Chapter 117: The infant destroyed

Hex’s scream exploded in his inner space. He just called her mother. And now she had burst into light specks.

The sight left him in pain. She saved him by sacrificing herself. No one had ever done that before. But then again, no one had given the warmth she had given.

Now he knew the feeling of having a mother, it was hard to live without one. But he had to.

Buzz.

The monolith trembled, glowing brightly. He felt the power it contained. The amount exceeded multiple Disaster crystals.

’This amount of energy should have pleased Heaven. Does it mean the door is open?’

He exited the inner space, finding himself back in the tower. The warm rays of light fell on his face, healing him further.

The baron held his sword, unleashing thin sword lights with each attack. The Witch evaded him. Hex noticed quickly that she avoided coming in touch with the holy light.

The door hadn’t opened fully yet but when his gaze fell on the gap, he saw the faint silhouette of his mother, the baroness. She smiled warmly at him.

The ache in his heart returned but Hex didn’t let his emotion burst. In one glance, he had noticed the baron’s pitiful appearance.

’If we don’t help him now, he will fall here.’

The very thought of losing the baron tonight pushed Hex. He knew he had to destroy the infant but the Witch never left the area, no matter how fierce the baron attacked.

’But how can I help?’

He looked around. Only the bodies of Wallen and Silvera lay around. Hex didn’t know how many lives the silver-haired lady had left but it couldn’t be a lot. She had died plenty of times tonight.

Seeing her on the floor triggered an idea in Hex’s head. He ran up to her and placed his hand on her plentiful chest. Red light lit up on the back of his hand.

The experience with the baroness had inspired him. At first, nothing happened, but then the glyph shone brightly.

’It works,’ he cheered. He focused and connected with Silvera’s lingering consciousness. He suppressed his shock seeing it badly damaged.

’This is the pain one has to endure to execute the Nine Lives Technique?’

Even the baroness’ consciousness was less damaged than Silvera’s. It looked like it was torn into pieces.

’Can you hear me?’

He prodded carefully, afraid that a mistake on his part would hurt the already-in-pain woman. She replied with a murmur.

Hex cautiously willed the energy inside him to flow into her. It was arduous and great focus but Hex had plenty of experience with energy control by now.

Thankfully, energy followed the principle of flowing from high concentration to low, unless a pump of sorts was involved.

The energy was dense soul energy, the purest form of energy. It healed Silvera but also filled her up. She suddenly opened her eyes.

"Thank you."

She jumped on her feet, eying Hex curiously all the time. She didn’t know how Hex had done it but now wasn’t the time to investigate. She would do so, later...perhaps.

When they looked up, they saw the baron had already lost an arm. Yet the man continued to fight. The baroness’ sacrifice helped empower and heal to some extent and put constraints on the Witch’s power.

The baroness kept an eye out on Hex. She was the first to become aware of Silvera’s return. The Witch, emboldened by the sight of the baron, tried to end the battle.

Silvera’s early return caught her in shock, causing the silvery chains to easily reach her. The Baroness, being ready, poured all her remaining soul energy into the chains. She even controlled some of the Heavenly light to wrap around them.

"GET THESE THINGS OF ME!"

The Witch’s shriek nearly deafened those who heard. Thankfully, the light pouring out of the Vault acted as a barrier.

She struggled but was unable to remove the chains. The baron finally lowered his sword and turned towards his wife. Hex, who stood in the tower, could see his pain, even from a distance. He felt his insides tear up for him. In one night, he had seen feelings on the face of a man who was known to have none of them.

"It’s time to end this," the baron said, lifting his sword, ready to strike and push the Witch into the Vault, imprisoning her for eternity.

’Do it master.’ Hex was tired and done. He needed rest. The sooner all this was over the better.

"Go ahead," sneered the Witch. Her smirk irritated Hex. "Chain me up. But are you ready to sacrifice all your people?"

Wrapped in the chains, she lifted her chin and pointed it toward the first mountain. It was far from the castle. Hex could barely see the dim lights of torches. But right then, the whole mountain flared up. Thousands of runes appeared on it, chaining it up.

"What the fuck are you doing?" The place was filled with survivors of Grindeston. Hex screamed angrily. Even if they managed to defeat the Witch, without those people, the victory would be meaningless.

"What does it look like I am doing, son? I am just offering a choice. Them or me?" The Witch cackled as she was being pulled toward the Vault. The light wrapped tightly around her but she wasn’t resisting. Instead, she looked smugly at the baron, daring him to make a decision.

The runes on the mountain flared even brighter. The outer parts crumbled. Even from this distance, Hex recognized the soft tremors.

’There is only one way,’ Hex thought, gnashing his teeth. He turned toward the infant. His sudden move attracted the attention of every person in the air.

"Son, if you dare to destroy the divine infant with the Vault open, this whole area will be decimated. Didn’t Mikhael teach you these things?"

The baron hadn’t taught him much. Hex still looked at him, hoping to hear him deny the Witch’s claim. Instead, he nodded.

Hex felt torn. He didn’t wish the people to die but he didn’t wish for the Witch to escape.

Seeing them all stand passive, the Witch cackled loudly.

Srt.

Srt.

Suddenly, she stopped and looked with disbelief toward the infant. Hex knew why. He was looking with the same eyes toward him. Or rather, at the boy that crawled up to him.

"Gorge?!" Hex shouted, recognizing his former neighbor’s kid.

Gorge heard his shout and gave a weak smile. He then sat on his heels and removed his shirt. On his chest, the symbol of the Vault was engraved, out of which blood still trickled down. He lifted his hands, both holding sharp pieces of tiles.

"Stop. Gorge don’t do it!" Hex shouted. "It will destroy everything."

"I know, big brother," Gorge said. "I saw it. The visions. But don’t worry. This time, I will be the one saving you and my old folk. Take care of them, brother."

"I WILL SKIN YOU ALIVE BOY. STOP!"

Gorge ignored the Witch’s shriek. He used one piece of tile to pierce into the infant, while the other he slammed into his.
