Chapter 158 - 157: You Can’t Beat Me

Chapter 158: Chapter 157: You Can’t Beat Me

Gu Qili gave Mickey the trinkets she had bought as gifts, things like lavender scented bottles which were particularly suitable for girls.

Mickey tied one of them as a pendant on her backpack, perfectly matching the color of her backpack.

As the two of them walked and talked, they inevitably discussed the incident where she was shot.

Mickey was startled, listening to her recount the ordeal had her heart hanging in mid-air, nearly costing her half a life.

"It’s okay now, it’s pretty much healed, and I had cosmetic stitches, so there won’t be any scars." She reassured her with a pat on the hand, suddenly smirking with pride: "Although I suffered some superficial wounds, you could say it was a blessing in disguise."

"Is it because you and Mu Shuoqian..." Her name was uttered with sheer frustration as she raised her hand and chased after her, ready to strike, falling right into the trap she was too pleased to notice.

The two were cavorting when Mickey suddenly stopped, her gaze unfriendly as she looked towards someone not too far away and spoke with a hostile tone:

Gu Qili also saw Hu Jiaojiao, dressed in a pale blue gown, her long hair cascading over her shoulders, fair skin, and delicate features. To anyone unfamiliar with her, at first sight, she truly was an unforgettable beauty.

What Gu Qili noticed was not the person but her clothes; if she remembered correctly, this was a limited-edition dress launched by AMN this year, purportedly selling at a six-figure price. Judging by the craftsmanship, it didn’t seem like a knockoff, but she didn’t believe Hu Jiaojiao could afford such a luxury item. Like her, she was now from an ordinary family; there was only one possibility that she could afford this dress: someone had given it to her.

Deng Feifei couldn’t have gifted her the dress, as she herself was barely keeping afloat, let alone paying attention to Hu Jiaojiao.

"Qiqi, Mi, you guys are also here for the job fair?" Hu Jiaojiao fluttered over like a buoyant butterfly, her enthusiasm as if they were on very good terms.

Gu Qili and Mickey did not respond, wishing they could pretend not to see her.

But Hu Jiaojiao blocked their path, looking down at her new dress with a quite self-satisfied air, she asked, "Qiqi, do you like my dress?"

Gu Qili, hearing her inquiry, hesitated but finally stopped and gave her an appraisal before nodding, "It’s nice."

Just as Hu Jiaojiao was about to bask in her vanity, she heard Gu Qili continue, "No matter how prettily you dress up, you can’t hide the shabbiness of your soul."

Hu Jiaojiao’s face turned ashen upon being insulted, "Qiqi, why are you being so vulgar?"

"I am vulgar, not only do I curse, but I also like to get physical, and if you don’t leave now, believe me, I will hit you." Gu Qili said, and indeed made a gesture as if she would raise her arm.

Hu Jiaojiao, having been pushed and injured her hand by Gu Qili before, knew she wasn’t joking, so she retorted with anger, "Look at yourself, not at all like a lady of your status, it serves you right that your family is bankrupt, a shrew like you doesn’t fit to be any kind of lady."

"You think you’re suitable?" Chen Yishu had been listening in the background and finally couldn’t help interjecting, his demeanor icy as if he didn’t recognize her at all.

Hu Jiaojiao did not expect to encounter Chen Yishu and immediately wore a mournful expression as if aggrieved, reaching to tug at Chen Yishu’s sleeve, "Yishu, you heard it all, she is bullying me like this."

With a displeased flick, Chen Yishu shrugged off her hand and went to stand by Gu Qili’s side, saying, "Let’s go, aren’t you here for the job fair?"

Gu Qili and Mickey ignored the still pitiful-looking Hu Jiaojiao and were about to leave when Hu Jiaojiao suddenly raised her voice, "Qiqi, are you going to the job fair?"

Gu Qili glanced at her impatiently, wondering what shameless thing she would bring up next.

Hu Jiaojiao smirked contemptuously, "I advise you to give up, the position you have your eye on will never be yours, you can’t compete with me."

"Hu Jiaojiao, where does this confidence of yours come from?"

"You don’t need to worry about that, just remember what I said, you can’t compete with me, a woman with a record like you,"

With that, Hu Jiaojiao twisted her waist and left, as if everything was under control.

"What’s she got that you don’t, yet she’s confident she can win against you?" Mickey snorted and then looked puzzledly at Chen Yishu, "She always clings to you, calling you ’Yishu’ this and ’Yishu’ that, why did she just turn and leave today?"

Chen Yishu shook his head, "Then I really should thank her for the favor of not clinging to me."

Gu Qili’s mood wasn’t affected by her, and the three discussed the job fair while walking towards the library.

The job fair started promptly at one in the afternoon, and the special area cleared out in the library was already teeming with people.

Following Gu Qili’s advice, Mickey submitted a resume too. She was not particularly invested in this path, so she wasn’t very serious and didn’t harbor any expectations of being hired.

At the job fair, they ran into Hu Jiaojiao again. She had changed out of her dress from the morning and appeared in her regular school uniform. Seeing the resume in Gu Qili’s hand that had yet to be handed out, she snorted coldly, "Even if you submit it, it’s a waste of effort. Better to submit it somewhere else. Printing a resume costs quite a bit too."

Mickey frowned, itching to punch her, "Hu Jiaojiao, are you out of your mind? It’s none of your business whether we submit our resumes or not."

"I’m just kindly reminding you, forget about the French translator position. Submit your resume elsewhere, you might still have a chance with Grand Lisboa." After saying this, Hu Jiaojiao left with an air of arrogance.

Mickey looked toward Gu Qili who hadn’t spoken. Since entering the job fair, she seemed to be in a state of indecision, as if weighed down by heavy thoughts. Hu Jiaojiao was making such a scene, yet she didn’t engage in a fight with her. Mickey felt there must be some problem.

"Qiqi, don’t mind her. You do your thing, she does hers. She really fancies herself the sun, expecting everyone to revolve around her," Mickey tugged at her, "Come on, let’s check out that place over there."

Gu Qili didn’t say a word and walked away with her.

The bustling recruitment fair lasted the whole afternoon. Grand Lisboa received a mountain of resumes, and as most people dispersed, only a few remained to clean up the venue.

After attending the job fair and seeing the disarray it left behind, it felt like the end of graduation, with everyone scattering in all directions, likely with little time left to gather together again.

Mickey suggested they should go out to unwind to help Gu Qili recover from the shock.

Yishu only knew that Gu Qili was injured, but she didn’t mention it was a gunshot wound; he thought it was just an accident.

The three decided to go for dinner and then to karaoke.

"Qiqi, why are you blankly staring at your phone?" While waiting for the food, Mickey nudged her. Yishu curiously glanced over too, but since he was sitting across the table, he could only take a perfunctory look.

Gu Qili was actually struggling with how to report her whereabouts to Mu Shuoqian. Since living at Jingshan, this was the first time she had missed a meal there.

After composing a WeChat message, she gritted her teeth and sent it.

Mu Shuoqian was in a meeting, berating several managers who were frazzled. It was apparent that he was in a bad mood.

Just then, his phone chimed with a notification sound - the distinctive tone of WeChat. And since his WeChat only had one contact, it was obvious without looking that the message was from Gu Qili.

He gave a cold glance at the people still waiting for his decision, said "Discuss among yourselves," and then started reading the message on his phone.

"I won’t be coming back for dinner tonight, going out to eat with classmates, and we’re also going to sing karaoke afterward, so don’t wait for me."

His frown deepened, his expression even colder than before, making subordinates shiver.

Gu Qili anxiously awaited his reply, and soon the screen lit up. Mickey was engrossed in conversation with Yishu and didn’t notice her.

"Who are you dining with?"

Gu Qili typed "Mickey" and glanced over at Yishu across the table, hesitating whether she should tell him about Yishu’s presence.

He seemed to particularly care about her relationship with Yishu. Perhaps lying about it wasn’t a good idea.

After pondering for a while, she added three more characters: Chen Yishu.

"What are you eating?" His message didn’t show the displeasure she’d expected; instead, he was still showing concern about what she was eating.

Gu Qili quickly typed the name of the restaurant, mentioning that their char siu was especially tasty.

After sending this message, there was no response from Mu Shuoqian. Meanwhile, their ordered dishes had arrived, and Gu Qili soon forgot about the matter.

But before the second dish was served, she heard a commotion at the door. Under the table, Mickey pinched her hard, giving her a look that spelled doom. Gu Qili also curiously peeked outside.

To her sight came the familiar figures of Li Ruhai and his group. There was nothing surprising at first glance, but then her eyes caught the man who followed Li Ruhai, sauntering in unhurriedly. Gu Qili almost choked on the char siu in her mouth.

No matter how tasty the char siu here was, it was just a small storefront without even private rooms, and the decor was so plain that it was spartan. So, when he, such a radiant figure, appeared, the place truly lit up, the lighting even seemed brighter than usual.

Li Ruhai and his group escorted him in. Mu Shuoqian, with one hand in his pocket, eyes straight ahead, brought a powerful aura with him that swept through the small restaurant like a hurricane.

Then, they sat down right at the table diagonally across from Gu Qili, with Li Ruhai calling the waitstaff over to order. Mu Shuoqian faced her, and though his unfathomable gaze never lingered on her, Gu Qili found herself unable to swallow a single bite of char siu anymore.
