Chapter 48
Zek noticed the louder beats of her heart. It resonated in his ears. She was anxious. His question might have triggered it.
Laia was wishing that he wouldn’t ask that. How can she lie to him? Would it even work? Her heartbeat makes it obvious.
"Did you happen to stumble on someone on your benefit?" He rephrased the question as he threw the towel on his head to the table in front. Her response would answer some of his worries.
"Yes." She replied, head nodding.
So that explains the stench of some blood in Melisca’s clothes earlier. He knew it wasn’t hers. Laia’s behavior was obvious too. The girl had recognized the knife and was even curious enough about where it came from. He got a hint too that his mate asked for Laia not to say anything about her involvement. It was kind of heroic. But then, it was the hunters.
Melisca was indeed on the goal of eliminating his enemies too. He can’t say he’s not proud of her ways. She had the upper hand against the hunters. And unfortunately, maybe on him as well. She knew that he wouldn’t hurt her for being his mate.
"That’s good then." He brought back his attention to the present. "What happened to the hunters?" They were dead. Of course he knew that. Melisca wouldn’t give up on the chance. And he was glad that she did, for Laia had survived.
"I drank their blood and buried them somewhere in the forest." That’s the end of her explanation. Thankful that her lord did not press the matter about her savior. She takes it that he might know the woman. Or maybe he killed her after knowing what she was. That’s why he had one of her knives. Her fists clenched at the thought of what she’d suffered against his lordship.
"M-my lord." She was trembling, but her conscience was gnawing on her. "I was extremely curious about the knife you had. Please forgive me for asking this. Where did you get that knife?" With profound determination, she raised her head and glanced into his emerald eyes. A bit relieved that it wasn’t blood-red for the time being. He appeared unmoving.
"Now, Laia. Did your savior leave you a word?" He pulled his body from the back of the seat and leaned closer to the front, settling both elbows to his knees and propped his chin to the back of his entwined fingers.
It seemed like her lord indeed knew the mysterious woman. "Yes." Her short reply. But he kept looking at her. His eyes are curious. He wants her to elaborate more. "She said to forget about her in return."
"Then you should forget about the knife." Pushing his body back to the seat. Sighing, he announced as he rumpled his hair, a bit damp. "She’s fine, Laia." I’m the one who wasn’t.
The thought almost made him smile in irony. "Would you be able to fulfill her wish?""Yes, my lord." She crouched her head down in an instant.
"We should comply with that. This is the last time you’ll ask about her. Vanquish that curiosity." His last words before closing the topic.
********************
Melisca settled herself in a hotel room. She told Lorna that she was too tired for the night. She’ll go see her tomorrow. The room she chose had a bathtub, and for the worth of her money, she soaked herself in soothing, lukewarm water. She almost fell asleep in exhaustion.
The next day, Melisca woke up and called for a hotel service to reheat all the food she brought last night. Nothing had been spoiled, for she put them in the minibar to preserve.
It’s only 6:00 in the morning. On a day like this before, when she had no mission to accomplish, she’d spend the entire day sleeping or shopping for new clothes or equipment she’d need.
Sighing and rolling on the bed, she just remembered that she lost a knife. She needed a new one as soon as possible. One weapon would do, but two is better. And maybe she’ll have to make it four and put them to her sides so that it’ll be easier to draw without the need to crouch down to reach for her boots. Those were just extras then, whenever she had to.
She reached for her backpack beside the bed and grabbed the laptop inside. Connecting to the hotel wifi, the connection was fine. She searched for a store within the city where to purchase her weapons. She doesn’t want to go far, but if it’s not available, then she’d have to make extra effort to have it. Maybe drive to another city. Online purchase was not an option. It would arrive in days or weeks. That’s not convenient for her situation. And the item could be fake. That would be a total waste of money.
After a few moments, a knock sounded on her door. She stood up and glanced at the peephole. It was another service attendant with all her food in a tray. Upon opening, the girl looked up at her and greeted her with a big smile.
"Good morning, ma’am. Here’s." She halted and just stared at her openly, mouth slightly unclosed.
Melisca’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Do I have something on my face? The girl wasn’t even blinking. She seemed to be in a daze. She cleared her throat to wake her up. "Morning too. Thanks." She placed her palm underneath the middle of the tray, taking it from the girl, who was holding it in both hands.
"Your food." She at last completed what she was about to state earlier. Gulping and blinking a few times now with a blushing face. The girl exclaimed, "I’m sorry. It’s just, you’re extremely pretty!" Her cheerful and high-pitched voice reminded her of someone. Of course, no other than Lorna. She felt like that girl’s soul was everywhere. "You look like a model or are you an actress perhaps? But you’re more beautiful than them."
She shook her head. "No. Thanks again." She nodded to the attendant and gave her a tip before retreating inside and closing the door.
Melisca was used to compliments. At first, it was nice and blushing to hear. As time went by her former job, was beneficial at times, but then it brought her mostly to a disadvantage. The unwanted attention was too unnerving. Her face was disturbingly remarkable. Even if she wore a mask, her black obsidian eyes sparked curiosity and interest in some people. So, she doesn’t entirely consider having a pretty face as such a nice thing for her. Nothing she can do about it though.
There wasn’t even any scratch on her skin. Though it was highly beneficial to her, it was also quite bothersome if she got wounded with anyone around. She can’t control that ability. It was too dangerous for her. Also, one of the reasons she preferred working alone.
Her stomach rumbled. She placed the tray on top of the table and strutted back to the bed to fetch the laptop. She’ll eat while surfing the internet.
Thirty minutes later, she was sleepy and decided to get back to bed and she was off to dreamland instantly.
In another hour, she was woken by a ringtone. She forgot that she had a phone and to silence it. Yawning, her hand reached for it at the nightstand. The freezing temperature in the room because of the aircon made her pull the covers up to her head and answer the phone underneath.
"What, Lorna?" Her draggy voice.
"Good morning too, Lizzy!" There it goes again, that shrill tone. She had to keep the phone away from her ears whenever this girl called. She’ll have to take note of that. "You’re still in bed? Anyway, we need to talk so that I can elaborate to you more about the organization and what we’ll be doing next."
Melisca blinked her eyes multiple times to wake herself up. She pulled the blanket down and pushed the stray strands of hair that covered her face back to the top of her head.
"Can we do it later?" Her voice sounded lively now. "I have someplace to visit." She now sat down and leaned at the headboard.
"Where?" Lorna asked curiously. It was just an instinct of being nosy.
"I need to buy something." She answered. It wasn’t really a secret where she would go this time.
"Are you shopping? Can I go with you?" Melisca put the phone on the nightstand. She can hear her all right with her senses without even using the loudspeaker.
"I’m not shopping. Are you sure you want to ride with me again?" Closing her laptop, she stood up and then, returned it inside the bag. Then she remembered another thing to worry about.
"Still, can I tag along? And, I don’t mind. I might as well get used to it?" She can hear the cheekiness in her tone. She can imagine her being giddy in the other line. Seems like Lorna can be quite determined by unnecessary things.
But instead of answering, her mind got occupied. Where should she keep the album? The risk was unimaginable if she still had it with her. She’s adamant about leaving it to some vault storage in this city. Who knows the hunters were running the properties here and would put their noses on it to further evaluate her that they would go behind her back. She shook her head. No. She can’t have that. Leaving it to someone was tempting, but the problem was that she had no one. Her shoulders sagged. She can never be able to burn it. It was the only treasure she left of them. Seeing the happy years of her childhood.
Burying it somewhere could be an option too.
"Liz? Liz!" She flinched. Her thoughts had drowned Lorna’s voice in the background. "Are you fine in there?"
"Yeah. Sorry. I fell asleep." She fell in the depth of her thoughts rather. "Sure. You can come." She doesn’t even have any urge to oppose the girl anymore.
Closing the bag. She had decided. Bury it is.
