The Return Of the Invincible Heiress -
Chapter 78
Chapter 78: Chapter 78
Avery disapproved of Lucy staying in Valemont City. Valemont City was too chaotic, so it was not suitable for Lucy to recuperate.
"No." Alexander smiled. "I’ll send her away tomorrow morning. I definitely won’t let the Moran family find her."
Avery felt that Alexander was indeed very smart. "I also think that is better for your sister."
Silence fell again. Avery pursed her lips and puffed up her cheeks. The feeling of wanting to tell Alexander about many things but not knowing what to say rose in her again. She felt a little uncomfortable holding them in.
A few seconds later, Alexander’s low voice sounded. "Miss Carter, thanks for what happened tonight."
Before Avery could answer, he added, "It’s my honor to meet you. I need to go now. Good night."
With that, he hung up. Avery reminisced about Alexander’s low and magnetic voice. It felt like a breeze on a summer night. It crept in through the gap in the curtains and surrounded her, caressing her gently. It made her tingle with sweetness and contentment.
After the call, Alexander returned to his usual indifference. He walked back to the entrance of the building and looked at the black car that was slowly approaching. The black car stopped in front of him. A tall woman with long black hair, a white dress, and a mask got out. She grabbed his sleeve and followed him into the building.
The door of the building closed. The tall, slender woman never left. This scene was seen by the people watching Alexander secretly.
On the other side, Avery waited for her heart to calm down. She walked out of the room and glanced at the room diagonally opposite. It was almost 10:30 pm. She wondered why Maria wasn’t back yet. After some thought, Avery called Maria.
The background noise on Maria’s side was very lively. It sounded like she was at a diner.
"Maria, where are you now?" Avery asked. "Do you want me to pick you up?"
"No need," Maria hurriedly said. "I’m having supper with a reliable friend outside. I’ll be back later. I’ve already told Dad and Mom. You don’t have to worry."
When Maria finished, Avery heard a young man’s voice from the other end of the phone. "Hello, you’re Maria’s sister, right? I’m Maria’s friend. Maria interviewed for three jobs today. One of them lasted late, and she didn’t have time to eat dinner. I happened to be shopping nearby and treated her to supper.
"She’s tired now, and she’s had some beer. I wanted to send her back, but she said she’d moved. She wouldn’t tell me where she’s living now and insisted on riding her motorbike back."
Avery made a prompt decision. "Tell me where you are. I’ll pick Maria up now."
The young man said politely, "Freeman Road, Seafood Nest."
Avery thanked him, picked up her car keys, and left. Freeman Road was a little far from their house. However, there was no traffic now. Avery would be able to make the trip to and back quickly.
Twenty minutes later, Avery arrived at Seafood Nest. When she got out of the car, she saw a young man supporting Maria and waiting at the entrance of the diner. When the young man saw Avery, his eyes lit up. He smiled warmly and said, "Hello, I’m Maria’s friend. Are you Maria’s sister? Thanks for picking Maria up."
Avery frowned. She was too familiar with the way the young man looked at her. She could tell what he was thinking at a glance. However, she did not show any displeasure. She only said politely, "Thanks. I’ll help Maria into the car now."
Maria seemed to have drunk too much and was a little dizzy. After greeting Avery, she continued to close her eyes like she could fall asleep on her feet.
The young man quickly said, "I’ll help you." He very gentlemanly helped Maria into the passenger seat with Avery. He even thoughtfully fastened Maria’s seatbelt. Avery noticed that other than stealing glances at her, the young man also took the opportunity to size up her car. He secretly touched it, his eyes filled with envy. Avery felt that her precious car had been tainted.
After Maria’s seatbelt was fastened, Avery said, "Careful, I’m going to close the door." Then, she closed the car door and almost slammed it on the young man’s hand.
The young man shook his hand with lingering fear. "Maria’s motorbike is still here. Shall I follow you on it?"
Avery shook her head. "No need."
Avery grabbed the front of the motorbike and the seat right before the onlookers gawking at her beauty. She easily lifted the motorbike onto her shoulder. At least the motorbike wasn’t too big and could fit into the trunk with some maneuvering.
There was a round of exclamations and applause.
"Wow, she looks delicate and frail but turns out quite buff," a man exclaimed.
"The motorbike should be quite heavy. Even a man might not be able to lift it. This pretty lady is amazing," another added.
"Miss, can I add you on iMessage?" a voice said.
"Miss, do you want to be a celebrity?" a woman questioned.
The young man wanted to help Avery carry the motorbike, but when he saw this, his eyes widened and he did not react for a long time. Avery took the opportunity to say "thank you, goodbye" to him before getting into the car and driving away.
After returning home, Avery made Maria a cup of coffee. Maria quickly woke up and said embarrassedly, "Avery, sorry to trouble you tonight."
"It’s nothing," Avery shook her head. She thought for a moment and said, "Are you very familiar with the guy who treated you to supper?"
"You mean Dwayne Nelson?" Maria supposed. Maria’s cheeks were slightly red. Her eyes darted around as she said in embarrassment, "He’s a hairstylist from the hair salon opposite the coffee shop where I used to work. He’s a very nice person and takes good care of me."
Avery blinked and thought, ’So Dwayne is a hairstylist. No wonder he’s such a charmer.’
"How is he nice?" Avery asked, only half-joking. "Tell me about it."
Maria hesitated for a moment before speaking in a low voice, "When he’s on duty alone, he often takes the time to trim my hair. Everyone says my hair is very well trimmed."
Avery looked at Maria’s slanted bangs and nodded. "Yes, your bangs are indeed quite beautiful. It suits your face shape."
"I think so too." Maria was happy when she heard that. Her face lit up. "Dwayne often brings us delicious food. He also gives me useful suggestions on how to match hairstyles and clothes. The first few times someone went to the coffee shop to take photos of me, he helped me block them."
Avery listened quietly and did not interrupt. Maria continued, "Because I quit my job suddenly at the coffee shop this time, the shop said they couldn’t pay me. I was also too embarrassed to ask for it. After Dwayne found out, he went to my shop to help me fight for my pay. That’s why the manager decided to pay out."
"I received the money from the manager this afternoon. Dwayne even messaged me to ask me if I received the money. I’m very grateful to him." Maria blushed again. "I’ve been working for two years. Dwayne takes care of me the most."
Avery smiled, "How much money did the coffee shop give you? You have to treat me to coffee."
Avery was almost certain that such a stingy shop would not pay Maria. It was very likely that Dwayne gave the manager money and asked him to transfer it to Maria in the name of a ’salary.’ Maria was so grateful to Dwayne. She would be even more touched when she found out Dwayne was the one who gave her the salary in the future.
