Chapter 112: An unyielding will
Chapter 112: An unyielding will
Her black eyes were like the abyss. They seemed capable of sucking his soul away.
The moment he turned, Hex shivered uncontrollably. It was different from when he met the baroness.
"You have grown into a handsome young man," she said. Her voice was melodious yet it prickled Hex’s ears.
’Those words...’
Hex couldn’t help but be wary of her, not because of her identity but her words. They were word for word the same ones the baroness had said.
’Is it a coincidence?’ He wondered.
"Have you already met my sister?" The Witch’s question startled Hex. The jump of his eyebrows didn’t escape the lady before him.
She smiled. Her white teeth caused her already fair complexion to brighten. The contrast between her milky complexion and black eyes was...bewitching.
"My dear son. You will need to control your emotions better or else everyone will read you like a book."
As she walked she stepped forward. Hex wanted to retreat but he lost control of his body. He couldn’t move. His heart beat accelerated seeing the Witch raise her hand and place it on his cheek.
’It’s warm.’
That was his first thought but it made him cold on the inside. He knew he was losing control of himself. Even his thoughts were turning sluggish.
"You already know the truth," the Witch said, looking into his eyes. It wasn’t a question. She knew that he knew. "Yet you remain reluctant to accept me. Why is that?"
Hex saw her looking questioningly at him. Despite posing a question, she didn’t allow Hex to reply. He had no control over his tongue.
"In time you will understand that the things I did were for the greater good of this world. I never thought I would be happy to see my blood and flesh. Yet, now that we have reunited, we, mother and son, will conquer the world. Once the Divine Lord claims the Heaven’s throne, we will be the rulers of the mortal world."
The Witch’s power prevented Hex’s movements to the point he couldn’t even twitch a muscle but the struggle in his mind didn’t seize.
’Come on. Do something. Anything. Don’t allow her to succeed.’
He saw the Witch come closer. Intuitively, he knew if he stopped his mind from struggling, he would turn into her puppet.
’Don’t give up. Hex or not, I am here. I will live. I didn’t give up when the world was against me. I didn’t give up when the baron threw me out. I didn’t give up when the Temple stopped sheltering me.’
In a split second, Hex screamed at himself, thinking about the worst phase of his life. The Witch might be a Sinner or perhaps Taboo; it didn’t compare to the despair he felt when he entered the darkness of the mountains at the age of twelve, all alone, with nothing besides the ominous sounds of creatures around him.
His will to resist made his heart accelerate. The heart thumped wildly against his chest. It was going berserk. It was a heart unwilling to Heaven. How could it allow the Witch to do as it wished?
Just when Hex felt his thoughts become incoherent, a pain unlike anything he felt before, burst out in his chest.
The monolith inside flashed brightly, emitting a burst of blinding energy. The energy was multi-colored yet lacked any color at the same time.
A blubber-like substance came out, driving Hex’s heart into overdrive.
Boom
BOOM
BOOM!
His heart went wild, refining the chaotic energy. Hex felt the energy build up. There was only one exit to let it out. The closest one. His mouth.
The Witch felt something amiss. Her hand paused. But before she could look closer, Hex suddenly opened his mouth.
"FUCK YOU!"
The shout filled the air between heaven and earth. Despite its power, it wasn’t enough to move even a hair on the Witch’s head. But it wasn’t the power that had an effect. It was the suddenness of it.
For a fraction of a second, the Witch stopped. But it was enough. Hex regained control over his faculties.
He wasn’t the only one who took advantage of the pause. Out of nowhere, silvery chains appeared around the Witch, jerking her back. Hex didn’t even wait to see what was happening. He jumped back.
Woosh.
His jump didn’t cover a meter as it usually would. The moment he jumped, the space around him trembled, bringing him tens of meters back. He stood beside Wallen with one jump.
He looked toward the Witch and saw a golden light burst from the sky, reaching her instantly. The baron was back, entangling her.
The power of his attack made the ground tremble. Silvery and golden light flashed around, continuously attacking the Witch.
Hex tried to see where the infant lay. It was still something, no he was someone, they had to destroy. ’Kill actually,’ Hex thought bitterly.
"Young master Hex."
The weak voice beside him, worried Hex. The butler looked weak. Blood seeped out of his mouth and nose. The puppet-like man seemed broken.
"You need to retreat. Run away," Hex said with a sense of urgency. He had no intention of doing so himself. He felt that this was his reality. He had to face it. The Baroness and the Witch were both part of him. If he ran away now he would have to run his whole life. A life like that wasn’t worth living.
"A servant can’t leave his master behind. Besides, you still need the spatial element."
Hex had nearly forgotten about it.
"How do we do it? How do I take you to the baroness?" He asked, unsure how to proceed. He had not brought someone living inside him.
The butler smiled at him and said, "Put your hand with the glyph up."
’Indeed. He asked me that before too,’ Hex remembered the moment before the Witch attacked.
He did as he was told. Wallen lifted his hand and put it on the glyph. His elemental circle lit up. The circle rotated faster and faster.
Hex felt a strange prickling on his hand. After a brief observation, he noticed a mark gradually taking shape inside his Blessing.
’Is...is he transferring it to me?’ Seeing the circle dim, each time a rotation was completed he wondered.
It took seven rotations before the circle on top of Wallen’s hand disappeared. The mark on Hex’s hand shone brightly.
"T-this is magical, Wallen!" Hex said happily. Just like that, he gained an element. He could pass through space now too.
"Wallen?" Hex called, not hearing anything from the butler. He turned towards the butler. The puppet-like man was on the ground, not moving. His expression was the most peaceful Hex had ever seen.
