The Runic Alchemist
Chapter 655 - 655: The Dark War 50

If he could manage to use a wormhole through the open line of sight with the coin-sized hole, that would be the best possible outcome.

So days went by, and Damian spent most of them creating a copy or some alternate version of the decay spell he had been forbidden to use by the Elf Queen. Playing with the chaos element was really dangerous. Fire or water were not as deadly if one lost control of them while practicing spells—Chaos, however, was extremely dangerous if it touched human skin. Other than the weird simple ailments it caused if used without any specific spell, there were cases of poisoning, burning skin, becoming insane, and even losing eyesight and the ability to speak. Needless to say, there was a reason why the element had a bad reputation, and almost all spells related to it were banned and forbidden.

Both Lucian and Maelor had a record book of their own, in which they recorded what certain words while chanting truly meant for them. It wasn't widespread knowledge, but the noble circle kept such records and taught their children to do the same—not knowing the real reason behind it. Similar to their status, they were not supposed to show the book to anyone; it was their own personal thing. It wasn't a hard guess that it was somewhat related to creating original spells, but the kids didn't know how.

After some twenty-something days of this, Damian's effort to make a hole straight through the floor to see outside had still not shown any result. He had already transformed seven meters of the white substance by transforming the white solid structure into a slightly altered version of it, which turned it into white powder. It was still not through, though—the floor was at least seven meters thick, maybe more.

The chaos spell, however, had finally seen some success. It helped that Lucian and Maelor had no knowledge of the truth—that the chanting itself held no power, only the meaning they accepted in their mind did. Compared to Vidalia, who knew the truth, it was easier to progress with these two oblivious people. They did as he told them, thinking they were creating a spell truly by using the words from the chanting. But then again, no kid would spend years developing a single spell. Who had the patience?

He had to keep them away from each other, though—both had different vocabularies of chanting words and their relevant effects.

Unsurprisingly, Lucian was the one who finished the complete spell before Maelor did. She was impressive in her ability to differentiate each word of the whole chanting and followed his instructions to the point. Damian just had to tell them which word they associated with what effect, then make a dictionary of sorts, and then use relevant effects together to make a spell. The problem was, they did not associate all words with some effect. Mostly, the words held no effect for them, and only the whole phrases and chantings formed the runic spell.

He had to talk them into making up their minds and deciding with true meaning what each word they spoke meant. He, of course, did not phrase it as 'Just start imagining.' He had to be subtle and guide them so they would think they were truly figuring out how spells worked—instead of them making up things in their mind and him confirming it to solidify that belief for eternity.

Lucian launched the spell—it was the same as a fireball, but the element was chaos. It may be a simple spell, but it was anything but simple in making. It had similar sections as the matter-erasing spell Evrin's mother had shown him. It technically wasn't the same spell. Their aim was to replicate the matter-erasing spell to the point, but the spell-making was not as fast and efficient as Damian had hoped for. Lucian and Maelor were doing great—far better than any mage—but it was still not up to par. Vidalia, with her vast vocabulary and experience of making spells, was still much better in comparison when it came to creating unique spells.

Another problem was that both Maelor and Lucian had no affinity with the Chaos element. They had not even used the element much before. Creating a chaos fireball in 20 days was a major achievement.

When Lucian launched it—it exploded on contact, same as the fireball, but the main point of contact would burn in a brownish-grey fire for a few seconds. It left a bowl-sized crater on the white floor. A success.

They could destroy this place.

Lucian continued to use the spell on a daily basis. Maelor took a few more hours to finally reach the same point, but he too succeeded in making a similar spell. His was more like a liquid chaos flowing freely. Just like the water rune made a source of water above one's palm powered by one's mana—this too was the same, but instead of water, a reddish-tinted brown-grey liquid in small trickling form dripped down on the white floor as Maelor pointed his palm downward—it eroded the white floor slowly.

It was not as fancy as Lucian's, but it did the same damage as hers. Both had huge mana costs, and they had to constantly refill their mana pools. With only four elements, it was just half-full, so the progress was slow and they had to stop after doing it a few times to not abuse their bodies.

Damian thought he had to make the exact spell as the one the Elf Queen had shown, but the chaos element was so destructive they made something else—and it still did what they needed it to do. He could use both spells too, without any worry about breaking the mana contract, and he had a much bigger mana pool with greater tolerance for mana refill—so the digging down continued non-stop.

Maelor and Lucian joined him when they could—otherwise, all three just watched as the hole in the white floor got bigger and bigger with each passing hour.

Sam kept the records of how much time passed. From the beginning of their digging—or destroying, decaying, whatever one might call it—to the moment they finally broke through, it took a total of 57 days.
