Chapter 80: Feeding A Drama Queen

Meanwhile...

Henry stared at his phone as it rang... again.

No answer.

He leaned back against the leather seat of his SUV, parked just outside Logan Kingsley’s penthouse building. His fingers tapped impatiently on the steering wheel.

"This girl better not be ignoring me for beauty sleep," he muttered.

He redialed.Still no answer. With a sigh, he tried one last time.

The line connected.

And then came a voice so sharp it could cut glass. "Who the hell is calling me this late at night? I don’t need any credit cards or free grocery offers. I’m hella rich, you idiots!"

Henry blinked. "Uhh... Miss Emma?"

There was a pause. Then a beat of silence.

Her tone shifted instantly.

"Henry?"

"Yeah. Sorry to call so late, but... uh... it’s urgent. It’s about Jean."

Another pause.

"...What did she do now? Burn down a boardroom? Bite a CEO?"

Henry rubbed his temple. "No, no. She’s fine. I mean... she’s alive. Just... she’s at Mr. Kingsley’s penthouse right now. Injured. Refusing to go to a hospital. Being... difficult."

There was a sound on the other end, like Emma had sat up straight in bed.

"Wait. Wait. Hold up. Back up. Did you just say Logan Kingsley’s penthouse?"

"...Yes." He replied.

"Are you telling me that Logan kidnapped Jean?"

Henry nearly choked on air.

"What? No! I didn’t say that... He didn’t... She wasn’t... Look, no ropes were involved! Or duct tape!"

Emma’s voice was laced with panic and fury. "Oh my God, I’m calling the police..."

"No! Emma, stop! Please. Nobody kidnapped anybody. She came with him. Well... he did carry her... but she wasn’t screaming or anything."

Emma wasn’t having it. "Why was she at his place then? What kind of messed-up Twilight Zone are we living in?"

Henry scratched the back of his neck.

"...Honestly, I have no clue. I just do what I’m told."

A deep exhale came from Emma’s end.

"Jesus. Okay. I’m coming. I don’t know what the hell is going on, but if Jean’s hurt and in Logan’s lair, I’m not letting her face that alone."

Henry smiled slightly. "Thought you’d say that."

"Tell Logan I’m not above dragging his smug billionaire ass to court if I find even a scratch on her."

"Understood. See you soon."

Emma hung up.

Henry pocketed the phone with a slow shake of his head.

"Jean Adams and Logan Kingsley under the same roof... What could possibly go wrong?"

Logan saw the doctor to the door, giving him a brief nod of thanks before shutting it. The hallway fell into silence again.

He turned and made his way back into the bedroom.

Jean sat on the bed like a sulking cat, arms crossed, eyes narrowed, chin tilted in defiance. Her hair was still slightly damp, a few strands clinging to her cheek. She didn’t even try to hide her scowl.

Logan stood by the foot of the bed, folding his arms and watching her with an unreadable expression.

"You know," she muttered without looking at him, "stop staring at me like that. You look like a creep."

He raised an eyebrow and slowly sat down on the edge of the bed, facing her. "What did the doctor say?"

She looked away, scoffing. "That’s none of your concern."

Logan’s gaze dipped briefly to the faint bruises on her forearm... faint, but still visible. His voice dropped slightly. "The bruises on your arms... Did I give you those?"

Jean’s expression changed instantly. She quickly drew her arms inward, covering them, her jaw tightening.

"The doctor couldn’t keep his mouth shut, huh?" she snapped.

Logan didn’t flinch. "Jean... you don’t look okay. If something’s wrong, if there’s anything you need help with..."

She cut him off with a glare sharp enough to slice through steel.

"I told you," she hissed, "I’ll talk only when you marry me. So if you really want to be my hero, get a damn lawyer."

Logan exhaled heavily, raking a hand through his hair. The woman was impossible.

"Maybe," he muttered, "you’ll change your mind when Emma arrives."

That made her pause.

Her voice softened, just a little. "You called Emma here?"

He nodded once. "She’s your cousin. Maybe she can put some sense into that stubborn head of yours."

Jean blinked. "How did you even know she was my cousin?"

Logan shrugged lazily. "She thanked me once... for pulling you out of the ocean. Guess it stuck."

A small silence fell between them, almost peaceful, until Logan pulled out his phone again.

"I’m calling Henry to bring you something to eat. What do you want?"

Jean thought for a moment, then met his eyes with a completely serious expression. "Fried chicken. Pizza. Beer. And lots of ice cream."

Logan blinked.

"That’s... an insane food order."

Jean smirked. "Good. I’m feeling insane."

Logan stared at her like she’d grown a second head, but he didn’t argue.

Instead, he walked out of the room dialing Henry, muttering under his breath, "Get ready, Henry. We’re feeding a drama queen tonight."

The knock on the penthouse door came sooner than expected... sharp, furious, and repetitive.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Logan opened the door without much thought, only to have a full-grown woman launch herself at him with the fury of a betrayed sibling.

"You jerk!" Emma screamed, slapping at his chest and shoving him back into the penthouse.

Logan stumbled a step but caught himself. "What the...?"

"I trusted you!" she raged, pointing a shaking finger in his face. "I thought you were one of the rare decent men left on Earth, but turns out you’re just another wolf in designer suits!"

"What are you even talking about?" Logan blinked, genuinely confused.

"You kidnapped Jean!" Emma screamed again, tears of frustration forming in her eyes. "Do you have any idea how scared I was when I heard she was in your penthouse? How dare you bring her here like she’s some kind of...!"

"Emma!" a voice shouted from inside the bedroom.

Emma froze.

Jean appeared at the hallway entrance, limping slightly, wearing her same wrinkled cocktail dress with a blanket wrapped around her and looking far more annoyed than afraid. "He didn’t kidnap me. I got hurt, and he brought me here because I couldn’t walk. Now please stop giving the man a heart attack."

Emma blinked. "Wait... what?"

Logan exhaled, rubbing his temple. "Thank you."
