Chapter 126: HANNAH KINGSLEY... Ally or Foe?

"You look like the Jean Adams I used to compete with. Not the one hiding behind house walls and emotional landmines."

She bit the inside of her cheek. "I’m not hiding."

"I didn’t say you were," he said, his voice smooth. "But I know what it looks like when someone’s ready to fight again."

Then, just as she reached for the handle again, he added...

"Try not to miss me too much, wife."

That earned him a sharp side eye.

Jean scoffed. "I won’t. Try not to flirt with anyone while I’m gone, husband."

Logan smirked, unbothered. "Impossible. You took all the fun with you."

Jean rolled her eyes, hiding the twitch of a reluctant smile as she stepped out of the car.

The door shut.

Logan watched as she walked into the building... strong, tall, unbending.

He grinned to himself, whispering, "There she is."

The usual bustle in the lobby greeted Jean like a morning anthem. Clicks of heels, warm greetings, staff offering coffee, and a few surprised gasps followed by whispers of "Isn’t she Mrs. Kingsley now?"

Jean returned polite nods, her expression unreadable as she stepped into the elevator. Her mind was still tangled in Logan’s oddly gentle parting words, but she shook them off.

Work.

Focus.

That’s what she needed.

As the elevator doors opened onto her floor, Jean stepped out with purpose... ready to see Emma, debrief on missed meetings, and distract herself with deadlines.

But what she didn’t expect was... her.

There, seated comfortably beside Emma with a tablet in her hand and a focused look on her face, was a familiar figure.

"Hannah Kingsley?" Jean’s voice echoed in surprise.

Hannah looked up with a warm, sheepish smile. "Oh... Jean!"

Emma stood up quickly, "I was going to tell you, I swear!"

Jean blinked, glancing between the two women. "What are you doing here?"

Hannah stood up, brushing imaginary dust from her skirt, clearly trying not to seem too formal. "Logan said if I wanted to understand the real workings of the industry, I should learn from the best. So... here I am."

Jean’s brows rose.

"I requested to shadow you specifically," Hannah added quickly. "Not just because you’re Logan’s wife, but because I really admire how you built your brand. I hope you don’t mind."

Jean’s lips parted slightly in surprise.

But here Hannah was, looking genuinely sincere... nervous even.

Emma jumped in with a grin, "I’ve already given her a rundown. She’s been very professional all morning. And even I needed someone to share my work, Jean."

Jean let out a small breath and softened her gaze. "Well... welcome, then," she said. "Just know I don’t go easy on interns... even to the Kingsleys."

Hannah laughed gently. "I wouldn’t want it any other way."

Jean offered a faint but honest smile. "Good. Let’s see how well you survive your first day."

As she turned to enter her office, Emma leaned toward Hannah and whispered, "That went better than expected."

Hannah smiled. "She’s cool. I like her."

And just like that, the day began... with a new ally in the office Jean never thought she’d have.

Or what if she’s a foe in disguise?

Jean shut the door of her office with a firm click. The moment she sat down at her desk, she picked up her phone and dialed Logan without a second thought.

It didn’t even ring twice.

"You miss me already, Mrs. Kingsley?"

Jean didn’t even entertain the flirt. "Why is your sister in my office?"

A pause. "...Come again?"

Jean leaned back in her chair, one leg crossing over the other. "Hannah Kingsley. Your baby sister. She’s sitting with Emma right now, acting like she belongs here."

Another pause from his side. Longer this time.

"Okay, I did tell her to learn from the best... but I didn’t think she’d actually take me seriously. Two days ago, she was lounging around the house like a hopeless potato!"

Jean narrowed her eyes at the ceiling. "Yeah, well, the hopeless potato has now planted herself in my company."

"Look, I had no idea she was going to show up at your office. I swear. She didn’t say anything."

Jean wasn’t convinced. "Are you sure this isn’t another one of your father’s games? Sending her to spy on me?"

Logan groaned. "Jean..."

"I’m serious," she cut in. "I don’t know anything, Logan. You do something about her. I can’t exactly say no to her cute face, but this feels... off."

A long breath came through the receiver. "It’s not even 9 a.m., and you’ve already thrown two bombs at me."

Jean smirked, her voice sugar-laced with sarcasm. "Welcome to married life, darling."

"Fine, fine. I’ll call Mom and ask what the hell is going on."

Jean didn’t respond right away. She just stared at the glass walls of her office where Hannah and Emma were now laughing at something on the screen.

"In the meantime, be nice to her, okay?"

Jean sighed. "No promises."

Logan loosened his tie as he finally stepped into his office, the conversation with Jean still echoing in his ears. He tossed his phone on the desk, then immediately picked it up again and dialed his mother.

She answered on the third ring.

"Logan, sweetheart! Did you get my text about dinner next week..." Before Martha could complete Logan interrupted.

"Mom. Did you send Hannah to Jean’s office?"

A beat of silence.

"...To Jean’s office? What for?"

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "To work. She’s literally sitting with Jean’s assistant and shadowing Jean like a model intern."

Martha was shocked herself. "Wait... what?"

Logan sat down, disbelief coloring his tone. "You didn’t know?"

"Logan, the last thing she told me was that she was considering a beach holiday with her friends! I thought she was still in her lazy phase!"

Logan stared blankly at the wall, slowly lowering his phone. "...Oh."

So, it’s not another trick of his parents. Hannah is actually at Jean’s office to work?
