Chapter 49: A Test Of Strength

A deity, something that no one from the human world can understand. Not bound by the natural laws of the world, as they exist outside it, and they have from way beyond its existence.

Some say we were created to entertain them, but in a twist of fate, we have grown to a point above their expectations and are now worthy challengers for their spot.

This was a test, a way to prove their worth and escape the elimination game, and who better to judge than one of these deities?

Or at least that’s how it felt looking at it. Maybe it was because of the thick mist, but its end was unseen, prolonging itself into the sky of the world. Its form changed every few seconds, it made it difficult for the contestants to even start their ascend.

Meanwhile, it was hard for me to make an image from just the screen. Everyone here could sense the tension of the others. Everyone had stopped to watch the game. No one talked, it was too intense to look away.

Some had covered their eyes, while some watched out of respect. But what about me? What was I so interested in that I was watching with such hunger? Well, one was to see how Dusk would do, I wasn’t able to measure his ability while fighting that giant, so I had to this time.

And of course, for a better future. This game held great information, it confirmed to me that there were physical games. I could also take notes on how to beat future games. Being able to watch rather than being there in the bones, gave me more time to process the littlest information and overcomplicate the littlest change the tower makes. It also helped that with my passive, time moved slower.

For example, one thing I noticed was that the system didn’t disallow skill, something many missed, as I have yet to see one in use. Maybe they were scared to try it, or maybe they thought too of an obvious rule, and that’s why the system didn’t specify it.

But if that was the case, it would have caught me using it in the first game. But I guess that’s not too good of a reason to rule out that possibility.

The worst possibility was my plan getting turned upside down. Statistically, there was a higher chance of this happening, but like I said, these games weren’t about luck or anything related to chance. Your ability plays a big part and changes the normal statistics completely.

Truly, only one possibility was to my liking, that Dusk and his teammate won. That’s why I nominated three teams that were either physically or mentally strong because I knew that Dusk would win whatever the game. Though I hope he doesn’t prove me wrong and lose.

Maybe he got intimidated, being face to face with something that could be a deity isn’t something you do every day. So maybe he was nervous?

Who even my even kidding, he wasn’t scared in the slightest. Looking at him I felt no tension, his hands were relaxed as if he had already won, and his forehead was like a desert, with no sign of breaking a sweat.

Truthfully, I couldn’t read him. He hadn’t even attempted to climb the tower. What was he waiting for? Maybe he was waiting for the perfect moment, but what if someone won before that moment?

However, I can’t judge his approach, as it would have probably also been one of my plans to climb the tower. Speaking of it... did its aura feel so familiar?

An onyx tower, that seems endless. One which beyond its windows is the abyss. A towered without any crack. Where have I seen one of these before? Just forget it, others do not have time for that.

I needed to stay concentrated, or else I would lose valuable information.

As I wasn’t paying attention, red sparkles appeared around Dusk. With their power flowing through his body, he jolted up into the air like had become one with them. And in a second, he was at the top.

The silence only grew bigger, as the other nominees were frozen by the sudden outcome. I too had my jaw to the floor. I hadn’t copied this ability, yet it felt too similar to the one I had to be his second skill. And he has only two skills, I’m sure of that, and those are gained after being contracted. Skills aren’t like passives and can be acquired from achievement inside The Core, so this meant... his skill had evolved while I was gone.

’Interesting.’ I smiled while staring at the screen. ’You never cease to surprise me.’ A human brave enough to challenge The Core while maintaining its pride in the place that had gained its nickname from defeating the priest of humanity. The graveyard of pride.

A kid who would serve under me even whenever my ideas seemed mad. Someone whose pride burns like an inferno. And someone who isn’t afraid to risk everything to try to prove his theory, and the first, to try using a skill.

After the other realized what he had done, chaos erupted. If before everyone was frozen by Dusk’s sudden move, now they were motivated.

Some used their skills to help them climb, while others to sabotage the others. My eyes had trouble keeping up with everything, there were skills flying everywhere. I had almost tried dodging one as it flew near where the screen was broadcasting to us.

Thankfully no one saw it, or else I would have died out of emberesment.

Even if Dusk got to the end, he had not won yet. The rules specify that both of the team members have to reach the top for it to count, and sadly for Dusk, his teammate didn’t seem to possess a power that could help him in any way.

But who even was he? They shared a name, so it meant they were family. But where they are related, there could be a possibility of them not being related, and just being forced to be family, it happened a lot when it came to nobility.

And looking at Dusk’s last name, I could tell it belonged to a noble family. I clenched my fist, and I frowned. Let’s just say me and his family go way back.

They were part of the four major families. They were known to produce children made for eliminating memory beasts. Their goal was to defeat The Core entirely, but as I can clearly see, things haven’t gone to plan. Wonder if I play a part in why their plan has turned into an utter disaster.

Also, part of these four families was the Boyle family. Something I had forgotten in my first trial. And one that could have prevented the... surprise at the end.

I was glued to the screen, I felt like I was being absorbed by it, and I couldn’t look away even if I wanted to. Even so, I didn’t want to look away, I wanted to see what this genius would do next. Is he going to just sit on top of a deity until his teammate reaches the end, or will he try something ridiculous? Is he going to get away with trying his idea, or is he going to be punished in the worst way imaginable?

But as I was too focused on Dusk, I failed to notice that some others had reached the end. Only when they came to push Dusk off had they caught my eye.

I expected Dusk to fight back, but imagine my surprise when this madman allowed himself to be thrown off and free-fall from the tower. I groaned out of frustration, was he allowing himself to be eliminated, but why? Just what could he have in plan?

It looked like he didn’t have anything in plan, as he just allowed himself to fall. I felt a tear of sweat drip from my head, as I started at what seemed Dusk’s soon suicidal death. I couldn’t name it any other way, people continued to reach the top, while he was just falling. And he had done it with his own hands, he could have prevented this.

I closed my eyes, as the end seemed near. My plan had failed, and I just couldn’t look. Really, I felt like Anri for a moment, guilt lingering all around me. This was my fault, right? But I was so sure Dusk would be able to win this.

No, I was right. He did win, he only lost because of his useless teammate. He was the one who screwed everything up, this is all because of him!

But why was I so mad about it? Isn’t Dusk... my biggest competition? I should be happy that I got rid of him. So why was I feeling so... mad, so anxious and filthy?

But then, the system whispered something in my ear that I wasn’t expecting.

...

[The elimination round has come to an end. The winners... Dusk and Eclipse Sovereign.]
