The Runaway Huntress -
Chapter 43 - 42
Chapter 43: Chapter 42
Chapter 42
Melisca felt the presence of a certain someone behind. Even though her senses went numb from the exploding emotions, his aura still prevailed. He was undeniably an alpha with the extreme atmosphere he brings. Then she flinched when he gathered his arms around her body. This warmth, comfort, and secure feelings reminded her of the family she once had. It exactly felt like she belonged. Another whining came out of her, and she felt his embrace tighten.
After a few moments in that position, she let out a comfortable sigh. The feeling of being safe in his arms was too overwhelming and could almost make her surrender to him. Just a few more seconds in his warmth wouldn’t hurt, but that could be a second to kill her if she let herself divulge in that pleasure.
She opened her eyes and escaped from his embrace. She managed to leap far from him in a few meters, her back facing him. Maybe that caught him off-guard that she freed herself easily, or he let her. Though feeling the pull towards him, she steeled herself not to give in.
"I can protect you." His deep, rich voice bombarded her ears with a sweet melody. It was tempting enough that she wanted to keep hearing it.
He did not move on his spot, though. She’s thankful that he kept his distance.
Protect her? Huh! She wanted to laugh at that. "I don’t need it." She stated firmly, tilting her face to the side. And she closed her eyes as she forced herself to say the next words. "And I don’t need a mate. I reject—"
"—Don’t!" In just a blink, he appeared right in front of her. But before she could see his full face, she jumped back to avoid confronting him head-on. Sprinting towards the trees, but this time, he caught up and held both her wrists in one hand above her head as she felt the tree bark touching her back.
She’s clearly no match for him, even if she forced all her strength to get free. She clenched her eyes shut not to see his visible face and turned her head to the side. All of a sudden, she was twirled around, and her body hit his hard chest, immediately aware of how physically fit and able he was. She was now facing the huge bark.
"You don’t even want to see my face." He mumbled in her ears. His breath tickled her. He didn’t even seem to be struggling to keep her still. Just how powerful is this man? That made her quit moving since it was pointless. "I don’t look bad." His tongue even grazed her skin, and she shivered at that. "I’m offended."
"I don’t care." She had to hate the things that he made her feel. She can’t submit to them.
Ezekiel was flushed with a lot of feelings inside him. He had her in his arms again, but not like this. He doesn’t want to keep forcing himself on her. Then he smelled blood in the air. It came from her. "Stop it. Don’t hurt yourself." He demanded, but it fell on deaf ears. He let her go then and moved a few steps away if that’s what she wanted. She bit her tongue. It caused her to bleed. It won’t kill her, but he can’t bear it when she’s hurt. It brought out his being protective. And she’s using that werewolf instinct for their mate.
He laughed sarcastically. Smart move. "That’s clever, mate." He mumbled, clenching his fists to his sides. How he wanted to just hold her.
"Don’t call me that. I don’t want to be your mate. I want to—"
Melisca flinched when he appeared behind her again, and he slammed the tree with his hand. The vibration shook her and the tree. Some leaves had fallen, and the birds with other creatures nearby scampered away. She swallowed hard.
He clenched his fist at the tree and moved his body closer, but he managed to keep an inch before her. She was so close. Her warmth and body were drawing him to dominate her right then and there. He closed his eyes, teeth gritting. "Don’t." He let his jaw touch the side of her head. "Don’t reject me." He had to get his priorities straight. "Or I might have to kill you." He needed to change his tactics to make her listen.
Upon hearing that from him, her heart thudded louder. He’s no different from them then. To the people who wanted to end her very existence. "Because I shouldn’t have been born?" She sighed to let out another pang of pain. It was boiling fresh and creating another hole in her soul. Her knees wanted to give in, but she controlled herself not to appear weak.
"Because you wouldn’t stop killing my people."
"Your people killed my parents. I’m just doing them justice."
"Who were they? Tell me their names, and I’ll punish them." He snaked his free arm around her torso, closing the inch between them.
That made Melisca’s head turn to the side. Not minding that he was holding her again. "Would you really do that? Would you kill your own people for me?" She asked in ridiculousness as she touched his arm to release her. It made her flinch as she somehow felt the pleasurable current flowing to her body.
Ezekiel paused for a second. Can he take the lives he vowed to protect? But if they were really at fault for her parents’ deaths, then they deserve the punishment.
"I can. If their crimes were proven. And you had to stay by my side. You need to stop this."
And that broke her trance to believe him. "Let go of me!" She thrashed and Zek let her. She sprinted out of her spot and stopped a meter away from him. "I would never stop unless I take the lives of those who took of my parents’." She said indignantly. And she may not just stop there until she wipes out the family of those murderers.
She stared at his back, at his figure. He was quite tall. His broad shoulders, muscled and firm physique were every girl’s dream. His jet-black hair was shining under the moonlight, it seemed so soft that she wanted to reach for it to tangle with her fingers. She was curious about what he actually looked like but she turned around and stopped herself, it was better not to put a face of the man that she was bound to keep her distance. To lessen any distractions.
"Will you really join forces with the hunters? Do you really want me to be your enemy?" Zek can’t stop to ask that question. How can he make her side with him?
Melisca already knew that she was no match against the man. He is an alpha. That made him have a whole lot more incredible power than an ordinary wolf.
"I am on no one’s side." She can feel his hot gaze at the back of her head. "Both humans and wolves took each of my parents." She heard him rustling but did not take any step towards her.
"So, you want to take both alone?"
His voice sounded muffled. Did he put on a mask?
"That’s the plan. Yes." She fled and sprinted towards the cabin. He followed her without a sound. "What did you do to my knife? It felt different."
She stepped up the small stairs and pushed the door open. Someone else clearly maintained the place for there was only a faint smell of dust. And there was some chopped wood at the side of the fireplace. Whoever that is, they really made themselves completely welcome to even use this cabin for shelter. She moved to the kitchen, and next to the bedroom upstairs.
Zek waited outside patiently. Melisca didn’t even wait for him to answer her question before stepping in.
"I had it blessed to penetrate through magic." He answered anyway, knowing she would be able to hear him even from a distance.
"I don’t need a blessing like that." Came her reply.
"It may come in handy someday."
"Do you also have it tracked?"
He sighed, didn’t want to answer.
"Don’t lie."
"Yes."
"Take it back. It’s my favorite knife. I don’t want to throw it away so take it back."
She was now out of the cabin. The large full moon was in clear view from the mountaintop. It gave a light glow to the surroundings. Then another set of howls echoed. She decided to get back to her parents so she sprinted to their grave. The man on her tail.
"Leave me alone already and go to your people before I follow their sound and ambush them." She threatened.
"You’re also killing innocent lives." Zek observed her a few steps away.
"These lives were also innocent, yet they took them. I was just a child and they thought of me as a monster already. Why do they have to do that? Why do they want to kill me when I have done nothing wrong?!" She exclaimed.
"It won’t bring them back." His hard tone resonated in her ears. "No matter even if you finish them all, it would change nothing." Those words pushed her rage button again. She couldn’t control herself and finally faced him head-on. She used all her might and pushed him to a tree, her hand to his throat.
He didn’t even make a sound from the impact of her strength. He just stared at her. And her grip loosened upon seeing his eyes. It didn’t just look amused, the shape of a crescent moon in it was pooled by a burning red.
"W-what are you exactly?" It was the first time she heard herself stutter in confusion or could be fear.
