Chapter 50: The fear within Jean’s heart

So they just disappear when she needs them most?

Logan didn’t press further, but his mind was racing. In normal circumstances, family would be the first to come running. Why weren’t they here? Why didn’t Jean ever mention them?

He turned back around slowly and walked away, but now, a new thought burned alongside his anger: What the hell happened between Jean and her parents?

Logan walked through the pristine corridor, each step weighed down by a mix of frustration and suspicion. Why did Jean accept the deal?

There had to be more going on than what she was letting on. Something he couldn’t yet piece together.

He opened the door to his hospital room and froze for a moment.

Two uniformed officers stood near the window, their notepads ready. His family was already there, tension painting their faces.

His mother’s worried eyes met his.

His father, composed as ever, gave him a silent nod. Hannah sat on the edge of the couch, wringing her fingers nervously.

Logan understood immediately.

This wasn’t just about survival. This was about reputation, about truth. About doing the right thing.

Logan sat down slowly, glancing around at his family at everything he stood to lose or protect.

He exhaled, steadying his voice.

His family stood quietly nearby... his mother wringing her hands, his father’s expression unreadable, and Hannah nervously looking between them.

The lead officer gave a nod. "Mr. Kingsley, we’d like to hear your account of what happened on the yacht that night. It’s important we get your statement while the memories are still fresh."

Logan paused, his mind flickering through everything... the fight, the storm, Jean’s falling overboard, and Junho standing there doing nothing.

He cleared his throat. "I understand the importance, Officer," Logan said calmly, "but before I say anything in detail, I want my lawyer present. I’m sure you can understand... I’ve learned not to speak casually when the truth has so many layers."

The officer frowned but nodded. "Of course."

Logan leaned forward slightly, his voice quieter but deliberate. "But I will say this... when Jean and I went overboard, we weren’t alone on that deck. Junho Kim and his assistant were both there. They saw everything."

The officers exchanged a glance, and Logan saw the interest spike in their eyes.

"I trust that you’ll follow up with them," he added, voice steady, "because their version of that night might be very informative for your investigation."

The knock on the door was sharp and authoritative.

Jean sat up in her hospital bed, her face still pale from exhaustion. Emma stood beside her, arms crossed protectively.

Two officers stepped inside, their badges flashing briefly under the fluorescent lights. One of them, a tall man with a clipboard, cleared his throat.

"Ms. Adams," he said politely but firmly, "we need to ask you a few questions regarding the incident on the yacht."

Jean’s stomach twisted. She already knew this would come, but she didn’t expect it so soon. She straightened her shoulders. "There’s nothing to talk about," she said evenly. "It was an accident. That’s all."

The officer exchanged a look with his partner, then stepped closer. "You’re saying it was purely an accident? No foul play involved?"

Jean’s heart raced. She glanced at Emma, who shook her head ever so slightly, silently telling her not to say anything reckless.

"I’m saying," Jean said slowly, choosing her words carefully, "that storms are unpredictable. No one’s to blame."

The second officer, a woman with sharp eyes, stepped forward. "That’s interesting. Because Mr. Kingsley didn’t seem so sure."

Jean blinked. Her chest tightened. "What do you mean?"

The officer’s lips curved just slightly. "Mr. Kingsley requested his lawyer before giving a full statement. However, he made it clear that Junho Kim and his assistant were present on the deck when you and Mr. Kingsley went overboard. He implied that what happened wasn’t just about bad weather."

Jean’s breath caught.

Logan hadn’t backed down. He hadn’t accepted the deal to stay quiet. He wanted the truth out.

And if he wasn’t protecting the Kims... it meant she had no choice.

For a long moment, Jean said nothing. Her hands gripped the edge of the blanket.

The officer leaned in. "Ms. Adams, you can help us. Or you can stay silent and let others control the story. It’s your choice."

Jean finally looked up, meeting the officer’s eyes. There was no fear there now, only determination starting to brew.

"I want to speak with my lawyer first," she said clearly.

The moment the officers left the room, the door clicking shut behind them, Emma rushed to Jean’s side.

"Jean, you have to tell them the truth," Emma urged in a fierce whisper. Her hands gripped Jean’s shoulders. "Logan’s already taken a stand. You don’t have to protect those monsters anymore."

Jean closed her eyes. Her heart was pounding so loudly it almost drowned out Emma’s voice.

"It’s not that simple," she whispered.

Emma frowned. "Of course it’s simple. You didn’t do anything wrong! Junho tried to ruin you! If you stay quiet, he wins... he wins, Jean!"

Jean opened her eyes, and for the first time, Emma saw a different kind of fear in them. A deep, old fear that went far beyond Junho’s tricks or Logan’s deep threatening gaze.

"It’s not just about the Kims’," Jean said, trembling and biting her lips in fear. "It’s my parents."

Emma stiffened, the anger on her face slowly shifting to horror.

"If this scandal gets out... if my name gets dragged into something like this," Jean continued, voice barely above a whisper, "they’ll come for me, Emma. You don’t understand. They have already tried once..." Her throat tightened. "When I was seventeen."

Emma’s hands loosened. "Jean..." she breathed, her heart sinking.

"They locked me away, remember?" Jean said, forcing a bitter smile. "All because I made a brave move against them. They said it was to protect me... but they just wanted to protect themselves."

Emma’s eyes filled with tears. She remembered. How Jean had disappeared for months, how no one was allowed to visit her, how she came back colder, more distant.

No one ever talked about it.

"They’ll do it again," Jean said, voice breaking. "Maybe worse this time. If this scandal blows up... there’ll be no one to save me. Not you. Not anyone."

Emma sat down beside her heavily, struggling with her emotions. "Jean... I’m your family. No matter what. We’ll find a way to protect you."

Jean looked away, staring at the rain on the window.

But deep inside, she wondered... Was it even possible to escape people who owned your life?

Meanwhile, in his own private room, Logan sat by the window, arms crossed tightly over his chest.

The rain blurred the city skyline outside, but Logan wasn’t really seeing it. His mind was back in Jean’s room... the way she had looked at him when he stormed in... not surprised, not scared. Like she already knew where this was heading.

It didn’t sit right with him.

He dragged a hand through his damp hair and leaned forward, elbows on his knees, staring at the floor.

Jean had always been stubborn — strong in a way that annoyed and fascinated him at the same time. But today, there was something different in her. Something she wasn’t saying.

Why would she accept Mr. Kim’s deal so easily?

Why wouldn’t she expose Junho right alongside him?

What was she so afraid of?

Logan clenched his jaw, frustration gnawing at him. He could handle corporate wars, scandals, and betrayal. But this silence, this invisible chain that kept Jean from fighting back... it infuriated him.

"Dammit, Jean," he muttered under his breath. "What the hell are you protecting?"

Henry poked his head into the room quietly, sensing Logan’s foul mood.

"You okay, boss?"

Logan didn’t look up. "Get me my lawyer. I’m not making another move until we know exactly what we’re stepping into."

Henry nodded and left swiftly.

Alone again, Logan leaned back against the chair, closing his eyes briefly. He told himself he was angry because it was a matter of business and reputation.

But deep down, he knew that wasn’t the whole truth.

It was Jean.

Jean lay curled on the hospital bed, her gaze lost in the raindrops racing down the windowpane. For a moment, the world outside her private room felt far away... like another universe where everything was normal.

Safe.

The soft creak of the door caught her attention. Jean stiffened and felt wary.

Standing halfway inside the room was a woman... elegant, composed despite the lingering tension in her face. She wore a long coat over her shoulders, her hair pulled back neatly. Her eyes... clear and striking like Logan’s... were studying Jean quietly.

Jean pushed herself up, wincing slightly at the pull of her muscles. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice came out as guarded.

The woman hesitated, as if she hadn’t meant to disturb her. "I’m sorry... I didn’t mean to intrude. I was just..." She shook her head lightly. "I’m Logan’s mother. Martha Kingsley."

Jean’s entire body tensed.

Of course.

Another Kingsley.
