Chapter 83: Perfect Start To Married Life
Chapter 83: Perfect Start To Married Life
Jean walked over, calm as a storm about to strike, and plucked another beer from the table before sinking onto the couch opposite Logan. She crossed one long leg over the other, completely unbothered, her bare legs peeking out from beneath the oversized white shirt that clearly belonged to Logan.
Logan’s eyes followed the movement. The shirt... his shirt... fit her too well. Draped just right. She looked better in it than he ever did, and that realization made his throat tighten.
He hated that she looked like she belonged here. In his shirt. On his couch.
He was just beginning to spiral when...
Emma dropped the bomb.
"Well then. Get your lawyer ready, Mr. Kingsley," she said, brushing her hands together. "We have a wedding to prepare for in about..." she checked her wristwatch, "...nine hours."
Logan blinked. "What?"
Jean looked straight at him, unfazed. "I hope you’re ready, Logan."
Henry, who had half risen from his seat in alarm, gaped. "Wait... wait. What the hell is happening here? Whose wedding are we talking about?"
Jean sipped her beer before stating it loud and clear for all the gods and ghosts of Manhattan to hear, "Logan Kingsley weds Jean Adams. It’s happening in just a few hours from now."
She looked straight into Logan’s stunned eyes.
"Isn’t that true, Logan?"
The room fell into silence.
Logan stared at her, then at Emma, then at Henry... whose mouth hung open like a cartoon character. No one was blinking. No one was breathing.
Finally, Logan let out a low curse under his breath, dragging a hand down his face.
"Goddamn it."
Emma clapped her hands together, suddenly all business. "Alright. I’ll call the company lawyer. He’ll bring the shareholders to the marriage registry office within the hour."
She turned to Henry, pointing a finger like a general giving orders. "You... get the cameras. We’ll record the announcement and the ceremony. Let the world know exactly who Jean Adams chooses to marry."
Henry blinked. "Cameras? This is getting way too dramatic..."
"Idiot, it is proof that Jean is transferring all her shares to Logan." Emma ignored him and spun toward Jean, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "And you, hang tight. I’m going to find you a killer dress. If you’re making history, you’re damn well going to look the part."
As Emma dashed off, Logan finally broke his silence. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, voice low and bitter.
"I only called you," he said to Emma, "because I hoped maybe you’d talk some sense into her. But clearly, the whole Adams family is a goddamn circus."
Emma froze in her tracks and turned slowly, face hardening. "You don’t get to say that."
Logan stood up, anger rising in his chest. "No? I think I do. You think this is some dream come true? That I’m lucky to marry into a family like hers?" He let out a sharp, humorless laugh. "I’ve had enough of the Adams name. The lies. The backstabbing. The two faced legacy you all wear like a crown. I built everything I have to avoid getting tainted by people like you."
His words cut through the room like a blade. Jean sat quietly, head down, as if each word from Logan’s mouth was a weight on her shoulders.
He wasn’t done. "I don’t need your dirty money. I don’t need your fake spotlight. I don’t need any of it..."
And then...
"I’ll do anything."
Jean’s voice cut through the rant, soft but certain.
Logan paused, stunned.
"...Jean?" he murmured, as if trying to be sure he heard her right.
She lifted her head, eyes locking with his. "Marry me... and I’ll do anything you want me to do."
Emma hurried to her side, dropping to a crouch beside her. "Stop it, Jean," she whispered urgently. "Don’t say that. He’s going to use it against you."
"You know we can still hear you," Henry muttered, glancing between the women.
Emma rolled her eyes. "Jean, please..."
But Jean didn’t budge. Her eyes stayed fixed on Logan.
"Logan... do it. I’m offering you my everything." Her voice trembled but didn’t falter. "Are you really going to turn me down?"
A smirk tugged at Logan’s lips, but it was cold, calculated.
"That’s what I wanted to hear," he said slowly. "Jean Adams, finally breaking her walls for a man she thinks is beneath her." He walked closer, hovering just enough to intimidate. "What a perfect start to married life."
Emma stiffened. She didn’t like the look in his eyes. Something told her this might be a mistake.
Logan tilted his head. "I’ll have my legal team draw up a marriage contract. Be ready to abide by every clause I draft... Ms. Adams."
Jean’s heart pounded in her chest, but her voice was steady. "I’m ready... Mr. Kingsley."
Emma was already halfway to the door, rattling off her mental checklist... lawyer, dress, media contacts... when Jean’s voice stopped her.
"Wait."
Emma turned, startled. "What is it?"
Jean stood up, the beer bottle now forgotten on the table, her expression dead serious. "You can’t go out alone. They’ll come for you."
Emma frowned. "Who will?"
"My family," Jean said. "They know you’re the only one I’d turn to. You’re the first person they’ll come looking for. And if they don’t find me..." Her voice faltered, but she caught herself. "They might hurt you, Emma. Just to get answers."
Emma’s eyes widened in disbelief. "They wouldn’t..."
"They would," Jean said firmly. "And they can."
She turned to Henry, her voice low but commanding. "Go with her. Don’t leave her side. Not even for a second. Watch her back. Check for anyone following. Anyone watching. Make sure she gets to where she needs to be and back."
Henry exchanged a glance with Logan, then gave a curt nod. "Understood."
Logan frowned, arms folded. "You’re being paranoid."
"No," Jean said, her eyes locking with his. "I’m being careful."
There was something unreadable in her gaze. Something she wasn’t saying. Logan noticed it, but said nothing... for now.
Emma hesitated for a beat, then walked up to Jean, wrapping her in a brief but fierce hug. "Don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone."
Jean smiled faintly. "Too late."
Emma gave her one last look, then grabbed Henry by the arm. "Let’s go, bodyguard."
