Chapter 66: Chapter 65

Chapter 65

Melisca started to move, and her ears caught up with the conversations around her. There were whispers about her. She groaned inwardly. She can’t wave off their curiosity.

Lorna was shortly chatting with the receptionist, who was in a blue tight blazer and pencil skirt, hair styled in a tight bun. The whole lobby looked like a hotel lounge, except for the people that seemed out of place with the white dazzling glow and ambiance of the white walls and furniture.

"Portia, this is Melisca. My new friend." Lorna introduced them as she stood against the white marble desk that separated their area.

"Hi, Melisca." Portia’s eyes glowed with a sweet smile on her face before turning back to Lorna. "Where did you find her? Was she a fallen celebrity or something that wanted to get rid of her perfect face and taint her flawless skin?" She leaned closer to the desk, almost pushing half of her body out. That made Melisca pull her head back, as the woman’s face was only a few inches away from her. "Darling, I can see you have no open pores. You are in perfect condition. Are you here to replace me? I can accept you as my assistant. But I’m not going to back down in my position anytime soon." The receptionist’s eyes squinted at her in warning.

Melisca was just standing there, eyes wide, blinking at how the woman was perceiving her physically.

Lorna was laughing at the side. "Now, now, Madam Portia." She held the woman’s arm and finally retreated her body back to where she should stand properly. "My new friend wasn’t here for that position. And of course, I won’t be bringing anyone else to replace you. I can assure you that."

Then suddenly, the woman’s face turned bright as if she didn’t just threaten Liz a second ago. "Liz is here to train as a hunter." Portia’s jaw fell, and it seemed a storm was coming in her reaction.

"Don’t kid with me, Loriena." Her stern tone and looked at Melisca with a warm smile. "Liz? Melisca. I’ll call you Liz too. Are you sure that’s what you wanted?"

Even if she didn’t turn around, Melisca could feel everyone’s eyes burning at the back of her head. She wasn’t sure why anyone was able to hear their conversation. Maybe because of the closed walls that every sound can echo in the room.

She nodded to the woman. She could see that she was older than them. Portia was probably in her 30s. "Yes. That’s why I’m here."

"I don’t want that pretty face of yours to have a scar or even get a scratch. Such a waste." Portia was even shaking her head and clicking her tongue. "This is not a runway, dear. But anyway, you can’t go back now since you’re here and you already signed a contract, I presume. But I’m offering you a place with me here, behind a desk. Completely safe from all the blades and dirt."

"Can I take that offer? I had been asking for it ever since before. You know that." Lorna butted in.

"No, missy." Portia wiggled her index finger, gesturing a ’no’. With the other hand on the waist, she squinted her eyes at Lorna. "Your parents would have me fired if I tolerated your wishes. I can’t risk my position. You are young. You had a—"

"—Fine, fine." Lorna waved her hand off to stop the woman from talking further. "Let’s get started with the registration, please." She exhaled loudly in surrender.

"Okay. Your contract, please, my gorgeous girl." She offered her hand to Melisca.

She immediately took her backpack.

"Let me get it for you." Lorna volunteered to help.

She let the girl then since she already held the zipper and opened it. Lorna took out the slightly creased folder and closed her back before handing it to the receptionist.

"Come here, dear. We’ll have to take a photo of you and make your card so that you can enter all the rooms here." Portia gestured for her to the side, and they entered a room. Lorna was following behind them. "Kate, stand outside. I’d like to be the one to take care of this new face here."

There were a few people inside the room. Each was facing a computer and had their own desk. All were wearing a blue uniform. Everyone in the room landed their eyes on her. Some jaws had fallen.

"Will she be one of us?" A guy in the far corner asked.

"Not with us. With the hunters." Portia answered.

"Oh, that’s unfortunate." Disappointment was clear in his tone.

Some groaned in dismay. The other girls glared in her direction. She only gave them a cold look. She had grown to people’s insecurities against her. They entered another room. It had a glass wall.

That’s why anyone can see the other from both sides.

Lorna propped herself in one of the vacant seats that she found. She was friendly, but not all of them liked her. Well, she was a spoiled brat to everyone, mostly. And she wouldn’t deny that she didn’t act like one. But that was before she left the camp. Obviously, there was still bitterness in the hearts of many that she had a fight with for her bratty behavior.

They took a picture of Melisca and scanned her biometrics for her own ID. While it was in process, Portia led her to the side and took her measurements. After that, she allowed her to return to Lorna and sat beside her. Everyone kept glancing in their direction.

"Don’t mind them." Lorna mumbled, whispering to her side. "Most of the glares were for me."

She turned her head to her and lowered her own voice. "Why?"

"Well, I was too friendly." Then Lorna grinned.

Melisca knew that she was being sarcastic. But she can’t understand the situation enough.

"I was a brat before." The girl continued.

"How about now?"

Lorna instantly glared at her defensively. "I’m not. That’s all in the past."

She just nodded. Not wanting to tease the girl anymore.

"By the way, I noticed earlier you had a laptop in your backpack. That would be confiscated along with your phone."

It was her turn to be surprised. "What? Why did you just tell me now?"

"They will tell you before giving the card. It would be kept in a vault. Don’t worry, it’ll be returned to you once you are done in training and get out of here." Then she laughed remembering her foolishness. "Mine was still kept inside for I haven’t finished the training."

"How were you able to get out then?"

Lorna raised an eyebrow at that question. "Well, the benefit of being the daughter of the higher-ups." She grinned smugly.

And Melisca just understood why they didn’t like the girl. They were just insecure about her connections and background. She guessed Lorna was taken a bit more favorably because of her parents’ status.

"That’s why you also have your own room?"

"Not just that. Because this mansion was actually owned by my mother’s family. I have my private room upstairs." Lorna even gestured her index finger upwards, pointing to the ceiling. "And I also have my own quarters here."

A clearing of throat interrupted their whispering conversation. "Your card is ready, gorgeous dear, but I had to confiscate all your gadgets and we’ll have to see everything that was on your bag, including your weapons. Let us take a look of it as well. If there were no problem, then we’ll return them to you."

"Including weapons?" She repeated.

"Yes." Portia smiled sweetly. "The two on your waist and the other set in your boots."

Melisca wondered how did the woman know. But maybe from when she got her measurement. She gave her the backpack but on the second thought, she asked for her to ask one of the males in the area.

"This could be quite heavy for you, madam Portia."

She gave it to the guy who approached them but his eyes were on Melisca. When she handed her luggage to her, he immediately lost his cool and strained a bit of his muscles and looked at the other woman. "Good thing you called for me."

"Thank you for your concern, dear." Portia thanked her for the warning about the heavy load. "Bring that to the inspectors, Jared." She ordered to the guy. But before turning around, he gave Melisca a charming smile.

She gave him a blank stare and followed Portia. They entered the room they got in earlier.

A man handed Portia the card and eyed Melisca for a bit.

"Liz, dear. Listen, this card." The woman showed the card to her face. "Is your key access to all the facilities here. To the allowed facilities only. If you tried it in the wrong one, it won’t open for you then." She was slowly explaining things. "And, if you lost it, tell us immediately and we would find it by the computer. Only you can use your card for it had your fingerprint and it would be recorded all the time when you scan it everywhere. We can find wherever you are in this mansion, just always bring it with you. It’s for your safety as well."

Then she picked up the folder, which was the document Melisca handed her earlier, opening it and scanning again through some details on her.

"I was surprised that you had blades with you. But when I read some details on your documents here. I admit I was more shock to find out that such a pretty face could be deadly too." Then she looked up at Melisca again, closing the folder. "And I believe that’s the reason why Lorna found you a perfect candidate to be a hunter." Portia turned around and pulled the tray from the edge of the desk. There was a white cloth on spread on it. "Please put all your weapons here but unsheathe them first. And your phone or any gadgets you have."
