Chapter 530: Chapter 529: Lick My Shoes Clean

No matter how the police interrogated him, Hong Tai stuck to the same story, never admitting to having fired the gun.

Time ticked away, and before long it was half past eleven.

Seeing the case officers frequently checking their watches, Hong Tai seemed to guess what was going on and carelessly propped up his legs.

"Officer comrade, it’s about time. How many times have you arrested me? When have I not walked away unscathed? Why bother?"

"To be honest, I do understand you guys, working hard every day like oxen and horses, and only earning so little. It must be tough providing for the family, right?"

"How about this, if you ever tire of this line of work, come find me. I can’t promise anything else, but I can guarantee you’ll eat and drink well if you follow me."

Even the experienced arresting officers couldn’t help but feel infuriated by Hong Tai’s arrogance.

Soon, a junior officer came to call the two case officers out.

In the office, the captain, with a cup of tea in one hand and his waist propped by the other, furrowed his brow as he looked at the two officers responsible for interrogating Hong Tai.

"How’s it going?"

The two officers shook their heads dejectedly.

Seeing this, the captain didn’t waste words, "Alright, wrap it up and call it a day."

"So we’re not continuing with Hong Tai’s interrogation?"

The captain tapped his watch, "Time’s up, we have to release him."

"But..."

The captain waved his hand dismissively, "No buts, release him and you guys go home to rest."

The case officers had no choice but to go to the interrogation room and unlock Hong Tai’s handcuffs.

Hong Tai, grinning mischievously, waved his unshackled wrists at the officers, "See, I told you so. It should have been like this from the start, it’s best for you and for me, everybody wins."

One of the officers clenched his fists in anger.

Seeing this, Hong Tai taunted, "Young man, don’t be so hot-tempered. Who are you trying to impress by acting like that? You think you can lay a finger on me?"

The officer was about to raise his fist but was restrained by another older officer.

Seeing their reaction, Hong Tai laughed even more smugly, and after a "dog-eat-dog world" remark, he swaggered out of the interrogation room.

...

The hall of the police station was lined with people squatting like mushrooms on both sides, all of them underlings of Hong Tai and Duan Shaolong.

When they saw Hong Tai emerge from the interrogation room, all of his followers stood up in unison.

"Uncle Tai!"

"Uncle!"

The loudest among them was Tang Jinshui.

He always said so, his uncle’s influence was vast, and he was sure to be alright!

He would be fine too.

Hong Tai walked up to Tang Jinshui and patted him on the shoulder, "Good kid, your uncle hasn’t spoiled you for nothing. You stay put for now, I’ll come to get you in a couple of days."

"Eh, Uncle, I’m glad you’re okay. I can stay for ten days or half a month, no problem."

Tang Jinshui went all out with his flattery, making Hong Tai beam with joy. He promised to hand over the management of a bar as soon as he got out, which tilted Tang Jinshui’s mouth with happiness.

After buttering up Tang Jinshui, Hong Tai reassured his other followers with a few words before leaving.

Tang Jinshui and the other followers all looked on with admiration and respect as Hong Tai departed.

Worthy of being their boss, connected and untouchable, shooting someone in the street and still walking away unscathed.

With a boss like that, how could they not have good days ahead!

But Duan Shaolong’s men weren’t having it, "Fuck, are the cops covering up for a murderer now? Hong shot our boss, why does he get to go home as if nothing happened, while we’re stuck here? Is there no justice left?"

Tang Jinshui jumped to his feet and shot back, "Cry to your mom, why are you rushing to mourn for Duan, huh? When you follow a loser, this is what you get, you deserve it!"

"Motherfucker, come here if you dare, I’ll kill you!"

"You come here, come hit me!"

The clamor and insults nearly lifted the roof off the police station; the officers couldn’t suppress the uproar.

...

Walking out of the police station to the tune of his subordinates trading verbal jabs with Duan Shaolong’s gang, Hong Tai hummed a little tune, feeling exceptionally pleased. As he stepped out of the police station’s front doors, two young men approached him head-on.

The man in the lead was wearing a dark cyan-green short trench coat, with a fair and handsome face and a gentle and scholarly demeanor that marked him as an intellectual.

Hong Tai was illiterate and also looked down on educated people, thinking they were useless, and that real ability was having a strong fist.

He was used to being arrogant, so he just spat a mouthful of phlegm without hesitation.

Smack.

The yellowish spit landed squarely on the back of the trench-coated man’s shoes.

Hong Tai let out a weird laugh of contentment, shook his head, and was about to walk away when the trench-coated man raised his hand to block him.

"You’ve dirtied my shoes," he said.

"So what? If you’re so tough, bite me."

"Lick it clean."

"Huh?"

Hong Tai almost thought he had misheard. "Kid, do you know who I am?"

Yan Yi turned his head to the person behind him and said, "He might not understand human language, give him a hand."

"No problem, I love helping others."

The man walked up with a grin and before Hong Tai could react, a martial arts move sent him tumbling to the ground.

Then, holding Hong Tai’s neck, he rubbed his face back and forth on Yan Yi’s shoe like a rag, until the spit was clean, and then let go.

"There, it’s clean now."

The man got up and returned to Yan Yi’s side with a look that said, "You owe me one for this."

Yan Yi lifted the tip of his shoe to check. "Not bad."

"I’ll fuck your ancestors..."

By this time, Hong Tai had finally come to his senses and leapt up, howling, ready to punch Yan Yi.

The next second, his body flew out like a punching bag, three to four meters away.

Yan Yi turned to look at the man beside him. "Have you lost your touch?"

The man clicked his tongue, "I was holding back. Killing him would be a lot of trouble."

This casual tone, as if they were discussing something trivial.

"Uncle Tai! Fuck your mother, if you’ve got the balls, come in and fight!"

"Police! Hello? Are you going to do something about this assault?"

In the police station, Tang Jinshui and the others, seeing Hong Tai at a disadvantage, began to shout and curse at Yan Yi and his companion.

Meanwhile, Duan Shaolong’s people were laughing with excitement, all the while fanning the flames, "Fight! Keep it going, kill him!"

The police, hearing the commotion, ran out and upon seeing Hong Tai lying on the ground groaning, felt almost thrilled, but still put on a serious face.

"Who are you guys? Why are you fighting?"

There’s a fine line between ’assaulting’ and ’fighting,’ but the implications are quite different.

If the injured party was the instigator, then the one who hit back is acting in self-defense, and are not liable.

Meiqian pointed at Hong Tai, "He insulted my friend, I tried to reason with him, and he tried to hit us. Was I excessive in stopping him?"

Hong Tai was already injured from fighting during the day, and now with Meiqian’s throw and kick, he felt like his insides had shifted places. The pain was so intense that he was twitching and unable to speak.

Yan Yi took out his credentials and handed them to the police officer.

"I am a crime psychology consultant specially appointed by the provincial office, and this is Captain Meiqian from the Provincial Criminal Investigation Corps. We’re here to assist with your case."

After checking the credentials, the officer immediately ran in to call their own captain.

"What case? We didn’t receive any notices."

Yan Yi gave a slight smile, "I’m giving you a verbal notice now, that’s not too late, is it?"

The captain choked a bit, "May I ask which case it is?"

"The Jiahua Hotel violent armed assault and group brawl case."

The captain hesitated, then explained, "That case has already been closed, and we’ve released everyone involved. Look, there he is," pointing at Hong Tai on the ground.

Yan Yi smiled indifferently, "Isn’t he still here? Take him back."

Before the captain could say anything, his subordinates were already in action, picking up Hong Tai and taking him back to the interrogation room.
