Chapter 254: The Frost Dragon (1)
"Reverse!"
The command didn’t stop the transformation. His muscles grew and ripped his skin apart. The pain only served to fuel the burning anger in his heart. His natural abilities to regenerate seemed to have reached a new high. A new skin grew, bigger and more leather-like. Fur covered the new skin.
Unlike the patches of white, smooth fur, his body was filled with blood-red, needle-like fur.
Hex towered at a height of four meters. And that was when he was on all fours. His black eyes turned a shade darker as if devouring the night itself.
Hex roared. The roar blew the wind away and parted the snow. In this desolate land, filled with ruin and death, the roar echoed between the earth and sky.
Anger and despair filled his otherwise blank mind. There was no reason left in him. Only the roar echoed. A roar urging him to rage. A roar urging him to attack. A roar urging him to devour.
So, he charged. The royals were up in the air. The distance in space and strength stood in his way. But he didn’t care. He just desired to kill.
"Whip!"
...
It took effort for the King to even open his mouth. Even at his stage, controlling Time and Space required immense focus and strength. The beam of light with his firstborn within flickered. It would be easier to have him here, physically. But only the united force of the two largest monoliths in the Kingdom could help transfer the Fate and bear the brunt of the backlash thereafter. He sensed his power draining, his flesh withering, and his soul depleting.
Whether he would survive or not wasn’t clear. It was a gamble he took. He didn’t like gambling but he didn’t have a choice. But it wasn’t too bad. His bet might pay off. He was nearly there. His Queen sacrificed everything, too, for a sliver of luck for him to save his royal heritage.
But two anomalies appeared. And that worried him. He had to go all out to ensure they wouldn’t be a variable that caused their plans to fail.
The wind and cold turned into a whip under his command. It struck the massive beast, sending it tumbling over the ground. The force behind the whip left a deep gash in the bestial body. Blood splattered. Part of his organs could be seen. But his regenerative abilities kicked. The wound closed.
Despite the injury, he got back on all fours. He roared. In pain. But even more in fury. His mind buzzed with the desire to kill. Every cell in his massive body seethed with hatred.
"Slide."
The King almost whispered. His throat almost clenched shut. Weakness filled his body.
"Dear –," the Queen looked worried. Her prophecy pushed her family to all this. She couldn’t help but hope they would succeed. At the same time, seeing her husband, the mighty King, in such a deplorable state pained her heart. But the King glanced at her, stopping her from saying more.
Never - the King lived for a century - had he experienced such a lack of strength before. But even weakened, his commands were Law. And a mere town rat like Hex wasn’t above the Law.
Hex slid over the smooth surface that appeared beneath his paws out of nowhere. He stumbled and lost his footing. He tried it a few times. But he failed. It infuriated him even more. He roared and slammed the ground beneath him. Scratches, first minute then increasing in size, appeared. With immense power, he managed to stand and run.
The distance between the King and Hex decreased. So did the distance between the beam of golden light and the space in which the Crown Prince stood. A sense of unease filled Hex. In his state of fury and despair, he forgot the significance of it. But his bestial instinct kicked in. He didn’t think. He just knew he had to reach them before the light reached the pocket of space.
"Spike."
Hex was about to jump when thick, sharp spikes shot out of the ground, impaling him. He roared. The agony of having his body filled with holes nearly made him slump on the ground. But he roared. He couldn’t give up. He knew. His instinct drove him insane. He had to reach the beam before it reached them.
It would be easy to stop. If he just remained still. All he had to do was lay down. What could be easier than that? But Hex roared. There was no thought. Only instinct. And that instinct helped gather all the energy in his massive body toward the paws. He slammed down on a spike. It cracked. He slammed again. The spike broke. With one spike broken, he gained more room to move. He slammed and trashed his body. More gashes appeared. His pointy fur shattered against the spike. But the deep cuts in the spikes it left, eased breaking them.
The beam of golden light was inches away. Hex roared and by instinct gathered all the energy in his hindlegs. He stood, towering twice at his size, and kicked off.
The ground shattered under his power. He pierced like an arrow through the air, reaching the King and the others in a fraction of a second.
Kill. Devour. Destroy.
The thoughts hummed and buzzed. Hex stood face to face with the King. All the energy in his body gathered at the same moment.
The King watched Hex appear. He frowned. It seemed impossible. An ant-like existence threatened to undo his years of work and sacrifices. In his weakened state, even an ant could force him to choose. Choose between his survival and his legacy, his son. He hated to be forced. But he chose. It wasn’t hard at all.
"Shrink!"
Hex barreled his punch. The Queen smiled. The King grinned. Neither stopped him. His instincts screamed. Something was amiss. By instinct, he glanced at the beam of golden light. It stood a hairwidth away from the pocket of space. The distance of a few inches had shrunk.
Hex punched. He couldn’t stop it. He didn’t know how to and why. His thoughts were blank. But his instincts screamed things were over. The King had won. Hex smashed. The King and Queen joined to each other, hit the ground.
The light touched the space. And then...everything froze.
The smile on all three royals disappeared. Shock appeared. They stared at the beam of light. At the pocket of space. And at the massive figure above all. Its blue-white eyes glowed like two miniature moons in the night sky. Its massive wings flapped in the wind, albeit unsteadily.
The Frost Dragon had arrived.
