The Return Of the Invincible Heiress -
Chapter 82
Chapter 82: Chapter 82
Avery looked up at Alexander and said seriously, "I may be young, but I’m not afraid of anything." She clenched her fists and added, "I’m very capable."
Alexander smiled, his eyes as gentle as the spring breeze. "Yes, I know you are very capable." Then, he lowered his eyes and played with the stone cup. His eyes became deep, and his voice grew low.
"Fifteen minutes before my sister was hit by the truck, I received a call from an unknown number. The processed voice told me that if I went to Lucy as quickly as I could, I might still see her one last time. I called my sister, but the signal was bad, and I couldn’t get through. Luckily, it was already midnight when I received the call. The roads in the city were empty, which allowed me to speed toward the suburbs. I called my doctor friend along the way too."
Alexander paused before adding, "The truck driver had explosives strapped to his body. He was waiting for me to show up."
It had been years since the accident, so Alexander was able to recount it calmly. "When I grabbed the truck driver, he acted like a madman. He laughed and said that everyone was doomed. I heard the timer on his body and threw him out at once. At the same time, I suspected the truck was also rigged with explosives. Because of my timely response, we survived."
Avery was silent. It sounded very simple, but the situation at that time must have been incredibly dangerous. If Alexander had been a second slower, they might all have died.
Alexander continued, "I’ve been investigating the car accident for the past five years. It took me a long time to find any clues. The truck driver was a gambler. He owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in gambling debts. He divorced his wife a few days before the incident and left on his own. Before he died, he paid off all his gambling debts and sent a bag of gold bars to his wife and children. I couldn’t find out where he got his gold bars. His wife didn’t know anything either. That’s where the trail ends. However, my great-uncle sent this video to me last night."
Alexander then recounted his conversation with his great-uncle in detail. Finally, he said sincerely, "I’ve tried to analyze the video, but it’s difficult for me to stay calm. Every time I see my sister’s miserable condition and how my friends and I almost died in the explosion, I can barely breathe. That’s why I want you to help me analyze this video and see if you can find any new clues."
Avery was curious. "You must know many experts. Why don’t you ask them to help you?"
Alexander looked at Avery deeply. His voice seemed to come from the depths of his soul. "Because I don’t trust them. Miss Carter, you’re the only one I want to confide my secrets in."
Avery felt her heart skip a beat as her gaze met Alexander’s. Something surged within her, eager to rise to the surface.
A moment later, Alexander said in a low voice, "If these videos are leaked, it will cause an uproar. It will be extremely disadvantageous for my sister and me."
There was no need for Alexander to explain. Avery understood. Once the videos were leaked, it would shock the world. Alexander and Lucy, as well as all the suspects who had the motive and ability to commit such an act, would be investigated. It would cause a conflict between their family and business, leading to a crisis as the public and shareholders lost their trust in the Moran family and the Moran Group.
At the same time, as victims, Alexander and Lucy would still be held accountable for not reporting the accident and deceiving the public. Most importantly, the truck and the truck driver were blown to pieces on the spot and didn’t leave any clues behind. After five years, it was impossible for the police to find the murderer. Thus, this matter could only be investigated in secret.
Avery was touched by Alexander’s trust. She nodded. "Alright, I’ll give it a try."
Her reaction made Alexander feel a little guilty. He was speaking from the bottom of his heart, but he had selfish motives too.
"Miss Carter," Alexander said, "I hope my request isn’t difficult for you, nor does it inconvenience you..."
"It’s alright. I want to investigate it," Avery interrupted. Her eyes flashed with a fanatical light. She clenched her fists and said very seriously, "I’m very interested in this case. Everyone should play their part in upholding justice."
Alexander smiled. His eyes were slightly curved, his teeth were white, and even his bald head shone more.
"Miss Carter, you’re so cute."
Avery blushed and quickly found a topic to cover her shyness. "But now that your sister survived and returned, will the murderer make another attempt on her again?"
"Maybe," Alexander smiled faintly. "I’m not afraid of the murderer making a move. I’m more afraid that the murderer won’t do a thing."
Avery understood what he meant. "That’s true."
After that, she continued to study the video. Her eyes were unblinking as her fingers occasionally swiped on the keyboard. She first looked at the important parts. She was like a straight-A student who had just encountered an interesting problem she had never seen before. She would not be satisfied until she solved it.
Alexander played with the cup and watched her quietly. It was said that one was the most attractive when working seriously. It was the same for both genders. The evening breeze blew across their cheeks. There was a hint of heat in the coolness and a hint of restlessness in the silence.
Half an hour later, Avery looked up. "I’ve mostly finished watching it. Perhaps I can give it a try." She quickly gave her preliminary conclusion. "You and your great-uncle have investigated the truck, the truck driver, the murderer who called you, and the person who sent the video to your great-uncle. None of them provided any clues. The only lead is the drone.
"This video was taken between two and four in the morning. This drone was able to capture such clear video from high up and from a distance. It could also be operated with precision and has a long battery life. This was not an ordinary drone, but it was not a military drone either."
"Military drones don’t make that much noise. Civilian drones like that are not common in the market. It is indeed a clue."
A look of admiration appeared in Alexander’s eyes again. "Great minds think alike. Miss Carter, you are indeed a genius. I have a feeling you are my lucky star again."
Avery smiled broadly. Her eyes shone with enthusiasm. "Can you send this video to me? Don’t worry, I won’t let anyone else see it." She added, "I promise there won’t be any more accidents this time."
"Of course," Alexander nodded. "No matter what you do, I will support it."
Avery blushed slightly. "It’s half past eight. I should go back. I’ll tell you when I have some clues."
Avery was extremely eager. It had been a long time since she had encountered such a challenging case. Lockwood finally had a job.
Alexander smiled. "Alright, I’ll send you back."
Avery pointed out sternly, "You had alcohol just now."
Alexander nodded. "So you’ll have to drive us."
Avery blinked in shock. He was sending her back, but she got to drive? She couldn’t believe his logic.
However, she was very gentlemanly and refused to argue with him over such a small problem. Thus, she drove Alexander home while Louis followed them in Alexander’s car. It felt weird.
When they reached the entrance of her neighborhood, Alexander did not enter. He got out of the car at the entrance and watched Avery disappear before getting into his car.
After the car started, Alexander crossed his arms and looked out the window. He said indifferently, "I promised to give Miss Carter a gift the week before last. Have you found him?"
Louis, who was driving, said, "Yes, we found the target. But the rat bastard is sly and excels at hiding. We’re attempting to capture him now. He’s a sitting duck. He’ll be caught soon."
"Hurry up," Alexander closed his eyes. "I don’t want to delay what I promised her."
"Okay, sir."
Louis observed his boss from the rearview mirror. He was quite satisfied with his boss’s performance tonight.
After Avery entered the living room of the annex building, she heard voices coming from the main hall. It seemed that there was an eager discussion going on. After some thought, she walked over via the corridor to see what they were talking about.
Wesley’s voice was a little unconvinced. "What’s wrong with opening a restaurant in Bard Garden? I can pick you up every day and save you a lot of time. Also, our company is currently having discounted rentals and sales. Regardless of whether you rent or buy, you can get a discount."
"I can help you with the renovation too. When I’m free, I can go to the restaurant to help. What do you not like about that?"
Arthur sat cross-legged on the sofa. As he played games on his phone, he said, "I stayed in that area for years. I don’t want to stay there any longer. Besides, that place is too far from home. I’d like to work somewhere closer to home with Mom."
"The consumption level in that area is relatively low too. If you open a restaurant there, you can’t set the price high. The profits are limited. I don’t want my mother’s fine cooking to earn peanuts."
Maria also pointed out, "Mom’s cooking is delicious. It’s much better than the internet-famous restaurants and well-known restaurants I’ve been to. I hope Mom will take a more high-end route instead of relying on high sales volume to maintain profitability."
Claire said, "Arthur and I have been to many places lately. There are suitable shops nearby, but the rent is too expensive. Although Wesley has found a good job, home expenses have also increased. Moreover, Wesley’s job hasn’t stabilized yet. It’s still too risky for us to rent such an expensive shop now. Why don’t we open a small restaurant at Bard Garden first? After saving up, we can consider opening a restaurant nearby."
"Open a restaurant?" Avery’s heart skipped a beat at that thought as she walked into the living room. "What kind of restaurant do you want to open, Mom? Maybe I can help."
Everyone waved at Avery. "You’re here, Avery. Sit down. We only need your opinion now."
After Avery sat, Arthur moved the plate of fruits to her. "Avery, have some fruits. They’re very fresh."
"Thanks," Avery smiled. She picked a slice of fruit with a fork and ate it slowly.
Claire sighed. "I want to have a lot of autonomy in the restaurant. I don’t want to follow the customers’ opinions all the time. I want to cook whatever I want and do whatever I want. I don’t want to work long hours. I want time to stay at home and eat with family. But no restaurant operates so freely."
Avery asked curiously, "Mom, you seem to know a lot about opening restaurants?"
"Of course!" Wesley patted his wife’s thigh and said proudly, "Avery, you don’t know, but your mother’s restaurant was very popular in the past. It was even selected as one of the best diners in Rosemont City. Many leaders and celebrities ate there."
Avery’s interest was piqued. "Tell me about it, Dad."
Claire pinched her husband’s thigh and said angrily, "It was many years ago. What’s there to talk about?"
Wesley said, "Of course, there is. How can we not let the children know how capable you were in the past?"
He turned to the children and started, "Your mother learned to cook when she was three years old..."
Arthur immediately shouted, "Dad, last time you said Mom started cooking when she was five."
Wesley glared at Arthur. "She learned to cook at the age of three and could cook on her own at the age of five. Is there a problem? Children from poor rural families, especially girls, learn to do housework when they’re young. At four, they have to care for farm animals. At five, they have to care for their younger siblings. It’s very normal."
Maria nodded vigorously. "Yeah, it’s really like that."
