, Chen Bin didn’t know how to console her and simply said casually,
"No worries. Being an official is about serving the people anyway. There’s no rank of nobility between professions."
"Tch!"
Rolling her eyes at Chen Bin, Ma Juan looked rather dismissive.
"You’re just saying that because it doesn’t affect your gut—anyway, I’m definitely marrying an official someday."
"You’re so beautiful; you’ll definitely get what you wish for."
"You think I’m beautiful? I’ll remember that and tell your girlfriend later."
With a playful smirk, Chen Bin looked at Ma Juan with amusement.
"Sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t have a girlfriend."
This statement seemed to reinvigorate Ma Juan as she leaned forward across the table.
"After graduating high school, I haven’t found anyone suitable either, so maybe we could..."
Before she could finish, Chen Bin interrupted,
"Sure, I have a lot of unmarried colleagues. I can introduce you to one."
"Pfft! I don’t need your help!"
Muttering under her breath, Ma Juan glanced at the beer crates on the floor.
"I’ve had ten bottles already, and you haven’t even finished four. If you lose, I’m gonna make sure to take my time settling things with you."
With that, she raised the remaining half bottle in her hand and emptied it in one go.
Finally, she fixed her gaze on Chen Bin, openly challenging him.
Watching her, Chen Bin started to panic.
He had only been joking earlier, but now Ma Juan seemed to genuinely mean it.
If he couldn’t outdrink her and she made some outrageous demand afterward, he’d be in serious trouble.
Thinking quickly, Chen Bin spoke up,
"Beer just bloats the stomach. Do you have any baijiu here?"
Ma Juan frowned and looked skeptical.
"You’re not trying to cheat because you can’t keep up, are you?"
"Not at all! Baijiu doesn’t count for the match; we’ll still determine the winner by beer."
"Well... alright, but I don’t have any baijiu at home."
"No problem. I’ll go grab some!"
With that, Chen Bin jumped to his feet.
He knew the fastest way to get someone drunk was mixing drinks. If he could get Ma Juan drunk, the number of beers drunk wouldn’t matter.
To make sure, he bought not only baijiu but also two bottles of yogurt.
Back at Ma Juan’s house, he mixed the yogurt and baijiu in a cup.
"Here, try the taste of this."
"Tch, this is child’s play for me!"
Though she sounded dismissive, Ma Juan still downed the cup Chen Bin handed her.
The night continued with drinks and conversation.
Every time the mood lightened, Chen Bin would pour more of the yogurt-mixed baijiu for Ma Juan.
Before long, she had emptied the entire bottle of baijiu.
Chen Bin noticed she still showed no signs of intoxication. Growing increasingly anxious, he kept reminding her to drink more beer.
Finally, when Ma Juan was about to finish her last beer, she drunkenly slumped onto the table, falling asleep.
"You’ll catch a cold sleeping here. Wake up!"
Chen Bin shook Ma Juan, but she kept her eyes shut, showing no intention of waking.
He used the opportunity to slip off to the bathroom and poured all the beer in his own bottles into the toilet.
Returning, he sighed in relief.
"Ma Juan, are you okay?"
Chen Bin lifted the drunken Ma Juan, carrying her to the master bedroom.
While her figure appeared voluptuous, she wasn’t heavy at all.
In his arms, she felt warm, soft, and comfortable.
Her ample chest, slender long legs, and slim waist made her almost flawless—if not for her skin, which wasn’t as fair as Zhao Xinmei’s.
Looking at the sleeping beauty in his arms, Chen Bin’s breathing grew faster.
Faced with such a sight, it was hard for any man not to be moved.
Placing Ma Juan on the bed, Chen Bin was about to leave when she grabbed his arm from behind.
"Don’t... don’t go! I’m scared..."
Turning back, Chen Bin saw a stark contrast to the feisty woman he’d first met.
Tears welled in Ma Juan’s eyes, making her look incredibly fragile.
The sight deeply moved Chen Bin.
He suspected her fieriness might just be a facade, a defense for her delicate heart.
Under ordinary circumstances, Chen Bin knew he should offer words of comfort.
But being held so tightly by Ma Juan, and glancing at the full curves of her White Jade Peaks, his mind began to wander...
