Chapter 90: Chapter 89

Chapter 89

"Lorna." Melisca was trying hard to steady her voice. Her lips were trembling for the possibility that she wasn’t just assuming things. She had to ease her breathing.

"Yes?" Lorna’s voice from the back. She was still rummaging through for a movie on the shelf.

"Who’s--who’s this?" She failed to stop the tremble as she stuttered at the question.

Lorna sauntered her direction and stood close beside her. She stared at the picture. "Ah." There was a glow in Lorna’s face upon recognizing the woman. "That’s Aunt Melicia." Then the girl’s face was instantly shadowed by a hint of sadness. She took the frame from Melisca’s grip.

It was a good thing that Lorna took it because her hands started to tremble as shivers ran down her whole system.

"She’s mom’s younger sister." Lorna continued to explain.

Melisca’s mouth opened to breathe, to force the air in her body. She propped a palm on the table, leaning her weight on it as her strength left her.

"I met her once. When I just turned four years old." Lorna’s voice was calm and low, but there was grief in it. She grazed the face of Melicia with her thumb. As her memory went back to how she met the woman. Her eyes glazed while she was going down the memory lane. "I can’t remember everything. It was like a haze in my memory. Probably because I was barely four at that time. What I recall was that I was in the middle of the road when there was a car beeping, coming to me. But then, suddenly, someone wrapped their arms around me, and I was grabbed out of the way. Then she put me down. I stared at her face as she asked me questions if I was okay. I couldn’t speak. I was in shock, maybe. Then people called my name." Her brows furrowed, trying to strain her memory for more details after that. "There were men. Bodyguards maybe." She shook her head. "I don’t know. I’m not sure."

Melisca tried to close her mouth, but the air through her nose was never enough. Or more likely, it forgot how to function. She sucked breath through her mouth instead.

"Oh, and I didn’t know she was my aunt that time. I came to know when I was..." Her forehead knotted, trying to remember how old she was. "I think when I was nine. I saw this picture of her in the basement. I asked my parents who she was. Then my mom said she’s her sister, but then she warned me not to ask about her again. But I kept the picture. I told her I just want a full family picture in my room. She wanted me to throw it. But no. She was my savior." A moment of silence. Then Lorna continued. "Come to think of it..." She lifted the frame closer to her face. "You had the same eyes." There was a wistful smile on her lips.

"D-do you know what-what happened to her?" Melisca was breathless. She doesn’t mind anymore if Lorna notices her reaction. How she stuttered.

Lorna was having her own emotional turmoil from remembering things that she wasn’t supposed to know. She bit her lower lip before answering. "She died. That’s all I know." She shut her mouth and put down the picture. She didn’t mean to place it down with a slight thud, but her hand just became heavy. Sucking an air, she turned around and moved back to the DVDs. "It’s a sad story. Let’s cut it out."

Melisca remains frozen on the spot. Her lungs weren’t working anymore as it was constricted from lack of air. She needed to breathe. She needed oxygen. Her chest hurt, and her stomach churned. It was like her heart was melting inside her. It felt like it was cut open, and blood was gushing nonstop. Her healing ability couldn’t repair it fast enough. It was beyond healing.

She tapped her stomach. The breakfast she had eaten wanted to come out. "Where’s your restroom?" She was covering her mouth.

"That door beside the wardrobe." Lorna stood up from crouching down, inserting the DVD into the player. "Are you okay?"

She did not answer as she hurried to the restroom and locked herself inside. She went straight to the bowl and let go of the bile in her throat. A tear escaped her eyes as she vomited again. It was too much. Too much to process. To soak in her mind and accept the new knowledge. A newfound discovery of another family betrayal.

Melisca stayed there for more than a minute, hugging the toilet set. When nothing else wanted to come out, she stood up and went to the lavatory. She twisted open the tap and gurgled water in her mouth. Her chest was still burning. It was like the pain and the betrayal she already knew and bandage, the thread that she had sewn in her heart, was ripped open in an instant.

Her fists clenched as she leaned on the white marble. "Ah." She grunted as every heartbeat hurt. Both the cold and searing rage were colliding in her system. She had to get out. She needed to get out of there fast. Before she explodes and thrashes everything around, she would be found out. She would be revealed.

It was even hard to swallow her own saliva. Fuck! Breathing alone hurts. Every breath was killing her inside.

She felt the lavatory crumble a little. She jolted back immediately. It wasn’t safe for her to stay there. There was too much rage in her. The closed walls were tempting her to destroy them. She was about to erupt. Her eyes were even turning out of her control.

"Liz?" Lorna’s voice made her snapped her head at the door. "Are you alright?"

She bit her lip, gasping for air, for control. She felt feverish. "Yes." She growled. Her voice doesn’t sound human to her ears anymore. She can’t let Lorna find out her identity. At least not yet. And she doesn’t even know what to do with her if she opened the door and saw her face. The daughter of her killers.

Lorna was her cousin. They were cousins for fuck’s sake!

She’s my cousin. Goddammit!

She wanted to scream. To let out a howl. But she was in the worst place at the wrong damn time. She can’t just rush out and attack the girl mindlessly.

"Are you sure? What’s hurting you?"

She covered her ears by both hands, not to hear girl’s voice. She was frantically pacing back and forth. Oh, shut the up hell up before I break your neck!

She was beyond furious. And the girl was just outside. Knocking for her death. It was tempting. Very tempting. She wanted to give in in her impulse. Her hands were even shaking, thrilled to reach for it.

But she saved her. Her mother saved Lorna!

"Ah." She let out another exhale of pain. Her hands clutching her head. Her nails digging her scalp.

What should I do? Angry tears tumbled down her cheeks. I can’t take this. I can’t control this! She was already biting her tongue not to scream, not to howl in pain. She thought it was just an organization, a friend, an acquaintance from her mother’s side who were after them, who wanted to get her, but she was wrong. Fucking wrong. And they successfully killed her mother.

But then her mother’s family was also involved! They let her die! They wanted her to die. Her family. Her freaking sister. Her own blood!

She gasped for more air. Her hands wanted to break the wall, to punch the mirrors, to destroy everything around. But she stayed in the middle. She got to keep her hands to herself.

Her footsteps echoed but she was deaf and anger made her outer senses numb. She paced. Her hands clenching and unclenching. She finally fisted her hair at the nape and she screamed silently as she crouched down. Her scalp hurt from how she pulled at her hair. Better destroy her head done to lay a finger to anything around.

Vera came to her mind, Lorna’s mother. Melicia’s blood sister.

Why? Tears were falling on the floor. Why?! You were family! She’s your family! Her knees gave in and she fell on the floor. Why did you do it? How could you do it?!

It wasn’t just her father’s family who betrayed their own blood. Her mother’s side did the same.

And all these just because I was born? That I fucking existed? A chuckle came out from her. She bit her lip and shook her head for how absurd everything was. She’s only existing because she was dead inside. She was dead when she lost them both.

She remained sitting on the floor. Her knees close to her chest. She laughed silently as she sniffled. Another wave of hot tears escaped from her eyes.

"Liz! Answer me! Are you still alive there? If you won’t respond to me. I’ll be barging in." There was warning in Lorna’s voice.

The girl certainly doesn’t know that she was knocking at death’s door.
