Chapter 47: Ch 47: A Game of Chase- Part 3
As soon as they arrived at the base, Orion’s eyes widened in shock.
He had expected some rundown shelter or a cramped, barely livable space. Instead, the place was large—secure.
It was nothing like the chaotic shelters he had been hiding in. The walls were reinforced, the furniture sturdy, and everything about the space screamed prepared.
Selene watched as Orion slowly took in his surroundings, his head tilting back as he scanned the high ceilings.
"You’ll be living here now. You can pick any empty room you want."
She told him casually.
Orion’s mouth parted in surprise. "
Any room?"
"Any room."
Selene confirmed.
Excitement flickered across his face, but he quickly masked it. Without another word, Orion dashed forward, eager to explore the space and claim a room for himself.
Selene smirked slightly as she watched him disappear down the hall.
’We are going to run out of room at this rate. I will have to think of expanding this place soon. I hope I am able to buy a place expander from the system shop when it opens. But for that, I need more exp points.’
That was something that would happen later. For now, Selene could only stock points and hope that the changes happen soon.
Ethan sighed beside her, shaking his head.
"This is a terrible idea."
She ignored him and stepped into the living room.
Zara was lounging on the couch, legs crossed, an arm lazily draped over the backrest.
She had been watching the scene unfold, and when Selene and Ethan entered, she arched an amused brow.
"So, you went out to find a girl, and you brought back a kid?"
Zara drawled,
Selene shrugged.
"Plans changed."
Zara’s gaze flicked toward the hall where Orion had vanished.
"And he’s worth it?"
"He has great potential. Trust me on this"
Selene said firmly.
Zara hummed, considering her words.
Then, her attention shifted to Ethan. Unlike Selene, Ethan looked bitter. His lips were pressed into a firm line, his shoulders tense.
More than that—Zara caught something in his expression that almost made her laugh.
Jealousy.
It wasn’t obvious, but after knowing Ethan for so long, she could see the signs.
’Is he jealous of a kid?’
The thought amused her far more than it should have.
Deciding to let Ethan stew in his own emotions, she stretched her arms above her head.
"Well, if you trust him, then I won’t argue. But if he turns out to be a brat, that’s your problem."
Selene rolled her eyes.
"Noted."
—
Once she felt Orion had enough time to settle in, Selene decided to check on him.
She found him in his new room, sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at something in front of him.
Or rather—staring at something only he could see.
Selene recognized the distant, panicked look in his eyes immediately.
’He’s looking at his system.’
Orion was so absorbed in whatever he was reading that he didn’t even notice her enter.
Selene leaned against the doorframe.
"You’re going to burn a hole into the air if you keep staring like that."
Orion jumped, his head snapping toward her. He quickly tried to dismiss the system window—but after a second, he stopped and just sighed.
"What do you want?"
He muttered.
Selene smirked.
"Come down for dinner."
Orion hesitated.
"...Dinner?"
"Yes, you know, food? The thing people eat to survive?"
He scowled but stood up anyway.
The moment he stepped into the main room, the rich aroma of food hit him, and his stomach growled loudly.
Orion immediately froze in embarrassment.
Selene, Zara, and Ethan all turned to look at him.
Ethan snorted.
"Well, at least we know he’s not a ghost."
Orion scowled but quickly hurried to the table, practically throwing himself into a seat. The second the food was served, he ate fast—too fast, as if someone was going to take it away.
Selene frowned but said nothing.
After dinner, once everyone was settled, she finally spoke.
"I’ve decided on our next dungeon."
Zara leaned forward, interested. Ethan remained neutral. But Orion—
Orion froze.
His grip tightened around his empty plate.
He looked up at her, panic flickering in his eyes.
"I—I don’t want to go."
He hesitated.
Selene nodded.
"That’s fine."
Orion blinked.
That... was not the reaction he expected.
"But, if you want to improve, you’ll have to enter dungeons eventually. Hiding forever won’t help you"
She continued.
Orion swallowed.
"What do you mean?"
Selene leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table.
"The system allows you to level up. But only if you challenge yourself. Dungeons are the best way to grow stronger. The more you fight, the more you improve. The more you improve, the better your abilities become."
She explained.
Orion hesitated.
She made it sound so simple.
But to him, dungeons were death traps.
He had seen people enter and never come back.
Still—if what she was saying was true...
"You’re saying my barrier could get stronger?"
Orion asked slowly.
"Not just stronger. You could evolve it. Right now, you’re a D-rank Barrier Master. But with enough effort, you could reach B-rank. Maybe even A-rank. Or higher"
Selene said.
Orion’s breath hitched. He wanted to become stronger since it meant he would be able to do more and be safe from other people as well.
But he had never thought it was actually achievable.
Selene’s gaze remained steady.
"It’s up to you. If you don’t want to fight, I won’t force you. But if you want to stop being scared—if you want to grow—then you need to take that first step."
Orion clenched his fists tight
He wanted to deny it.
He wanted to say no and stay in the safety of this base forever.
But a small, stubborn part of him wanted to believe her.
Could he really evolve?
Could he really stop being the weak, helpless kid he had always been?
Selene didn’t pressure him for an answer.
She just leaned back and smirked.
"Think about it."
Orion swallowed.
He already was.
