The Return Of the Invincible Heiress -
Chapter 249
Chapter 249: Chapter 249
At ten o’clock at night, Avery received an unexpected call.
Joy called her and said politely, "I love the novel Lockwood’s Detective Diary. I want to play the role of Lockwood, and I believe I can play this character well. I’d like to ask if you could sell me the film rights to the novel. Of course, you name the price, and I won’t negotiate."
Avery shook her head and said, "You’re a step too late. I’ve already confirmed the cast."
Joy was surprised. "Can you tell me who you’ve decided to cast as Lockwood?"
Avery did not hide it. "It’s Luna. I had a serious discussion with her. Her love and understanding of the character earned my approval, and I believe she can play Lockwood well."
After a few seconds of silence, Joy said objectively, "Luna is indeed an outstanding actress. I admire her professionalism and acting skills too. But don’t you think she’s a bit too old to play Lockwood?"
Avery did not let her emotions affect her decision. She told her in a serious tone, "I’ve thought about this issue seriously as well. Luna is twenty-nine this year, but she takes good care of herself. She’s been in great shape lately. There’s likely no issue with her playing a university student who’s ten years younger."
"With the current makeup and filming techniques, it’s not unreasonable for an actress to play a character ten years younger. But I’m the same age as the character and also a university student. I hope you will give me a chance to compete with Luna to see who is a better—"
"You’re not suited for this role." Avery shook her head. "You’ve lived overseas for a long time. The environment you grew up in is too different from Lockwood’s. You lack that pure and wild quality that she has from growing up locally."
"If you don’t let me try, how would you know I can’t portray those qualities?"
"No, I know you can act," Avery said. "I just prefer the style of Lockwood that Luna brings."
Joy took a deep breath. "You haven’t signed a contract with Luna yet, right? I’ll send you some clips of my performance. If you think I act well after watching them, I hope you can give me a chance."
Avery smiled. "Alright."
After ending the call, Joy suddenly thought of a question while sending Avery clips from her starring films.
She thought, Why wasn’t Avery surprised at all when she knew I wanted to play Lockwood? How come she even thought I could act well? Her normal reaction should have been to ask, "You’re a history major, so how come you suddenly want to act in a TV series?" Could it be that Avery has long learned that I’ve acted in films?
At this point, her expression darkened, and her eyes glinted.
She wondered how much Avery knew about her.
She hoped Avery was smart enough to know what could be done and what couldn’t.
After receiving the film clips sent by Joy, Avery immediately deleted them without leaving a trace.
Then, something occurred to her. She walked out of the annex to the main building to see Zayn.
At this point, Zayn was wearing a tank top and shorts as usual, doing plank exercises in the backyard. His body was as straight as a line, perfectly parallel to the ground.
When he saw Avery, he did not move. He merely smiled gently and said, "Avery, still not going to bed yet, huh?"
Avery squatted down beside him, rested her chin on her hands, and said cutely, "Zayn, I’m preparing to write the scripts for the TV series Lockwood’s Detective Diary. The script for TV series has to be relatable, with richer content and more well-rounded characters. So, I want to pair the female lead with a detective who has high combat skills and is not talkative but very action-oriented. You play this character, okay?"
"This role is indeed a good fit for me." Zayn did not accept it immediately. "But I’d like to know if this character has any relationship scenes. I’m mainly referring to romantic scenes."
Currently, he couldn’t portray complex relationship scenes that he had not experienced, especially romantic scenes.
He also didn’t want to act in these kinds of scenes.
"Nope, there—there aren’t," Avery said as she waved. "I hate seeing the main character in detective dramas engaging in romantic conversations. This character is meant to be a protector who has an older brother’s caring nature."
Zayn immediately nodded. "No romantic scenes. Alright then. I’ll take the role."
Avery patted Zayn’s back and said happily, "Okay. I’ll definitely portray this character to be very manly and strong in the script so that both female and male viewers will love him."
At this point, she thought of something important. "You’ve been consistently using the scar removal ointment I gave you, right?"
Zayn had many scars on his body.
She felt that it was fine for him to play a soldier with these scars, but he could not just play soldiers. Moreover, as an actor, having too many scars on his body would affect his screen image. Besides, their elders and mother would be heartbroken when they saw these scars.
So, as soon as Zayn returned home, she gave him a few bottles of scar removal ointment, which were specially produced in the laboratory, and reminded him to apply it every day.
"I use it every day, and it really works." Zayn’s voice was gentle, and he sounded sincere. "Avery, thank you. You’ve done too much for me."
"We’re a family, so there’s no need for formalities." Avery then looked at him and asked, "You have shoots all the time—do you have any injuries or discomfort?"
Everyone in her family worked very hard.
But when it came to physical strain, fatigue, and danger, Zayn endured the most.
"Acting can be a bit more physically demanding, but that’s nothing. I’m used to it." Zayn shook his head. "It’s just that I have to drink a lot when we’re socializing. I really can’t handle it."
He had already tried his best to avoid socializing and drinking.
However, given his current situation, he was not in a position to avoid many social events.
"Avery thought for a moment. "Wait a second. I’ll give you some good stuff."
With that said, she ran away like a cat.
A few minutes later, she ran over like a gust of wind and placed a bottle of drug in front of Zayn.
"These are alcohol-dissolving pills. Just one tiny pill can neutralize the ethanol in two pounds of white wine. It can even neutralize some sedatives, anesthetics, and other ingredients. The best effect is achieved by putting the pill directly into the alcohol. You can also swallow it directly, but it will take longer to take effect. The downside is that this drug makes the alcohol taste very bitter—and can numb the tongue, reducing your sense of taste."
She thought, This way, no one would be able to plot against Zayn with alcohol or drugs.
Zayn smiled and said, "In that case, this drug can also help with weight loss."
Avery thought for a moment and said, "Technically, it can help with that, but I won’t recommend using it for weight loss because it will make you lose the pleasure of enjoying food."
Another reason she did not mention was that the development cost of this drug was very high, and the raw materials and production were extremely limited, so it should be taken sparingly whenever possible.
