Chapter 147: Make Tonight Unforgettable

Then suddenly, a slow, wicked smile curled on Logan’s lips.

Jean narrowed her eyes. "What?"

He took a sip of wine, then set the glass down with a deliberate clink. "Maybe I’ll consider it..."

She blinked. "Maybe?"

He tilted his head, that mischievous glint turning dangerous. "If you make tonight unforgettable."

Jean nearly choked on her wine.

"There he is," she muttered under her breath, scoffing. "Brute Logan Kingsley."

He laughed. Actually laughed while shaking his head. That rare, deep chuckle that made her stomach flutter and her brain yell at her to stay composed.

"You brought up the power couple idea," he said, rising from his chair and strolling around the table like a wolf circling its prey. He stopped behind her, leaned down, voice brushing her ear. "I’m just asking you to demonstrate it... privately first."

She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop the heat blooming under her skin. "So that’s the deal?"

His lips hovered just above her skin. "Deal or not, you’re already thinking about it."

Jean turned slightly in her chair and gave him a look, cool and unimpressed. "And you’re awfully confident for someone who is going to sleep on the couch."

Logan grinned. "Tonight might change that too."

She picked up her wine and raised it toward him. "Cheers to deals and infatuation made in the dark."

He clicked his glass against hers, eyes never leaving hers.

"Power couple indeed."

The air between them thickened with unspoken tension.

Jean returned to her room after dinner, thinking she could escape the heat Logan had ignited with his teasing. But no. She barely had time to turn on the bedside lamp when she heard the door creak open behind her.

She turned... and there he was.

Logan stood at the doorway, eyes dark with something she couldn’t name. His shirt was now unbuttoned halfway, his jaw set with intent. Her heart skipped a beat. "Neither of us is sleeping on the couch tonight," he said, stepping in and closing the door behind him.

Jean blinked. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me." His voice was calm. Too calm. "One bed. One night. That was the deal."

She narrowed her eyes, arms crossing. "And what exactly are you expecting, Logan?"

He stepped closer. "Nothing you aren’t already thinking about."

Jean opened her mouth to fire back, but his hand gently reached up and brushed her cheek, tracing the line of her jaw. The tender gesture shut her up instantly.

Logan’s voice softened. "I’m not doing this just to win some stupid bet, Jean. I want to be near you. I want you next to me."

Her throat tightened. She hated how easily he disarmed her. How?

Still, she didn’t move.

So he stepped closer. "Tell me no... and I’ll leave. But tell me yes... and I’ll show you what it really means to sleep with your husband."

Something in her cracked. She really wanted to feel it again.

She stepped toward him, small, hesitant movements. Logan didn’t rush her. He let her close the distance between them. When her hands touched his chest, he exhaled, like he’d been holding his breath all night.

Then she whispered, "Stay."

And that was all he needed.

He crashed his lips to hers.

The kiss wasn’t soft. It was deep, raw, demanding. Her fingers curled around the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer. Logan’s arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her slightly off the floor as he guided her to the bed.

Their mouths never parted.

When her back hit the sheets, Logan hovered above her, his gaze searching her face. "Tell me to stop... Remember to say your safe word."

She didn’t.

Instead, her hands cupped his face and pulled him back into another kiss.

He didn’t rush. His touch was slow, reverent... like he was learning her skin, memorizing every inch. His lips trailed down her neck, then her collarbone, then lower... stopping just above the bandage on her shoulder.

He paused.

"You’re healing," he whispered.

Jean nodded, breathless. "I’m fine."

He kissed just beside it... softly, carefully... as if reminding her she wasn’t broken. That he would never hurt her.

When his hands roamed her body, Jean didn’t flinch. Not this time.

She welcomed it.

For the first time in years, she let herself feel wanted.

For the first time, she let herself feel safe in someone’s arms.

And maybe... just maybe... she wanted to give him an unforgettable night too.

Logan’s hand slid gently, reverently, down her side, trailing fire across her skin. Her breath hitched, her fingers clutched the sheets as his lips moved lower, exploring her like he had all the time in the world.

But just when his hands brushed the inside of her thigh... when he came dangerously close to the part of her she had never allowed anyone to touch... her body betrayed her.

Everything blurred.

In a flash, the heat of desire was smothered by the chilling grip of memory. That night. That man. That scream.

Her breath turned shallow. Her eyes widened. A wave of nausea rose up her throat.

"Stop."

It was barely a whisper, yet it hit him like a slap.

Logan’s hand stilled instantly. He looked up at her, confused. "Jean?"

"I..." Her voice cracked. "I’m sorry... I can’t do this anymore."

She sat up, her body trembling. Her skin, once flushed with heat, now pale and cold. A sheen of sweat clung to her brow. Her arms wrapped around herself, like she was trying to hold herself together.

Logan stared at her, blinking, trying to understand. He wasn’t angry. Not even frustrated.

But what stunned him was the look in her eyes... pure panic.

It wasn’t rejection.

It was fear.

His throat tightened. He slowly moved away, giving her space. His hands raised in surrender. He didn’t want to scare her more.

He sat on the edge of the bed, back to her, silence wrapping around them like a thick fog.

He should ask. He wanted to ask.

What happened to you, Jean?

But the words caught in his throat. He wasn’t sure if she was ready. If he was ready to hear it.

He moved to stand, to leave the room quietly and let her breathe, when a hand grabbed his arm... tight. Desperate.

"Don’t go," she whispered.

He turned slowly.

Jean’s eyes were wide and glistening with unshed tears. "Just stay here with me?"
