Chapter 216: Schemes behind schemes (6)

The ancient-looking man stood still. To Hex he looked like the beggars he saw in Notrelune. But Hex knew better than to judge by appearances. Especially, since his senses didn’t even register the presence of the man in front of him.

Screech.

The Calamity rushed back to the scene. It was enraged. Never had it faced an enemy who struck it without having the ability to counter.

"Poor creature. Be at peace."

BAM!

The Calamity only reached the gate when out of nowhere a massive object, engulfed in flames, fell on top of it.

The impact caused everyone to stumble. The heat made the people scurry back. Hex too. The power and the abilities of the man shocked him immensely.

When the heat appeared, he tried to control his ice element to protect himself. But he couldn’t. His control over the element was cut off for a moment.

’It’s not a lack of energy or my connection with the ice element. It was more like rules around control and the way elements worked were impacted?’

The thought of his conjecture being correct terrified him. He couldn’t imagine the stage the man was at to accomplish something like that. And how would he fight against someone like this?

’I think I made a mistake by coming here.’

It had been years since Hex experienced such a level of fear and doubt.

...

Briella stood behind the Captain, hesitant about her next move. She knew she would be put through a meticulous investigation. And she knew she would fail. She lacked the mark of the oath on her. The Vice-Captain never noticed because the mark only reveals itself in front of a royal.

But she hadn’t given up. She waited. One chance was all she needed. As soon as the horde broke through, the Captain wouldn’t be in a position to hold her back. She would make a run then and there.

The Disasters were killing the soldiers. The Captain managed to kill one and injure another Heartless but they still faced three more Disasters. The battle also exhausted the Captain. If the other Vice-Captain hadn’t arrived in time to reinforce, the line of control would have been broken through.

From Briella’s point of view, it was only a matter of time before they would have to retreat. She would use that moment to break free and escape. Their plan already failed. She was supposed to enter the Temple as an injured officer.

Now, under the watchful eyes of her former lover, she didn’t have a chance to execute that plan. And at this point, with the Captain involved, even if she got injured, they would first investigate her. After that, she might be brought into the Temple district...as a prisoner.

She watched with anticipation as the Captain and his subordinates were pushed back. Anytime now. Her chance was close. But right then things changed.

Boom!

The ground exploded. Something had struck against it. The impact sent all of them flying. When Briella looked up, she saw the Disasters burning and screeches. The fire destroyed everything near them.

Boom!

Boom!

Hearing similar sounds nearby, she looked up. Spherical objects rained along the entire line of control. As soon as they neared the ground, the spheres burst into flames.

Standing on the roof, she could find only one thing to compare the spheres of fire to.

"Meteors."

...

’Someone arrived earlier than me.’

Elron stood in the middle of an abandoned compound as he stared at the patch of freshly dug mud and grass.

It didn’t surprise him that someone else knew about this place. He gathered the information about this place through Briella. She on her part, snooped for weeks inside the rooms and offices of men, gathering maps and other information.

Their plan was simple. He would create chaos, she would use that as cover to sneak into the Temple district, playing the role of an injured officer.

What surprised him was that someone used the piece of information. As far as he knew, no one in this place needed to do so. Even the most emotional soldier wouldn’t dream of escaping the district. Their title of Starsworn wasn’t for show. They swore an oath, breaking which would ruin the lives of theirs and their loved ones.

Something like this could only be done by someone not part of the Starsworn. Someone like them.

Suddenly, he looked up. The sight of a sphere of mass bursting into flames stunned him for a second.

’This is turning interesting.’

Elron felt amused but his movements were a bit hurried as he entered the narrow tunnel. Even though he felt amused and wished to remain in the ruin to see how things would unfold, he still stuck to the plan.

He was still part of the Divine Lord’s team and there were too many plans in motion. His role in this plan had ended.

’I wonder if I will meet that person on my way to the river.’

...

"Sir Gatekeeper, I-I tried to reason with him but he didn’t listen."

Hex watched from the side the potbellied Vice-Captain grovel before the elder man. But he was ignored completely.

"Herman is still alive," the Gatekeeper said. The potbellied man looked stunned toward the broken building and the man lying before it.

’Herman should be the SS3’s Vice-Captain,’ Hex understood from their gazes. Just then, the old man glanced at him.

"You seem strong. Pick him up. He needs help."

Hex nodded and walked up to the Vice-Captain. The way the man kept them behind him and didn’t cower in the face of a Calamity earned Hex’s respect. He carefully picked the body and put it on his shoulder.

"I need a thorough update by morning. The creatures are drugged. Investigate properly. Tell those slackers at the office too."

Hearing the cold voice of the Gatekeeper, the Vice-Captain shuddered. He kept nodding, even after the Gatekeeper entered the gates.

"Come in."

Hearing his voice, Hex exhaled and followed the others through the gates. He was the last to enter. As soon as passed the gates, they closed behind him.

Hex stared in the dark. He made it in. But why did he feel like he entered the jaws of a predator?
