Chapter 380: Curse Charmer, Mother Of Monsters, & Fumetsu

“What do I do now?” Lyra asked her baby brother, hiding behind him as she nervously glanced at her innate curse tool lying on the floor, trying to sense the Rust Worm Spirit.

Rust Worms were already one of the stealthiest Curseling species, and now, as a curse spirit, it was even smarter. Still, since she had created it, Lyra hoped she might have some kind of authority over it or at least a connection. But to her dismay, there was nothing. Despite Ace telling her that the spirit was currently trying to latch onto her innate curse tool to devour it, she couldn’t sense a thing.

Ultimately, she had to admit that her baby brother might be right. These curse entities only understood hunger and fear. Expecting anything more from them was foolish.

“Although the curse spirit your innate curse tool gave birth to shows no loyalty to you, it seems they’re incapable of harming you. Or at least, this Rust Worm Spirit isn’t, even though it clearly wants to,” Ace said, thinking aloud. “We’ll need to experiment further with different curse cores and curse tools to draw a solid conclusion. Based on what we learn, I’ll help you develop a curse art that lets you control the curse spirits and curse tool spirits, your Vyasa’s Womb gives birth to—”

“Wait, there are methods for me to control these spirits?” Lyra interrupted, eyes wide with renewed hope.

“Yes. There’s an entire curse profession based on that—they’re called Curse Charmers,” Ace explained. “We just need to find a curse-charming method that suits your innate curse tool’s abilities. Pretty soon, you’ll be known in both worlds as the Mother of Monsters—M.O.M.—the best Curse Charmer around.” He smirked, teasing his sister for naively thinking she was the literal mother of the curse spirits or curse tool spirits birthed by her Vyasa’s Womb.

Meanwhile, DD killed the Rust Worm, causing its curse core to roll out onto the floor beside Vyasa’s Womb, seemingly from thin air. Soon, Ace extended his fist toward Lyra and slowly opened it to reveal a fat dung beetle that Emi had just fetched from her uncle’s barn. He handed it to Lyra and said, “Here. The bug you asked for.”

“Just hold your hand like that. I’ll use my innate curse on the bug,” Lyra instructed as she retrieved her innate curse tool with a thought after seeing the core of the rust worm spirit and got ready to demonstrate her innate curse art on the dung beetle in her baby brother’s palm. Engrosed in exploring her curse abilities and their possiblities, Lyra had overlooked Ace’s remarks and mockery.

Ace watched closely as Lyra tapped her index finger—bearing a tiny version of her innate curse tattoo at the tip—onto the beetle’s hard shell. To his surprise, the tattoo transferred onto the shell and began to glow. After being bathed in the glow for a few seconds, the dung beetle suddenly took flight and hovered before Lyra, buzzing with an unnaturally familiar curse energy signature.

Yes—the dung beetle, a mere insect, was now oozing curse energy after whatever Lyra had done to it. It didn’t take long for Ace to realize that the beetle’s curse energy signature closely resembled Lyra’s own. Or rather, a mere bug, not only possessed curse energy, but its signature was similar to his sister’s curse energy signature. The beetle had somehow adopted her signature. He had no idea what her innate curse art was, but whatever it was, it was already starting to scare him.

Before he could ask what was going on, the dung beetle suddenly began performing a tiny air show, zigzagging and twirling in the air in a way that left Ace dumbfounded. Then, to Ace’s surprise, it flew over to the Rust Worm Spirit’s curse core lying on the floor, picked it up with ease, and carried it over to him.

Considering what a normal dung beetle could do, this was still impressive—but not unexpected from one that could now harness curse energy. Pocketing the curse core the beetle had delivered, Ace asked, “So… what exactly is happening here?”

“I cursed the dung beetle with my innate curse art—Myriad Cursed Incarnations—and turned it into my very first cursed incarnation,” Lyra explained to her baby brother. “I can share memories and thoughts with it. And because it’s such a tiny, insentient creature, the curse energy spent to transform and use it is practically negligible.

“But the best part is, they’re absolutely loyal to me—even though they’re capable of independent thought and learning. This doesn’t just apply to the beetle, but to any creature I turn into a cursed incarnation.

“Lastly, want to see something amazing? Wola!”

With that, the dung beetle landed on her wrist and transformed into a tattoo, nestling itself neatly on her skin.

Ace’s eyes widened in shock. Lyra grinned excitedly and added, “Not only are they loyal, they’re ridiculously handy. What do you think?”

“Sis, you’re just as lucky as I am when it comes to awakening your curse abilities,” Ace replied, impressed. “Your innate curse art is the perfect counter to the limitations of your innate curse tool. Why not just use your curse tattoo on the curse core or curse tool before feeding them to Vyasa’s Womb? That way, the curse spirits and curse tool spirits that are birth by it will be your cursed incarnations. Sure, they won’t be your ‘curse children’ like you’d prefer, but you might not need as much curse energy to create powerful cursed incarnations that way.”

Lyra blinked, stunned she hadn’t thought of that herself—until she realized why. As Ace had pointed out, she’d been too focused on proving that the curse spirits and curse tool spirits birthed by her innate curse tool were her children to even consider the potential of innate curse art.

She also realized that by comparing her innate curse tool’s ability to Sage Vyasa’s boon to Queen Gandhari, she had unknowingly limited the possibilities of her tool to that of the myth. It wasn’t that she was being shortsighted—it was just that her comic artist brain couldn’t help but unnecessarily romanticize her curse abilities.

“Ace, you might be right. Let’s try it out,” Lyra said, summoning Vyasa’s Womb and extending her arm toward Ace for a curse core.

“This time, let’s use a curse tool,” Ace suggested, pulling out one of the Wakizashi curse tools Emi had crafted. He handed it to his sister, saying, “Use this.”

“Does it not have a sheath? What’s it called?” Lyra asked, examining the Wakizashi with its unusually dull blade. At first glance, she would’ve mistaken it for a prop—if not for its cold metallic touch and perfectly balanced weight.

“No. It’s called Fumetsu, as in ‘indestructible.’ It has an unconventionally dull blade because it’s not meant to be a primary weapon. It’s designed as a secondary tool to withstand and block even the strongest attacks its wielder might face,” Ace explained, repeating what Emi had once told him.

“Fumetsu… a fitting name,” Lyra nodded, admiring the Wakizashi curse tool a little longer. It was beautifully forged, though clearly not something what Emi wanted, Ace hoped it would serve his sister well.
