Side Chapter Metous 15: Sky

“I know you mentioned that shit earlier about killing, but I think the situation has already gone kablooey.”

“YEah!” Tyell’s body slammed into the wall as jumped out of the way of the gunfire.

The situation went from forty to a hundred real quick.

Tyell and Lila ran for cover as the area lit up with gunfire from various directions. They managed to make it into an alleyway, but their movements were noticed by some, and to ‘prevent the competition’, bullets were fired into the alley. Tyell, despite being very disoriented, Tyell still kept track of where the red-eyed man with the briefcase went.

Lila’s [Lightning Wall] cancelled out the bullets while it was active, so she focused on defending from the other end of the alley.

“Next time, remind me to not listen to your plans…” Lila complained as she shot a bolt of lightning down the street of the degraded town.

“Fuck. It was a good idea at the time.” With a mana rifle in hand that he barely understood how to use, Tyell fired blindly at the thugs that came from the opposite direction. “And if it could still be a good idea?”

“Bloody optimistic bastard, you better not die from this, because I will have your head.”

“Hahah… I would not appreciate that…”

“Do you really have a say in this matter?!”

“I would like to?! It’s my head!” Tyell yelled back.

“Eh.” Lila shrugged, “You can live without it.”

“Like hell, I can!”

The two of them tried to stay on track on where the package was while prioritising their own safety. Mana bullets fired from every direction. Mana guns were the preferred method of combat as they were accurate and the user could perfectly adjust their power, and higher-end weaponry easily produced outputs well beyond the level of a person on a similar level. The only exceptions were the crazy people who reached a level so high with a Vocation and skills that were designed for combat.

Tyell fired his stolen gun, missing most of his shots, but as long as the messy fire kept the people on the other end of the alley at bay, that was good enough for him.

They made a few turns, Tyell in the lead as they turned down different streets and alleys, and Lila handling the much more dangerous behind.

As they moved into a new side street, Tyell got jumped by a large man with a bat, and he got smashed in the stomach, breaking the protection plate he placed in there.

Tyell, only having minimal fighting experience, was left open as his body was pummeled by the follow-up punch to the face. He had gotten into scuffles but was far from skilled enough to be in an up-close physical brawl.

While he kept trying to find a moment to activate his skills to escape. A gauntlet of lightning smashed into the man’s face, breaking them apart and Lila pulled Tyell away as the man blocked the lightning dagger Lila flung into his chest.

“You okay?” Lila asked, trying to assess his wounds.

“Mikey…” Tyell muttered, seeing the person who stood before them. Lila’s blow shattered the man’s helmet, but Tyell also remembered those familiar blows from his ‘training session for the worst cases’.

“Who’s that?” Lila quickly asked.

“Old boss…” Tyell replied.

“Tyell?” Mikey’s reaction was immediate. “Tyell…. Hmm. Looks like you are still in the business after all.” Mikey let out a small cold laugh, “You didn’t sign a contract to stay out of this business after all. I was wondering where you got sent to after being kidnapped from my premises.”

“I wouldn’t call having a support buddy to help quit should be called kidnapping.”

“Don’t kid yourself, no one would be friends with you.” Mikey declared, his cold eyes glancing at Lila who stood nearby. He could still feel the pain from the electricity on his cheek. “Though it looks like you got yourself a new girl already.”

“...” Tyell didn’t reply, he hated what Mikey was insinuating.

“You and little Elly, I guess you two made a nice couple. Shame she got murked during a previous job, well I guess that's why you upgraded.”

Tyell’s fist tightened.

“And quite an upgrade it is… in all departments.”

Lila didn’t take her eye off Mikey during this very quick confrontation but she sensed something with [Danger Close] and–

Bang Bang Bang!

A barrage of bullets shot at their location and she was distracted blocking them from all angles that were targeted at her and Tyell.

“Run away from here! I will deal with them all.” Lila ordered.

Tyell’s leg tensed and Mikey jumped forward, a blood-red aura erupted around his person.

Mikey said, “Nothing personal kid, it’s only business now.”

Tyell did a rapid [Quick Step] to get out of the way but Mikey caught up to him in a moment.

Name: Tyell Stella | Race: [Human]

Level 52 | Awakened

Mana: 87%

Vocation: [Light Highway Runner]

Skills:

- Pockettory

- Quick Step

- Crisis Location Alert

- Retain Stamina

- Quiet Step

- Quick Hide

- I Belong Here

- Pain Reduction

- Hit & Run

- My Highway

- Run Light

Tyell’s skill set focused on one thing moving, specifically running away.

[My Highway] allowed him to run ignoring gravity to an extent, while running on air, walls, etc. [Run Light] was a skill that could only be used when the former was activated and it provided him a massive speed boost while protecting his body and anything he was holding to handle that movement. The requirement to use the skill was for him to be running.

Tyell flung his fist which Mikey blocked and delivered a quick jab in the face back. Using the speed boost provided by [Hit & Run] Tyell tried to distance himself, but Mikey still caught up.

With enough clean hits, Tyell lost his vision for a moment and his head fell down. Mikey swung as a blade of mana appeared and went for the killing blow.

[Crisis Location Alert] screamed in his mind and he jumped out of the way and a bolt of lightning curved towards Mikey.

With the brief window, Tyell managed to create a gap between him and Mikey.

Lila was held up as eight individuals were attacking from all angles, some of which were targeting Tyell as well, but she took it upon herself to block them for Tyell. She knocked and killed three people around, she just needed a few more moments. Her [Pockettory] was given the advantage she needed, but she wanted to drag Tyell away first.

“You were good for one thing, kid, running,” Mikey said, impressed that he dodged that last attack without seeing.

“I…” Tyell groaned as blood dripped from his mouth, “I got to agree with that.” There was finally enough distance for him to sprint.

Before he lost the chance, he had to move.

Clenching his teeth, his legs moved before the rest of his body did as mana flared up and in an instant, his body flashed in a streak of light.

“I–ARH!”

Mikey’s view blinked as the bolt of light grabbed onto him and in a moment he was gone.

Tyell pushed everything he had into the sky and in large steps traversed high into the sky. A bolt of light soared higher and higher before it broke through the clouds.

“No..!” Lila screamed.

Only noticed by a few as everyone was busy with their own life and death conflicts, the beam of light went high into the sky, above the clouds, then in a flash the skills stopped, and floating in the air were two people.

Tyell was holding onto Mikey, but no longer dazed from experiencing this skill many times let go.

“Say hello to the ground for me, Boss!” Tyell kicked Mikey hard causing them to split apart high in the sky.

“Tyell!”

“T-yell?” Tyell laughed as he dived towards the ground. “Why are you yelling yell?!”

He joked as the fear took hold of him,

Oh fuck… Okay, Tyell, all you gotta do is run in the air… easy right?

It has to be…

Name: Tyell Stella | Race: [Human]

Mana: 36%

Running up into the sky had its cost. His mana was low and drained as he pushed the limits of what the skill could do while running purely on air. Then there was his body, still worn from the beating.

With the gravity pulling him and wind pushing his body he painfully tried moving his arms and legs like he was sprinting.

Come on… you can do this…

He continued to fall from the sky and soon he could see the city again. Constantly trying to activate his skills but nothing was coming of it.

…You can do this!

Work!

Come…!

Mum, Dad, Mella, Ceella…

Elly…

Run you idiot!

A wave of mana flared up around him as the skill finally responded

[Run Light]!

His body blinked out of sight as he turned into a streaking flash of light hurtling towards the ground. Making multiple sharp turns the beam of light entered the city and collided into an alley.

Thud! Thud! Thud.

Tyell’s body spun out of the light and crashed into another alley near the edge of town. Ripping his jumper as the remaining parts of his mask fell off. [Run Light] protected his body from deathly harm but he was still majorly hurt, [My Highway] had its limit to ignore the effects of gravity but it was enough that with [Run Light] protection he was able to survive.

“Ergh…” He groaned in pain as he tried to roll over. He didn’t know biology well enough to know what was broken but he knew something was broken.

Thud.

But he couldn’t turn all the way, something was blocking him. He pushed his body in the other direction first then tried to roll over. In pain, he managed to get his head out of the ground to see the sights around him.

What he hit the first time wasn’t a piece of debris or trash, it was the body of a fresh corpse.

An alley littered with bodies with crimson-red liquid dripping from them. It was a makeshift graveyard.

My luck has been rotten for a long time… hasn’t it Elly?

With a gun raised to his head, a man stood five metres away

His cold voice spoke out, “Another child, how quaint.”
