Chapter 429: One Ring
Chapter 429: One Ring
Ira did not think that today would be anything special for someone like her.
At best, she’d hoped for a glimpse of greatness—something to remember, something to fangirl about later. But like always, she figured she’d be content looking, smelling, and imagining from afar until one day an unexpected gift from the heavens landed on her plate.
A giant golden hoop.
It gleamed in all its glory, and she could’ve sworn it would’ve passed as a mythical artifact.
But the bigger question was why said artifact was now sitting on her tray, garnering looks from practically everyone, including the instructors who had also been craning their necks to see better.
"Y-your Highness, wha-what is this?" she asked, voice nearly a whisper—as if naming it too loudly would result in a catastrophe. "And why is it on my tray?"
They wouldn’t frame her for stealing something so valuable, would they?
But Ira couldn’t really think about that since the Princess may have been overbearing, but she had always been a great sister-in-arms.
"Lady Ira, I bestow this to you with permission from our leadership, for your contribution toward moving mountains that had been stuck for a long time."
"???"
Mountains?
Stuck?
Contribution?!
Ira hadn’t even gone outside, always stuck staring at her terminal or using the virtual pod, so what kind of mountain did she move???
The surprise and confusion were visible on her face, and Ada thanked nature that her Royal Highness did not elaborate on how her fanfiction, "I Thought He Was Just My Roommate," had managed to help their guild leader when push came to shove.
Also, the aide could only be glad that the princess only asked if she could share a bit of her food, instead of telling Lord Luca that she would be out there rewarding a fanfiction writer.
However, she figured she’d have to say something or Ira might end up asking for a detailed explanation.
"Lady Ira, your most recent work was greatly appreciated, and so Her Royal Highness has decided to bestow this upon you as a token of our thanks. It’s an onion ring."
"Princess Kira, Lady Ada, are you serious? Thi-this is for me?"
"Yes, please enjoy it to your heart’s content."
But then Ira looked at all her other friends, and her heart thudded because they looked at her with gleaming, pleading eyes.
And she almost gave in.
Thankfully, she didn’t have to offer up her future because the Princess said, "As for the others, your efforts were also commendable, so for that, here is the biggest piece I have; you could equally divide these amongst yourselves."
They were ecstatic. And was even more surprised when Ada decided to add to the prize by offering her largest onion ring so they could share more.
And one best believe that this garnered the attention of more people after realizing that seven regular cadets would actually be able to get a chance to taste the rumored food of the gods.
Honestly, Ira felt like it was all in slow motion as she felt her back sweating from all the stares. And yet she stood, more like sat her ground, guarding the artifact with her life before she gave in to its call.
Crunch!
Her pupils dilated.
And for a second, she forgot her name. Forgot the concept of restraint. She forgot war, sorrow, centralized exams, and how she was being observed by nearly every soul around.
What remained was that sudden explosion of something in her mouth that’s got her heart beating and her blood rushing.
She blinked down at it like it had personally changed her life.
Oh.
Wow.
"Ira? Is everything alright?" worriedly asked one of the girls who also had her share of an onion ring in front of her.
The skeptics were watching like vultures, wanting to drag DG after someone else finally got to taste whatever that was that they were using to bait everyone.
But then Ira wiped the side of her eye with her wrist before murmuring, "Guys...I-I don’t know what I did right. But if I had to do it all over again, I swear I’ll fight tooth and nail for another chance at this."
"And I advise you to plan each bite," she added, looking at each sister with a very serious face.
Gasps, murmurs, and whispers sounded everywhere as the six other girls gulped before taking their first shaky bite.
Knees suddenly clutching tight, backs immediately straightening, and one even gasped so hard people thought she’d had a medical emergency.
But no.
Ira was just right.
Though when the spiritual energy from the food finally seeped out into their bodies, the women looked at each other, then at the Princess.
"!!!"
"Don’t panic," The Orc princess said calmly. "Just imagine slowly circulating it through your body."
Princess Kira figured this was going to happen, and from the side, she watched as Kyle gave her a small nod.
And maybe this would get them talking.
Sure did. The effect was immediate.
Because now even the instructors, especially the physicians, wanted to run over to check. Unlike the other students, they could see all those spiritual goods as if they were shining gems.
But when they realized how intently Instructor Jin was observing, the others, such as Instructor Falco and Moore, could only follow, shifting their investigative gazes from the girls to a group of boys.
Then they saw something that made their jaws almost drop as they realized the immense amount of highly concentrated spiritual energy contained within those metal boxes. They’d been blocked by so many heads earlier that only now could they really see what those metal boxes were all about.
It took a moment, but eventually they realized who was in charge of these cadets; the instructors all looked at Instructor Falco like he was supposed to know something about it.
However, the poor guy knew nothing.
Not only did he face a demolished wall and an almost duel this morning, but now he had to explain why his students would have items that could call upon the federation, the pirates, or even the Imperial family.
And it was only lunchtime.
These guys still had the afternoon to send their instructor into seclusion.
After all, they still had their pilot training and a chance to show the growth of students who eat and enjoy their vegetables daily.
However, that would be for a bit because one would still have to pacify the bidding, begging, and bargaining that suddenly started in the cafeteria.
And all of it was documented in the forums:
[To that person who offered to bid their sibling, please check yourself in. We’re not sure how valuable your sibling is, so that couldn’t be counted.]
[HAHAHAHA! Someone offered their sibling?! That’s a funny joke!]
[If only.]
