Chapter 48: Mr Kim and his treacherous son, Junho
"Logan!"
His name broke through the noise, a familiar cry that pierced straight into his chest.
He turned, barely in time to catch sight of his mother, Martha Kingsley, sprinting toward him with tears streaming down her face.
Her coat flapped behind her, her hair messy for hours... days of restless worry. But none of that mattered now.
"My son!" she choked, breathless.
Logan didn’t have time to react before her arms wrapped around him with a force that made him stumble.
"M-Mom?" he whispered, a bit stunned.
She didn’t let go. Her fingers clawed into his back like she was terrified he might disappear again. "You’re alive... you’re really here. My boy..."
Behind her, Hannah, his younger sister, arrived... panting, eyes red. "Logan, oh my god... Logan!"
And then Henry, his longtime assistant and the man who’d kept the Kingsley family from falling apart while Logan was gone, jogged up. He didn’t speak... just exhaled sharply, relief washing over his face.
Logan finally wrapped his arms around his mother. "I’m here. I’m fine."
"You’re not fine," Martha pulled back to examine his face, cupping his cheeks, brushing hair from his forehead. "You’re skin and bones. Did they not feed you on that island? What happened? Why did it take this long?"
"Mom!" He shook his head and chuckled.
Hannah jumped in, hugging him from the side. "You smell like a wild animal," she mumbled through a sob-laugh, but refused to let go.
Logan laughed hoarsely. "Yeah, I got that a few times recently."
Remembering how Jean said that too.
Martha pressed her forehead against his. "I thought I lost you. I haven’t eaten. I couldn’t sleep. I prayed to every god there is..."
Logan’s jaw tensed... not just from the emotion, but from memory.
Jean’s voice echoed in his head... "You think your mother would starve herself waiting for you? Do parents even do that?"
He pulled his mother closer again, swallowing the lump in his throat.
Martha Kingsley did. She would.
And now... she had him back.

Jean sat beside Emma on one of the sleek leather benches, her body wrapped in a fresh blanket and a dull ache pulsing through her limbs. The corridor smelled of antiseptic and soft perfume from the nurses passing by. Jean’s mind should’ve been at ease, but her thoughts swirled like a storm.
Emma squeezed her hand. "Your room will be ready in a few minutes. Just hang in there, okay?"
Jean nodded absently, eyes drifting toward the elevator as the doors dinged open.
She froze.
Logan stepped out.
But he wasn’t alone.
A woman clung to his arm... tearful, loving. His mother. A younger girl... could be his sister, hovered beside him, eyes red-rimmed but glowing with relief. And then came a man... broad-shouldered and silent, his expression composed but his eyes betrayed everything.
Jared Kingsley.
The legend of the corporate world himself.
His lips quivered before he swallowed the emotion and placed a firm hand on Logan’s shoulder.
Jean’s brows knit together.
They were all there. Every last one of them.
Crying.
Holding him.
Like he was the center of their universe.
Her breath hitched.
Was this... real?
Her gaze flicked to Logan. He was laughing... softly, as his sister tugged his arm, and his mother fussed with the edge of his coat like he was five again. Then his eyes shifted... suddenly finding hers across the hallway.
Jean quickly looked away.
She shouldn’t feel... anything about this.
But Logan’s words echoed in her mind... "My mother would starve herself waiting for me."
She had scoffed at it.
She thought he was trying to get under her skin. Maybe even guilt her. But seeing Martha Kingsley now, clutching Logan’s arm like she feared he’d vanish again...
Was that a bluff?
Jean couldn’t tell anymore.
She kept her eyes on the floor as Logan passed by with his family. He didn’t stop. Didn’t speak. But a quiet tension lingered in the air like he’d noticed her reaction.
Emma leaned in and whispered, "That’s quite the welcome party for Logan Kingsley."
Jean didn’t reply.
She wasn’t sure if she was angry... or envious of that kind of love.

Jean was seated on the hospital bed, her expression tired but composed. Emma sat beside her, arms crossed and ready to guard her boss from the world if needed. The room smelled of disinfectant and exhaustion.
A knock came.
Before Jean could respond, the door opened... and in walked Mr. Kim, followed closely by... the treacherous son, Junho.
Jean’s heart dropped.
Emma instantly stood up. "Get out."
"We come in peace," Mr. Kim said calmly, ignoring the venom in Emma’s tone. "And with an offer."
Junho kept his head low, hands clenched. He looked like a child dragged into a room to apologize for breaking a vase. Jean narrowed her eyes.
"I’m not here to excuse what my son did," Mr. Kim continued, looking directly at Jean. "But if word gets out, it won’t just ruin him. It’ll ruin me, my company, everything I’ve built to honor my wife’s memory."
Jean stiffened.
He knew exactly which button to press.
"I sympathize with you, Ms. Adams. I truly do. But let’s not pretend this is just about feelings. This is business. And I believe we both still have something to gain."
Jean leaned back against the pillow, arms crossed. "You think you can waltz in here, flash a polite smile, and talk business after what your son did?"
Emma scoffed beside her. "You should be glad we haven’t reported him yet."
Junho opened his mouth to speak, but Mr. Kim raised a hand, silencing him.
"I’m not asking you to forget. I’m asking you to consider the bigger picture," Mr. Kim said, his voice composed. "The media already caught wind of your disappearance. You and Mr. Kingsley are the headlines right now... survivors, rivals, rumors of a relationship. All of it is brewing into something... powerful."
Jean’s eyes narrowed. "Get to the point."
"I want to reintroduce the deal. But on your terms," Mr. Kim said.
