Chapter 37: Logan’s Nightmare (18+)
"Oof... Jean, you okay?" Logan asked, bracing himself over her.
Jean blinked, momentarily stunned, then frowned. "Do you have to land on me every time?"
He smirked. "It’s the universe, not me. You’re gravity’s favorite."
"Get off."
He rolled to the side and lay there for a moment, both of them catching their breath in the silence of the forest.
After a few beats, Jean sat up. "We should finish the windbreak before it gets dark."
They completed the wall with dried moss stuffed into the crevices, using thick palm leaves to act as a makeshift roof. Logan added stones around the fire pit and piled in twigs and bark.
Jean watched him carefully arrange them. "You actually know what you’re doing."
"I was a Boy Scout. For like, a week."
She laughed. "That explains so much."
When the first flames flickered to life, Jean smiled... she really smiled and Logan noticed. It made the entire effort worth it.
They stepped back and admired their lopsided but sturdy shelter, with the fire crackling safely at the center.
"It’s ugly," Jean said.
"Like you after a bad hair day."
She elbowed him.
"But," she admitted quietly, "we might just survive this."
Logan glanced at her, a warmth in his eyes that had nothing to do with the fire. "We will."

Night fell, and with it came a strange calm. The improved shelter, with its thicker walls and low roof, helped trap the heat from the fire. It was the first time in days they didn’t feel like their bones were freezing.
Jean lay on her side, close to the fire, pulling Logan’s coat tighter around her. "Okay," she murmured, "this is definitely better."
Logan sat behind her, legs stretched out, resting his back against the wall. "Told you. We’re slowly becoming pros."
"You tripped over a vine and landed face-first in a termite nest."
"I was scouting."
Jean smiled faintly, her eyes fluttering shut.
But just as she began to relax, there was a low rustling outside the shelter.
Her eyes snapped open. "Did you hear that?"
Logan tensed, immediately alert. "Yeah."
The sound came again... closer. A rustle, a snap, followed by something that sounded like... heavy breathing?
Jean sat up quickly, grabbing a large stick from beside her. Logan motioned for her to stay behind and crept to the edge of the shelter. He peeked out through the leaves.
A pair of glowing eyes reflected in the firelight.
"Jean," he said slowly, "don’t scream."
"Why would I..."
Before she could finish, a wild boar burst through the bunch of trees, snorting and stomping, clearly agitated and territorial.
"Back!" Logan shouted, raising his arms to make himself look bigger.
Jean jumped behind him, heart racing. "That’s not a wild pig, that’s a mini truck with legs!"
The boar pawed the ground and squealed, ready to charge.
Thinking quickly, Logan grabbed a flaming stick from the fire and jabbed it toward the animal. It reared back, startled by the heat. Jean added to the chaos, banging two coconut shells together with a war cry she never knew she had in her.
Between the fire, noise, and panic, the boar squealed and bolted back into the forest.
Logan stood there breathing hard, still holding the firebrand. Jean, behind him, looked like she’d just fought in a jungle war.
They stood in stunned silence for a moment.
Then Logan turned slowly. "Did you just scare a wild boar off... with coconuts?"
Jean lifted the shells in each hand, breathing hard. "Don’t underestimate island resourcefulness, Kingsley."
Logan broke into laughter, shaking his head. "You’re something else, Adams."
"I could say the same about you."
They collapsed by the fire again, adrenaline slowly fading. Jean looked over at him with tired amusement. "Do you think we can go one night without some survival horror chasing us?"
"Nope," he grinned. "But hey, now we know we can take on a boar. Kind of."
Jean gave him a small smile as she leaned her head against the wall again. "Let’s just hope there’s no tiger next."
"Don’t jinx it."

The air was thick with sweat and chlorine. The muffled echoes of laughter and taunting bounced off the cold, tiled walls of the university locker room.
Logan stood in the center, his chest rising and falling rapidly, his oversized shirt clinging to his damp skin. The smell of musk and cheap deodorant lingered in the air.
He wasn’t alone.
"Hey Kingsley," a familiar voice sneered. "You think you’re better than us, huh? Mr. Top of the class."
Logan turned around slowly.
Three boys stood blocking the only exit, grinning with the kind of cruelty that’s learned, not born. His heart thudded in his chest like a war drum. He knew what was coming.
"I... I don’t want any trouble," Logan murmured.
One of the boys lunged forward, grabbing Logan’s collar and shoving him hard against the locker. His back slammed into the cold metal.
"You already brought trouble. Always raising your hand like a damn show-off. Acting like teachers’ pet when you’re just a fat loser."
Hands yanked at his shirt, tearing it at the seams.
"Stop!" Logan yelled, but his voice cracked with fear.
"Let’s see if brains can protect that pudgy body of yours," another mocked.
They forced him down. His clothes were ripped apart, piece by piece, exposing his trembling form.
The sting of their laughter cut deeper than their blows. Fists rained down, knees jabbed into his side, and every word of insult echoed louder than the last.
"Pig."
"Nobody wants you."
"You’ll never be anything."
Lying on the ground, bruised and humiliated, Logan looked up and saw shadows standing at the entrance of the locker room. Students. Peers. Watching.
And Jean.
She stood in the back, silent. Unmoving. Her eyes wide. Her lips parted in shock... but she didn’t step forward.
She didn’t say a word.
The silence cut more than the fists.
Logan tried to speak her name, but no voice came out. The world blurred. The shadows deepened.
And then...
