The Return Of the Invincible Heiress -
Chapter 194
Chapter 194: Chapter 194
Avery stopped talking about Maggie’s case and asked one last question, "Do you hate Nicolas?"
She felt that Alexander would be filled with hatred.
After all, Alexander had never acknowledged Nicolas as his dad or father in front of Avery.
Alexander did not answer the question directly. Instead, he revealed a cold and slightly strange smile and said, "Everyone has to pay the price for their actions. He is no exception."
Then, Alexander gently put down Avery’s hand, poured a glass of milk for her, and changed the topic. He asked, "How have the past few days been for you since you returned?"
He did not ask Avery what she had been busy with for the past month. If Avery didn’t wish to speak about it, Alexander wouldn’t pry into it.
Avery tilted her head slightly and revealed a happy smile. She said, "I was being followed. The person following me is my brother, Brandon."
She briefly explained how she had reunited with Brandon but did not mention that Brandon had been bedridden and was currently working in food delivery service. She said that he needed time to sort out his feelings and wanted to travel for a few days before returning home.
When Alexander heard this, he began to think about how he could help move things along.
It was said that Brandon was the smartest, most ambitious, and success-hungry of the five Carter brothers, which made Alexander’s expectations of Brandon high.
Alexander tried to put himself in Avery’s shoes. He thought, What does she expect of him?
Of course, she would hope that Brandon would become famous overnight and lead the Carter family to new heights.
After having dinner with Avery, Alexander told Louis about Brandon and asked, "Do you know what to do?"
Louis was aware of the basic information about everyone in the Carter family. This included which school Brandon studied at in Aeloria, what his major was, the year he was in, and so on.
Louis answered in high spirits, "I do. I’ll find someone tonight."
The next afternoon, when Brandon was delivering coffee to an office building, he met his senior, who used to major in computer science at Rosemont University.
Brandon had a good relationship with this senior when they were in university. They were very happy to see each other, and the senior insisted on treating Brandon to coffee.
During their conversation, the senior said that he was a manager at an international company and was looking for talents like Brandon—a professional who was proficient in Maiselish and had studied abroad. The senior offered Brandon a job at his company as a senior technician with an annual salary of 200 thousand dollars.
If anyone else had received this job offer, they would definitely be very happy and would probably agree to it immediately.
However, the first thing that came to Brandon’s mind was something else.
He thought, Everyone else in the Carter family hit a jackpot in some aspect recently. Am I the next one with ridiculously good luck? Is Avery secretly helping me?
Brandon contemplated for a moment and shook his head. He declined the offer, saying, "Thank you for the generous offer. However, I’ve just returned to the country. Everything here has changed. I need time to adapt to my new environment. I don’t want to work a corporate job for the time being. My current delivery job allows me to come in contact with different people, so I can collect the data needed for running artificial intelligence."
The senior thought Brandon rejecting the offer was such a waste. He said, "I know how capable you are, so I will keep the position open for you."
After Brandon left, the senior called Louis.
Louis was quite surprised when he received news that Brandon had rejected the job offer. He then told Mr. Moran.
Louis reported, "Brandon would rather deliver food than go back to the Carter family and accept a high-paying job. I think something else is going on. In addition, I keep feeling that his return to Rosemont City now is odd."
He then asked, "Do you want me to investigate what he experienced in Aeloria and what he’s up to now?"
Alexander contemplated for a few seconds before shaking his head and said, "Miss Carter must have figured this out as well. I think she must have some plans for Brandon. We shouldn’t investigate Brandon and interfere with Miss Carter’s plan."
Louis nodded and gave Alexander a thumbs-up. He praised, "You’re so thoughtful."
Alexander glanced at him coldly and said, "Although it’s inappropriate for us to investigate Brandon, he needs to slowly make a name for himself. He must have achieved something by the end of this year. I don’t have time to wait."
He analyzed, "Someone like him definitely prefers starting a business over working for others. He probably doesn’t want to rely on his family’s money to start a business. So, he needs investors and partners."
Alexander asked, "Do you know what to do?"
Behind his lenses, Louis’s eyes shone with admiration and enthusiasm.
He interlocked his fingers and placed them on his chest. He praised generously, "Mr. Moran, you’re amazing. I love you!"
Alexander’s mouth twitched. He commanded, "Get lost!"
In the evening, Brandon returned to the old residence, cold and fatigued.
The moment he opened the door, the lights in the room suddenly lit up. He was stunned when he saw Avery sitting by the coffee table.
Avery smiled and waved at him. She greeted, "Brandon, you’re back. I brought Mom’s food over. It’s still hot. Let’s eat together."
Brandon’s heart felt warm. He asked, "Why are you here? It’s so cold. How long have you been waiting?"
There was someone waiting for him at home when he returned at night. This felt so good.
Throughout his time abroad, Brandon had imagined this scene countless times.
Now, he finally got to experience it.
Avery said, "I’ve been here for around 10 minutes. I drove here. It’s not cold at all."
She shrugged and continued, "Everyone in the family is eating out tonight at a restaurant. I can’t leave you alone here eating takeout or leftovers while everyone is feasting, right?"
Brandon did not respond to her question. His eyes were slightly red. He said, "Avery, thank you."
Avery beamed and replied, "I don’t have it as hard as you."
She paused for a moment before adding, "If Mom finds out that you aren’t even eating well when you’re so close to home, she’ll definitely be sad. So, before you return home, I’ll send food over every night."
Regardless of how independent Brandon was, Avery was determined to have dinner with him. She could not bear the thought of Brandon eating leftovers alone at night.
Brandon did not stand on ceremony. He sat down and ate heartily, gulping down large mouthfuls of soup.
The food was especially fragrant and satisfying to him.
After eating, the two of them started talking about artificial intelligence.
Avery’s proficiency and insight into artificial intelligence once again amazed Brandon.
Brandon wanted to ask Avery if she had looked for people to help him behind his back, but when he saw Avery’s pure and sincere smile, he decided not to ask.
Avery kept her word. Every evening, she would go to a restaurant to get takeout and send it to Viento Court. She would then eat together with Brandon.
Brandon’s physical and mental state visibly improved.
Christmas was approaching.
Zayn finally finished filming after nearly two months. Carrying his backpack and dressed like a traveler, he got off the plane.
Just as he was about to walk out of the airport, a woman’s voice suddenly called him from behind.
"Zayn? You’re Zayn Carter, right?"
Her voice sounded unfamiliar to Zayn.
He subconsciously wanted to turn around to see who was calling him. When his gaze swept across the mirror in front of him, he froze and stared at the reflection.
He could see his reflection and the reflections of the people behind him— including the woman in high heels, dragging her suitcase.
The woman’s face was familiar to Zayn.
However, he never wanted to see her again in his life.
He continued walking and strode away.
The woman cried out, "Zayn, wait!"
She quickened her pace to catch up but lost her balance and fell to the ground.
Everyone around her turned to look.
A few men ran over to help her up.
However, her eyes were locked onto Zayn.
She kept calling out, "Zayn, it’s me, Elsie Morin."
