Chapter 233: The other teams (4)

"What...what is all this?"

Solos stared at the sky above the Temple district. He recognized some of the phantoms up in the air, clashing wildly against each other. The shockwaves of their battle spread far and wide. Solos stood miles away yet felt the turbulent air blow in his face.

Ericka and Edward stood behind him. Although they didn’t speak, their wide eyes and open mouths indicated they shared his apprehension. Edward trembled. As an average man, he never experienced something so fascinating yet horrifying. He stood rooted in place. Fear clouded his mind.

Whoosh.

Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he noticed a loose tile break free from a roof and fly toward them. Solos and the boy beside him faced away from them. Ericka was so transfixed she didn’t notice the tile. It happened in a second. But that was all Edward needed. He blocked the tile with his body. He grimaced as the sharp edge cut in his back.

"What’s wrong?" Ericka asked. She didn’t see what happened. She only saw Edward move to her side.

"N-Nothing." Edward shook his head hurriedly. He moved back to his position behind Ericka. The cold night wind caused a biting feeling on his back. But the average man stood still.

Fascinating.

He winced when he heard the voice in his head. No matter how many times it occurred, he couldn’t get used to it. He peeked at the boy. His handsome features shone like a bright star in the dark night.

"Huh?" Solos uttered. "What is fascinating my lord?"

The way Fate moves. The way Fate acts. It won’t be long before things will reach the point they are meant to reach.

"And is that a good thing?" Solos didn’t understand what the Divine Lord spoke of. But he didn’t get half of the things spoken about. So, he focused on the most important thing.

Yes and no. Yes, we might harvest the reward of our efforts. No, because both players of the game will be here. It never happened before.

"Who? And what game?"

Solos stared confused at the handsome boy beside him. To others, he was his son. To him, he was the Lord.

He didn’t receive any reply.

...

Elsa moved quickly through the abandoned buildings and alleys. Unlike the others, she entered the Temple district through the market district. She didn’t drop her caution. But to her surprise, she didn’t notice any creature above the Fiend stage.

"I didn’t expect the creatures to be under their control," Elsa muttered under her breath. She ducked behind broken walls to protect herself from being swept up by the billowing winds.

She eyed the phantoms in the sky and scowled. There was a time when no one dared to move in the sky. It was her territory.

"Soon, I will forego this weak human body. Let’s see how you guys feel then."

She almost laughed but had to duck hurriedly. A broken tile swept past her. It crashed behind her, taking a pillar with it. Seeing the destruction, Elsa took a relieved breath. She moved. Quicker and quieter.

...

"The wall?!"

Hex mumbled slackjawed at the gaping hole in the wall. Actually, it wasn’t a hole. It was a gap. The wall wasn’t there anymore.

Not so long ago he scaled the walls. He had seen them up close. Unless the walls to the south differed from the ones he climbed one, he couldn’t see how someone tore open the wall.

But it was done. And humans had done so. A group of humans still stood at the opening. They held the watch at the opening. Hex saw the corpse of a creature laying scattered around. Some of the guards were cutting it open.

’A Calamity?!’ Hex sucked a cold breath of air. He couldn’t be mistaken. The shape and the almost-human form were proof that the creature had been a Calamity.

’Do I steal the crystal or first trace their leaders?’ Hex didn’t doubt for a second that the leaders already left. The trail and his sensed both pushed him to follow the trail left behind by the leaders.

’Two Refined Knights and five Knights.’

They were already more than a block away but Hex’s senses were sharp enough to pick their stages. They weren’t subtle about it either. Hex suspected they tried to dominate over other creatures to make their trip faster and safer.

After contemplating his two options, his eyes lit up. ’Who says I need to choose.’

With a grin he jumped down the building. He didn’t see anyone whose stage he couldn’t gauge. The guards were low-level Knights with a similar equipment in their hands as Hex was gifted by Sterling. Theirs was cruder and as it seemed, heavier.

’The Union? Or the Serpents?’

It could be some other party but those were Hex’s first suspects. He closed in on the Knights. Those poor men only realized his presence when he was within striking distance.

Hex didn’t hold back. He punched, hitting the first Knight in the chin. Hex was far too powerful compared to an average Knight. The fist connected and the light in the Knight’s eyes dimmed. He slumped to the ground.

The others reacted but it was too late. Hex used his nimble steps to circle around the others and hit them in placed it hurt. He struck chins, napes, and necks. A few managed to groan but almost everyone slumped to the ground silently.

"Thanks for the crystal."

The people harvesting the crystal nearly finished their task. Hex used his sword to cut the final pieces loose and pocketed the shiny and vibrant crystal. It belonged to a Calamity. A Calamity laying in pieces.

Hex quickly followed the trail of the others. When he found the group, he looked stunned. Seeing Ella and Elron work together worried him. But he threw the thought to the back of his mind.

The group entered a giant building. He confessed he didn’t much about the building but he sensed quite a bit of magic beckoning him.

After the last person entered the inn, Hex followed through. The plaque on the front read the Governor’s office.
