The Stonehearted Knight -
Chapter 105: A well-timed backstab
Chapter 105: A well-timed backstab
Wallen’s appearance was clearly outside of Elron’s plan. His grin had disappeared. He certainly didn’t expect the butler to be a Refined Knight.
"Drink the Piss," he said to his partner sounding grim. He knew the fight would be brutal.
Seeing Wallen display an element circle, Briella and Althea looked shocked. Hestia knew Wallen was the second strongest person in the castle. The man with a puppet-like expression saved her countless times.
"You knew?" Briella asked Ivran. The old Knight looked relieved from the moment Wallen appeared.
"He saved my life during my first Mission in the mountains," Ivran said without delving into the details.
"If you guys are done, be useful and stop his partner. I will take the grinning idiot. We have little time." Wallen interrupted them as he moved his hands. The circle flashed.
The space around Lira twisted but shattered soon. "As expected. The space there is protected by the infant’s divinity."
Wallen didn’t let the failure of his attempt stop him. He was already on the move. He reached the wooden branches around Elron in a blink. The branches shot out like wooden lances, aimed at his chest. But just when they were about to hit Wallen, a dark blue light appeared above his chest. The branches shot right through the light, coming out behind Wallen. They didn’t even graze him.
Wallen passed through the branches without a scratch. The only one between him and Lira was Elron. But the opponent wasn’t inexperienced. Just as the butler’s attack hit him, Elron set himself on fire. Wallen’s fist hit Elron’s chest, shattering the burning wooden layer. At the same time, the floor beneath them burst open, out of which wooden tree trunks with sharp points shot out.
Wallen had to quickly back away. The trunks burst into flames and then exploded. The smoldering embers flew towards Wallen. Most of them passed through him but some remained stuck on him. He shook it but he couldn’t get them off him.
Elron’s partner was about to down the Piss brew when Ivran disrupted him by running at him with a steel lance. The lance struck the brew out of his hand. The hooded figure landed on his back with a groan.
Althea was just behind Ivran. Right after the hooded figure fell on the floor, she jumped, aiming her spear right through his heart. Seeing the incoming attack, the man cried out from behind his hood as the mark on the back of his hand flared up.
"Shield!"
Ding!
The armored puppet, put against the wall, had sprung to life and interjected the attack. The spear emitted a dragon-like cry and pierced through the puppet but not enough to harm the hooded figure.
The appearance of the puppet surprised Althea but her experience helped her evade the sword aimed at her by the puppet. She sprang back. Briella eyed the small bottle with the brew that had rolled away from the hooded figure.
Rumble.
They suddenly heard tremors and earth-shaking noises coming from above them. They all looked toward the rune on the floor. It was emitting golden vapor as it rotated at tremendous speed.
’It’s almost time.’
The thought appeared in everyone’s mind. Elron and the hooded figure grinned while the others grimaced. Even Wallen, who was stronger than everyone struggled to reach Lira.
Elron had already half his body and was recovering very slowly. But he still was able to obstruct Wallen’s path.
"Guard!"
The hooded figure shouted. All the armor and puppets in the tower sprang to life and hurried in front of the hooded figure. Ivran and Althea continued their attacks, taking out the puppets.
The rumbling from the outside continued.
Briella, using the ongoing battle between the hooded figures and her teammates, hurried toward the bottle with the Piss brew. When the hooded figure saw her, he tried to redirect a few puppets towards her but was stopped by Althea and Hestia. Ivran’s lance pierced through the remaining guards.
Briella picked up the bottle and downed it in one gulp.
"Excellent! Take out the wooden guy!" Hestia exclaimed, not caring whether her opponents heard her. The rumbling on the outside increased. The Heavens was close to unleashing its wrath. That meant the Witch was close to being revived.
The mark on Briella’s hand shone brightly. A circle with the colors of a rainbow appeared on the back of her hand. An illusion wasn’t an element but the visual illusion required a symphony of various colors.
Wallen had kept an eye out on the other battle. When he saw Briella successfully become a Refined Knight, albeit for a period, he decided to go all out. The space around him trembled. He ignored all the woods and branches, passing through them.
The light on Briella’s hand flashed brightly. She was going all out. Suddenly, the branches and woods stopped. Elron remained frozen in place.
"Quick!" Hestia shouted. She felt her heart thump wildly inside her.
The rumbling in the sky intensified.
Wallen bypassed all obstacles. He saw an empty bottle beside Lira. She had also downed her brew, increasing her energy into the circle.
But Wallen had reached her. Finally. The circle on the back of his hand flashed. The space around him twisted. A dagger made of spatial elements appeared in his hand. Without hesitation, he swung the dagger.
Thump.
Lira’s head rolled over the floor, followed by her body falling flat. The rune dissipated. Wallen let out a breath of relief.
"Yes!" Hestia cheered.
RUMBLE!
"What?!" All the colors on Hestia disappeared. She looked shocked. They felt the sky tremble. Wallen turned in shock.
Gradually they saw the image in front of them fade. It was like a smoke screen was lifted. Behind it, Lira sat with her head intact. She looked at them with a smile on her face.
The rune circle was gone. Only an infant lay still.
It had all been an illusion!
Clap! Clap!
Elron clapped his hands enthusiastically. "Well done. I had underestimated you! But you fooled a Refined Knight. It was also thanks to my wonderful acting skills but still. Well done!"
He looked at the female Knight in admiration.
"YOU!" Hestia turned at Briella and shrieked, not able to conceive why she had betrayed them.
The female Knight smiled at her. She then turned towards Althea, who held Ivran, trying to save him. In the illusion, no one had noticed when Briella had stabbed him in the back.
"I hope the Commander finally realizes his warrior princess isn’t undefeatable. If you survive, please tell him his daughter has changed her fate!"
In the middle of talking she had started to back away. Elron and his partner were already at the door. The rumbling had stopped. There was an eerie silence.
The circle on Wallen glowed brightly. Just as the space warped, he looked at the container. The woman inside was looking at him. She was back. That was the last thing he saw.
BOOM!
Lightning struck the tower, splitting the hill in two.
