Chapter 230: The other teams (1)

The Duke’s arrival shocked Hex a lot.

’I thought he supported the royals. Or did he change his mind?’The Duke’s desired Grindeston. And Hex would never give up on the town without a fight. This made them enemies even without confronting each other.

’Come to think of it, he didn’t obstruct or ambush me. He might still be after the town but he might disdain using underhanded methods.’

Hex sensed more people dropping from the sky. He looked up and saw a group slide down the ropes hanging from the sides of the construct.

At the same time, the underlings of the royals had recovered from their shock. The High Oracle looked livid."Tauriel! How do you dare attack the King?! Have you forgotten it was His Majesty who increased your noble rank?"Her hysterical screams turned shrill toward the end.

Despite the lack of elements, her eyes seemed to be ablaze like the Duke’s."Greta, does it annoy you to see me here? You didn’t see me in your visions?" The Duke wasn’t screaming or shouting. But his deep beast-like growls reverberated through the entire district. Despite the look of fury on his face, he seemed to be...enjoying himself.

’He looks pleased with himself,’ Hex shook his head wryly. The district was in chaos. Disasters flooded the place yet the powerhouses seemed more focused on their grudges.

The people sliding finally arrived. They landed not far from Hex."Yo. How did you like our newest product?" Sterling waved happily at Hex. His reaction put a scowl on Hex’s face.

’Don’t act like we are friends.’ Sterling wasn’t alone. Quid, the female Knights he had seen in Grindeston, and an old man accompanied him. The old man was old...really old.

Hex could only describe him as a layer of skin wrapped around a skeleton. He wore skintight robes, which just seemed like a second layer of skin above his hide.

’Another powerhouse.’ Hex didn’t sense the energy of the old man nor did he have Fate Strings. Whether he surpassed the Refined Knight stage or was a High Oracle didn’t matter. Both were beyond his ability to face.

"That little calf still likes to rub people’s faces in their failure. He was always like that. He is especially obnoxious when he outdoes someone at something they are proud of."

The old man looked at the Duke and sniggered. No one spoke. They just smiled weakly. No one liked to mock one of the strongest people, especially if that person was on their side.

"Elder," a shout came from above. "My father isn’t petty like that."

Tarquin landed, followed by other people on his team. Hex noticed the absence of Gabriella and Elsa.

"Bah," the old man sneered. "You don’t know your father. He once disguised as a beggar to show a real beggar that he could earn more than him."

Tarquin looked disgruntled but he knew the old man. He didn’t dare to go against him but Hex could tell he wished nothing more than to bash the few teeth left in the elder’s mouth out.

"Another group of Disasters is on their way here," Hex interrupted them loudly. He had to shout.

The three powerhouses on the royal side ganged up against the Commander and the Duke. The large humanoid bull and the Hawk phantom held the edge in the battle. But Hex didn’t see the Gatekeeper or the King yet. And that worried him.

His shout attracted the old man’s attention. Sterling nudged Quid and signaled his team to spread out. Tarquin frowned at Hex but nodded at the men behind him to be ready. The old man, however, studied Hex and then raised a finger at him.

"You. Aren’t you that lad? The Baron’s pupil?"He swagged his bony finger at Hex, getting a frown in return.

The old man didn’t let that deter him from talking as Hex saw the Disasters surround them. "Do you know that the main reason that that cow wants that little patch up in the mountains? Because he is petty. He couldn’t defeat the baron so he wants his place. He thinks by stopping his last wish, he can claim some sort of victory. So petty."

The old man shook his head. He didn’t shout but Hex heard him clearly. The screeches of the Disasters didn’t drown his voice. But it did annoy him.

"Ow shut up, you shrieking bastards." He snapped and swatted his hand. The Disasters lurched at them but something happened.

A thin membrane of water appeared around each creature, engulfing them. They looked floating like water bubbles. The large bubbles didn’t float. They followed the trajectory of the creatures’ jump. But when they landed, the bubbles burst open with a pop. Hex and others who could follow the rapid movements saw with horrified expressions how with each pop the creatures burst into pieces.

"How?!" Hex seldom lost his composure but couldn’t comprehend the sight in front of him. It was the stage or the destructive abilities of the man that left him reeling in shock. It was the lack of response from his senses that terrified him.

’During the battle between the Baron and the Witch, I didn’t know much. But ever since, my senses can pick up the tiniest of fluctuations in the ambiance. Okay, Fate eluded me but even though I can’t sense the High Oracle’s stage, I still sense Fate Strings when she uses her abilities. The same with the phantoms when they appear. But with this man? Nothing. Nothing at all.’

"It seems it’s true the Baron didn’t teach you much, did he?" The old man read Hex’s expression and grinned like a wily old fox. "This isn’t something difficult. Just a basic application of the Laws. The Law of the Water and the Law of Destruction."

"Laws?" Hex muttered incomprehensibly. "Like rules?"

"Like rules," the old man replied. "Once you guys reach my stage, you will gain some Enlightenment too. Now, if you guys excuse me, I need to see my old friend."
