Chapter 52: Ch 52: Developing the Skills- Part 2
By the time Zara and Ethan returned from their dungeon run, the scent of dinner filled the air.
Selene had spent the afternoon finalizing her research and had shortlisted a dungeon she wanted to take Orion into.
It had been a little tough to find the next dungeon, but Selene did remember a few ones that could be used at the moment.
She was confident in her choice, and she intended to tell the others about it during dinner.
As they all sat around the table, enjoying the warm meal, Selene cleared her throat and spoke.
"I’ve decided on a dungeon for Orion’s training."
Ethan raised an eyebrow as he took a bite of his food.
"Oh? What kind of dungeon?"
Selene pushed her tablet forward so they could see the details.
"This one has no combat-related activity. There are no monsters, making it relatively safe."
Orion, who had been quietly eating, looked at her with wide eyes.
"A dungeon without monsters? That exists?"
Selene nodded.
"Yes. Some dungeons focus on puzzles, endurance tests, or environmental hazards rather than combat. This one is designed to test problem-solving skills and mental resilience. It should be a good place for you to train without immediate danger."
Ethan hummed in thought before giving her a skeptical look.
"How do you even know about this place? Sometimes, I wonder if you have some power to see the future or not. You know about the apocalypse as well, but you never stated how or why you knew about it."
At his question, Selene tensed up slightly. She hadn’t told them everything about herself—about how she knew certain things that others didn’t.
It wasn’t the time for that yet. She tried to think of a way to deflect, but before she could answer, Zara spoke up.
"That’s not important. We trust Selene. If she wants to keep some things to herself, that’s fine. She’ll tell us when she’s ready."
Zara said, speaking over Ethan. She was on Selene’s side and she made sure Selene did not feel awkward after being asked a question.
Ethan pouted at being cut off, but after a moment, he sighed and nodded.
"Fine, fine. I was just curious. I understand that I should not ask too much."
Selene relaxed slightly and gave Zara a small, grateful smile. Zara winked at her in return.
Ethan’s questioning and interested gaze continued to look at her and Selene knew that these questions were something she would need to answer someday.
But that day was not today.
With no further objections, they finished dinner, and everyone went to rest for the night.
The next morning, Selene and Orion stood at the entrance of the base, ready to leave. Orion looked tense, pacing in small circles as he chewed on his lip.
Selene, on the other hand, was calm.
Orion finally stopped pacing and looked at her.
"How are you not nervous? I feel like I cannot stand still. My insides feel like they are twisting all around!"
Selene glanced at him before shrugging.
"I’ve been inside dungeons before. I got over the nervousness a while ago."
She had become numb to these dungeons a long time ago, but she knew that not everyone was able to desensitise themselves.
Orion hesitated.
\Do you think... I’ll stop feeling nervous soon too?"
Selene considered his question.
"I don’t know. Being nervous is a psychological reaction. Some people get over it quickly, others don’t. I’m not really qualified to say."
She admitted.
Orion frowned, thinking about that. He wanted to ask more, but before he could, he noticed something in the distance.
"Uh... Selene? There are cars coming."
He pointed.
Selene followed his gaze, and the moment she saw the vehicles approaching, her calm expression vanished.
The cars weren’t ordinary—they belonged to the government and the Vale family.
Her stomach dropped.
"Shit!"
She cursed under her breath.
She immediately grabbed Orion’s wrist and pulled him aside.
"We need to hide."
Orion barely had time to react before she dragged him behind a nearby structure. His heart pounded as he crouched beside her, trying to catch his breath.
"W-What’s wrong? Who are they?"
Selene peeked from behind the building, watching as the cars came to a stop near the dungeon’s entrance.
The Vale family.
One of the most powerful families in the country. Ruthless, influential, and always involved in dungeon affairs.
Selene had encountered them before. And she did not want to deal with them again.
"They’re people we don’t want to meet. Stay quiet"
She whispered to Orion.
Orion nodded quickly, his body tense as they watched the car doors open. Several figures stepped out, all wearing sharp, tailored suits.
Among them was a man with dark, slicked-back hair—his presence alone made Selene’s breath hitch.
Damien Ross
A high-ranking member of the family.
Selene gritted her teeth.
’Of all people... why him?’
That man had been incharge of the twin’s early day safety. If he was here, then it was highly likely that the twins were here as well. That was one of the worse news Selene had heard until now.
She could not meet the twins, under any circumstances.
Damien looked around the area, speaking to one of his subordinates. Though Selene couldn’t hear what he was saying, she could tell he was giving orders.
"What do we do?"
Orion whispered.
Selene took a deep breath.
"We wait."
Orion swallowed and nodded.
The two remained hidden, watching as the Vale family members moved toward the dungeon’s entrance.
Selene’s mind raced. If they were here, it meant that something was going on inside that dungeon. Something important enough for the Vale family to take notice.
’Did I miss something when I researched it?’
She had picked this dungeon because it was supposed to be safe. But if the Vale family was interested in it, that meant there was more to it than she had initially thought.
Her fingers tightened around Orion’s wrist, and she felt him tense beside her.
They had two options.
Either Stay hidden and leave. Forget about the dungeon and find another one later. Or, sneak inside anyway.
Neither option was ideal.
If they left, they would miss out on the training opportunity. But if they went inside... they might get caught. And getting caught by the Vale family was not an option.
Selene took a deep breath.
She needed to make a decision.
